CNOs job entails reaching out to staff members, communicating on a daily basis with all departments. CNOs can have a dynamic and positive effect on the hospitals progress, if given the chance to be equals in the board room. Chief Nursing officers are referred to as the backbone and a force to be reckoned with in some institution. However the number of institute that recognize the importance of CNOs are narrowing. The role of, Chief Nursing Officer have become more limited in decision making & abilities within their respective organizations (Institute of Medicine, 2010). These challenges that the CNO’s continue to encounter has a negative impact on the focus of the CNO’s leadership, a survey conducted by the American Organization of Nurse Executive (AONE), revealed that 70% of the Chief Executive Officers (CEO), board members, and physicians have undermined nurses to the extent that CNO are losing ground and are reporting to the Chief Executive Officers for guidance and more responsibilities., and this has created a negative domino effect, which also negatively impacts finance, staffing, and the delivery of quality patient care. These changes attempt to phase out the CNO’s role, and in most hospitals, the CNO position has been taken for granted, to the extent of them being diminished. These findings as noted by a two-year consecutive study that found a significant decrease in the presence of CNO’s on the board of directors for the years 2002 to 2007 (Governance Institute, 2007). In addition, as nurses continually get underrepresented, their responsibilities increase, and this takes away from the day to day administrative duties that include nursing and ancillary staffing shortages, nurse retention issues. These potential changes and challenges continues to impact the quality of care Running head: CHIEF NURSING OFFICER 3 provided to the patients served, and because of all these changes, hospitals are forced to incur some of the cost associated with this burden. According to Batcheller (2010), CNOs are facing adversity from Chief Executive Officers and other board members, these adversities are noted when engaged in board meetings leading to disagreement, conflicting work ethics, and poor policies to run the hospital efficiently. Assignment: Challenges facing Chief Nursing Officers This presents a challenge to the health care industry by not having the input of CNOs in their organization The Chief Nursing Officer’s lack of presence on governing boards, can compromises the quality of service delivered to patients. In recent years, it has been acknowledged that the Center of Medicare noticed the worsening health care that were preventable error experienced by patient. Therefore, changes to the payment structures have been addressed based on patient’s outcome and satisfaction (Institute of Medicine). The quality of care is imperative in general across the United States of America, as health care reform continues to be an enormous debated topic. CNO’s role in the health care can be a significant enhancement to health reform. Based on their influences and their involvement in their organization, emphasizing the quality of care delivered. According to a 2006 survey conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ), the CEO’s recognized the importance of having a quality committee with nursing expertise adopting oversight practices, reducing mortality rates. A few hospitals recognize the importance of having the influence of CNOs as part of their hierarchy. Weiss and Pettker stated, “that our CNO’s active participation on our hospital’s governing board has been, and continues to be, integral to the formulation of well-targeted and achievable goals that elevate our entire organization’s quest for excellence” (2015, p.14). The role of CNOs’ in organization represents stability and balance to the management of the hospital, Running head: CHIEF NURSING OFFICER 4 CNOs are responsible for various tasks, including operations, strategies, care delivery, mentoring and workforce management (Batcheller, 2010). The impacts of not having, the CNOs contribution in any health organization can make a difference in the operation, strategic planning process, and deliverance of care to their patients. It would be shortsighted to engage in a process without the active participation of senior nursing leaders at the board level (Weiss and Pettker, 2015). The CEO, board members and physician of various health departments, can benefit from allowing CNOs participation to provide great quality health care. CNOs are the root to providing positive effects. Furthermore, there must be a collaborative effort from the nursing hierarchy to encourage nurses, facilitate events to train nurses to becoming strong CNO’s. These considerate efforts within in the health organization can improve the role of CNO and board members. Running head: CHIEF NURSING OFFICER 5 References Batcheller J. (2010).
