Assignment: Nursing Question attachment_1 attachment_2 Health-care Associated Infections Lauren McGreal Dr. Furco/ Professor Donohoe Nurse 250 Department of Nursing, Morrisville State College April 11th, 2021 Abstract Many patients in the hospital receiving invasive treatments such as surgery or other medical procedures are at risk for obtaining Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs). Common types of HAI’s include catheter-associated urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, blood stream infections, pneumonia and clostridium difficile. While these infections are caused by procedures that patients are receiving to aim for higher quality of life, they can put patients at risk, be detrimental to the healing process to all life stages and be easily prevented at the same time. According to the CDC, “…1 in every 25 U.S. hospital patients is diagnosed with at least one infection related to hospital care alone…” during the year. Determining what can be used as primary, secondary and tertiary prevention methods can have a great impact on reducing the chances of putting patients at risk. As a nurse there’s a huge role in preventing HAI’s. Part of the nurse’s role can include proper patient teaching, delegation, communication and advocacy.
