Format and Style Format refers to the norms about the way something is arranged, presented, or how it works. For example, music can come in different formats including a record, a CD, a downloadable file, streaming, etc. Style is the way in which something is written, as opposed to the meaning of what is written. Consider the length of the text, how formal or casual your writing will be, what vocabulary youll use or avoid (including words a Sociologist might use and/or popular or slang terms), whether youll write in a personal way that includes your own thoughts and feelings, or whether youll be objective (objective can be a problematic idea because all knowledge comes from somewhere. However, you might try to make your writing more universal meaning that you might choose a style that you think speaks to many people about what we have in common. Hint: its not just white men who get to define what we have in common) What format and style will you choose? How will you explain or express your topic, and achieve your purpose using this style? Why is this format and style the one youve chosen for your audience?
