Written Activity #3: Busting Myths & The War on ScienceThis week is we will begin to acquire specific tools to bring anthropological perspectives to the public arena.  You will read Part I “Myth Busting Tools” of Agustin Fuentes’ (2011) book in order to give us a method for Public Anthropology.  We will be specifically focused on the “War on Science” this week, and thoughts on how to combat it.Objective: To think about the holistic approach using science, emergent controversies, and belief as a springboard; examine the specific tools of bringing anthropological perspectives and methods outside of the academyOutcome: Discussing – and writing about – the ethics, benefits, and pitfalls of bringing an anthropological approach to wider publics and controversial debates.Readings:First, read the following: 1. Sidky (2018) The War on Science ActionsThen, Part I “Myth Busting Tools” (p. 1-64) from Fuentes (2012). In one post of appx. 750+ words, answer the following questions based upon and THIS WEEK’S readings:1. What is a ‘myth’ that you would like to ‘bust’ in/for American or Global society? Be specific about the myth and its implications, and provide a source that exemplifies your ‘myth’ (eg. news source, website, academic article, book, etc).2. How would you begin to use Fuentes’ “tools” to make a plan to”bust” the myth?  Be specific, and be sure to include an analysis of the reading.3. Do you think that Slakey’s work is directly relevant to today’s world?  If so, how and why?4. Does Fuentes accomplish what Sidkey (2018) asks? If so, be specific in your explanation.  Or is Fuentes complicit somehow in the “war on science”?The standard Activities Rubric will be used to grade this exercise.1. Anthropological Perspectives (4) Exhibits awareness and understanding of ethnocentrism, cultural relativity, contexts, and power in all activities;2. Writing, Style, Organization (4)  Writing is always important.  The writing can be indicative of your effort (see #4 above).
