Activity 3: Written Assignment—Personal Reflections Context We can observe the marginalization of people who are considered “other” in society. We may have personal experience of marginalization as well. The areas of personal identity such as race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation may be contexts for personal or group marginalization. Description Think about your own social identity. Consider each group with whom you consider yourself affiliated. Some of the possible identities may include race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religious affiliation, ability, profession, country of origin, first language, family status (marital status and/or ability to marry partner, children/no child and/or ability to have children), or other groups not listed. Once you create your “social identity list,” consider the following questions: What do I do on a day-to-day basis that might contribute to inequality? What have I learned about how to perceive or how to relate to members of my own group or other groups, and what is the source of that learning? What do I know about how to relate to and interpret the behavior of others who occupy social locations (e.g., class, gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, religion) that are similar to, as well as different from, my own? What have I learned about how to interpret the behavior of people whose race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, or religion is different from my own? What if I add class and gender/sex to the equation? What do I know about my conscious intentions when I interact with a person who is African American, Latino/Latina, Native American, Asian American, biracial or multiracial, or European American; refugees and other immigrants; people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or intersex; and people with disabilities? Why do the consequences or outcomes of my actions not fit with or match my good intentions? Delivery Consider the above questions and write a three–page personal reflection on the topic of marginalization. Post your refection to the Assignments/Dropbox as instructed by your facilitator.
