Allegory of the Cave
1) Compare the accounts of enlightenment in Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” and Dave Eggers’ short story “After I Was Thrown in the River and Before I drowned.” In the allegory, Plato seems to describe enlightenment as transcendence (leaving the cave and attaining a higher level of knowledge), and while something similar happens at the end of Eggers’ story (Steven dies and transcends to an afterlife and a higher level of knowledge or awareness), Steven seems a little underwhelmed by it all, no longer running and even saying he misses his old life. Does Eggers offer a different account of enlightenment through Steven’s experiences of racing and “floating” over the drainpipe? Is this and Steven’s underwhelmed experience of the afterlife a critique of Plato’s version of enlightenment? Why or why not? I fixed the citation error in quotes just needs to sound like the essay you wrote for me. What to fix: A bit rough for a final draft of a college paper. It was full of sentence level errors that could have easily been cleaned up if you had proofread properly. Here are four things to address if you choose to do the rewrite: 1) paper needs a better title- avoid the “versus” title. This isn’t a wrestling match. Also, you misspelled Eggers’ name many times in the paper. You want to get this right; it’s about credibility. Also, you need to proofread the paper much more carefully. There are a lot of sloppy sentence level errors 2) your intro needs to be revised- it is full of sentence level errors and missing punctuation. Also, you need to go into a little more depth on what each text says about enlightenment. Finally, your thesis is incomplete. Why are Steven’s experiences a critique of Plato? Give a reason. 3) there were no citations in this paper- a huge oversight, and it technically renders the paper plagiarized- fix this 4) you should start your argument with Plato’s version of enlightenment so the reader knows what Eggers is critiquing. 73/100
