This also serves as the Portfolio Assignment for this course. Project Deliverables This Team Project is divided into three primary parts, a Portfolio that synthesizes the parts, and a Team Member Evaluation. The parts of this project are: Part 1: Project Charter and Team Plan for Collaboration Part 2: Define the Breakdown Structure (WBS) Part 3: Sequence and Schedule Project Activities and Resources Portfolio: Team Project Closeout Team Member Evaluation Form Due Week 5 Due Week 7 Due Week 9 Due Week 11 Due Week 11 Each part of the project is described below and in the Assignment areas of the course. Team Discussion Areas When you are assigned to your team, you will automatically have access to a Team Discussion area (where you may discuss, share, and work on this project). Assignment 1: Team Project Part 2: Define the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Because online discussion areas can become lengthy and difficult to navigate, your Team Discussion area will be divided into separate discussion topic areas for each part of this project. Because communications in all classroom discussions are asynchronous, team members will be able to log in and post project contributions according to individual time zones. You are encouraged to work on your project in the areas that have been created especially for your team rather than working via telephone or other methods that can limit or even exclude the feedback of those who need to be involved. Other teams in this course will not be able to access your Team Discussion areas; however, your Instructor will be able to observe your work and check your progress. Reminder: Your Instructor can only track team member participation in the Team Discussion areas. Please try to do most of your collaborative work in the Team Discussion areas. However, online chat, e-mails, conference calls, and other methods are permitted. Project Timeline Summary Week 4: Assignment: Team Project Part 1: Project Charter and Team Plan for Collaboration © 2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 1 Team Discussion areas will be available to you by the end of Day 3 of Week 4. Check in with your teammates and introduce yourselves no later than this date. After you introduce yourselves, begin working on your plan for collaboration. Reminder: Your Instructor can only track team member participation in the Team Discussion areas. Please try to do most of your collaborative work in the Team Discussion areas. However, online chat, e-mails, conference calls, and other methods are permitted. Team Discussion Guidelines Work with your team members to create and submit a Project Charter and Team Plan for Collaboration based on the Team Project Scenario. Not all elements of the Team Project Scenario are provided and may need to be supplemented by the creativity of you and your project team. Be sure to validate any modifications you make in the scenario with evidence. Participate with your team in the Team Discussion area to address the following question: ? What do you need to know about this project in order to create a project charter? Project Charter Work with your team to create a project charter that includes the following: ? Mission of the project ? Problem statement ? Project objectives ? Scope of the project ? Milestones within the project ? Deliverables—a defined product produced as part of the project ? Assumptions ? List of key stakeholders ? Project risks ? List of team members, roles, and a plan for collaboration Much of the information for the project charter can be extrapolated from the Team Project Scenario. As the project moves forward, additional hypothetical situations for the project can be developed by your team. Team Plan for Collaboration Working as a team, create and submit your team’s plan for collaboration. In this part of your project, you should identify and describe the general guidelines and plan you will follow to work successfully online and optimize your collective skills. Address the following: © 2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 2 1. Team identification: A listing of all team members. 2. Team vision: A brief statement that embodies your team’s ideal in completing this project and targets all you want to accomplish together. 3. Processes and expectations for communication: The most effective means of working together from a distance are asynchronous modes that allow team members to express thoughts and share ideas according to their own schedules. You also need to consider the best ways to share any documents or information you may gather from speaking directly to an expert in a field or from a source that is only available to you in hard copy. Assignment 1: Team Project Part 2: Define the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) 4. Determination of roles and division of work for the project: Typical roles include an organizer, who makes sure that everyone stays on track; editors, who take the agreedupon final contributions of team members and fit them into the team-project deliverable; and a presenter, who uploads the assembled version of the project into the document sharing area and writes a summary introduction. These suggested roles are guidelines. For the purposes of this project, you may discover that different or additional roles that fit the project scenario are most effective. Each team member could be assigned a position title and credentials that match their role in the project scenario. Keep in mind that the team roles may change as requirements change. None of the roles you decide on takes the place of participation when it comes to the content of the project. All team members should contribute to the project content and discussions. 5. Approaches to conflict and agreement: This item should address the way you would like to see conflicts resolved and determine agreed-upon guidelines or processes you will follow to resolve them. Consider a worst-case scenario and agree to specific actions the team will take should this scenario occur. Include a description of potential negative consequences that may result from the actions. 6. Expectations for participation: One of the biggest objections to working with an online team is the fear that some members will not participate or that one or two members will be burdened with the majority of the work. In this section, determine and agree upon expectations for participation and the measures you will take when someone is not participating as fully as you expect, or when someone seems to be doing too much, such as taking over all of the discussions. Have a plan for taking on a team member’s work, should the need arise to do so. Keep in mind the need for organizing the project charter on paper before you use project management software, such as Microsoft Project. To prepare: ? ? ? Review Week 4’s Learning Resources on project charters. Thoroughly examine the project requirements above. Using the Team Discussion area, engage in discussion with your team members on how you will collaborate, distribute work, and submit the Assignment. To complete Part 1 of your Team Project: © 2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 3 ? Write a 3- to 4-page document that includes a project charter and a team plan for collaboration, following the guidelines provided above. This Assignment is due on or before Day 7 of Week 5. Designate one team member to submit this Assignment for your team. Week 6: Assignment: Team Project Part 2: Define the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) In Part 2 of your Team Project, your team will develop a work breakdown structure (WBS) that must be accomplished in order to complete the Casino Medical Center project. Use the Team Project Scenario document in Week 6’s Learning Resources to help define your deliverables. Begin by deciding, with your team, the approach to developing a work breakdown structure you wish to use. This approach will guide your process and the final design of the WBS. Your team will identify project deliverables that need to be accomplished to achieve the project’s goals. For each deliverable, relevant subtasks or activities must be identified (the work that needs to be done).Assignment 1: Team Project Part 2: Define the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Using these activities, you create a work breakdown structure, or WBS. This work breakdown structure (WBS) will be the basis for creating a project plan and schedule in Microsoft Project. You and your team are not expected to know all of the deliverables and sub-activities that need to occur, but you should be able to use your combined experience, knowledge, and research to identify many of the necessary deliverables and supporting activities. Be sure to utilize course resources, as these resources should provide information on what to include in this part of the Team Project. As you and your team address the discussion question below, you will be able to write and submit a 2- to 3-page team paper that summarizes the group’s work and that includes WBS diagrams of at least five high-level deliverables. Deliverables to consider in defining the activities and tasks for the hypothetical project are included here, but keep in mind that none of the items shown on this list are expected or required. Your team will identify the unique deliverables for your project. Use specific names for the deliverables that reflect the project’s purpose. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Project charter Project team formation Project plan Communication Project meetings Software creation Hardware acquisition Test plan Implementation plan Implementation Evaluation © 2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 4 Team Discussion Guidelines Through discussion and collaboration, you and your team members will develop a hypothetical work breakdown structure (WBS) around which you will later create a schedule in Microsoft Project. Consider the following question as you discuss the work breakdown structure with your team: ? What needs to be done in order to complete this project, and why? Working as a team, consider all the phases of this project and the deliverables in each phase. In the course of your discussion, challenge each other to be as thorough as possible in defining project deliverables that, taken together, provide information for your project plan. Later, in Part 3, these deliverables will be further broken down and sequenced into tasks. To prepare: ? ? ? Review Week 6’s Learning Resources on work breakdown structures. Thoroughly examine the above requirements. Engage in discussion with your team members on how you will collaborate, distribute work, and submit Assignments. To complete Part 2 of your Team Project: ? Collaborate on a 2- to 3-page paper that summarizes the group’s work and includes a WBS diagram of at least five high-level deliverables and a list of relevant tasks and subtasks. Follow the guidelines provided above. This portion of your Team Project is due on or before Day 7 of Week 7. Designate one team member to submit this Assignment for your team. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from your sources of evidence. Refer to the APA Publication Manual to ensure your citations in the text and reference list are correct. Place your reference list at the end of this section. Follow all APA format standards. Week 8: Assignment: Team Project Part 3: Sequence and Schedule Project Activities Project In Part 2 of your Team Project, your team identified project deliverables and related activities for the Casino Medical Center project. In Part 3, your team will identify tasks for each deliverable’s activities and generate a schedule of activities and resources in Microsoft Project. Working together, you will assign durations for each task and establish relationships and dependencies between the tasks or activities. Assignment 1: Team Project Part 2: Define the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Once you have sequenced the deliverables and identified subtasks, each team member must enter a part of the information into a Microsoft Project plan. Once each of you has gained experience scheduling the activities in Microsoft Project, your team will determine the resources for the project activities. © 2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 5 To ensure necessary time for collaboration, Part 3 of your Team Project is broken into two sections: ? In the first section (Week 8: Assignment: Team Project Part 3), you create your own version of a Microsoft Project plan that corresponds to your Team Project thus far. Each team member should share their project plan with their team through Doc Sharing on or before Day 1 of Week 9. ? In the second section (Week 9: Assignment: Team Project: Part 3 (continued)), the Team reviews the project plans created in the previous week and selects one as the basis for moving forward. Each team member then selects an activity or activities and determines the resources required to complete that project activity. In addition, each team member submits a 1- to 2-page paper that examines the successes and failures experienced in creating the project plan and describes what they would do differently. This Assignment is due on or before Day 7 of Week 9. Team Discussion Guidelines Through discussion, challenge each other to think creatively as you identify areas that might inform a successful project plan for the provided scenario. Offer ideas from your own professional experiences. As you develop your plan, consider the format by which you will communicate the plan to the other teams. Complete the first three steps of the following sequence on paper and in your Team Discussion area before you work in Microsoft Project. Ultimately, doing the steps on paper will save time. 1. Sequence the project deliverables; identify activities and tasks. Note: Don’t get lost in details. Don’t identify every task and subtask. Break the activities down no more than three levels (unless your team is truly driven to do more). Your goal is to identify major tasks in the sequence in which they will be performed. 2. Assign durations for each task. 3. Establish relationships and dependencies between the tasks. 4. Use Microsoft Project to enter data and create the schedule. Each team member must create a schedule, using Microsoft Project. Be sure to refer to tutorials and other resources if you need help with using Microsoft Project. The Project Management Quick Reference Guide for Project 2010 (located in the Week 3 Learning Resources) can be extremely useful, even if you are an experienced Microsoft Project user. This guide aligns the project management process with the steps to complete each phase of the project. To prepare: ? ? ? Review Week 8’s Learning Resources on scheduling activities and resources in Microsoft Project. Thoroughly examine the requirements above. Engage in discussion with your team members on how you will collaborate, distribute work, and submit the Assignment. © 2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 6 To complete this portion of Part 3 of the Team Project: ? Upload your individual Microsoft Project plan to Doc Sharing on or before Day 1 of Week 9 so that your team may have sufficient time to review your project and collaborate on the rest of Part 3 in Week 9. Upload your version of the Microsoft Project plan to your team area in Doc Sharing and click on share with the entire class. Upload this document on or before Day 1 of Week 9 so that your team will be able to review your project plan before continuing with the rest of Part 3 of the Team Project. The entire team will review all the plans and choose one of the versions as the plan to use during the remainder of Part 3 of the Team Project, which you begin and complete in Week 9.
