CNOs job entails reaching out to staff members, communicating on a daily basis with all departments. CNOs can have a dynamic and positive effect on the hospitals progress, if given the chance to be equals in the board room. Chief Nursing officers are referred to as the backbone and a force to be reckoned with in some institution. However the number of institute that recognize the importance of CNOs are narrowing. The role of, Chief Nursing Officer have become more limited in decision making & abilities within their respective organizations (Institute of Medicine, 2010). These challenges that the CNOs continue to encounter has a negative impact on the focus of the CNOs leadership, a survey conducted by the American Organization of Nurse Executive (AONE), revealed that 70% of the Chief Executive Officers (CEO), board members, and physicians have undermined nurses to the extent that CNO are losing ground and are reporting to the Chief Executive Officers for guidance and more responsibilities., and this has created a negative domino effect, which also negatively impacts finance, staffing, and the delivery of quality patient care. These changes attempt to phase out the CNOs role, and in most hospitals, the CNO position has been taken for granted, to the extent of them being diminished. These findings as noted by a two-year consecutive study that found a significant decrease in the presence of CNOs on the board of directors for the years 2002 to 2007 (Governance Institute, 2007). According to a 2006 survey conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Qualitys (AHRQ), the CEOs recognized the importance of having a quality committee with nursing expertise adopting oversight practices, reducing mortality rates. A few hospitals recognize the importance of having the influence of CNOs as part of their hierarchy. Weiss and Pettker stated, that our CNOs active participation on our hospitals governing board has been, and continues to be, integral to the formulation of well-targeted and achievable goals that elevate our entire organizations quest for excellence (2015, p.14). The impacts of not having, the CNOs contribution in any health organization can make a difference in the operation, strategic planning process, and deliverance of care to their patients. It would be shortsighted to engage in a process without the active participation of senior nursing leaders at the board level (Weiss and Pettker, 2015). The CEO, board members and physician of various health departments, can benefit from allowing CNOs participation to provide great quality health care. CNOs are the root to providing positive effects.
