Assignment: Cultural Development of the Japanese and the Jewish Heritage attachment_1 attachment_2 Dilsy Ricardo Florida National University Nursing Department BSN Program NUR 4636 02/07/2019 Prof. Cassandre Milien, RN MSN People of Japanese and Jewish Heritage Q1: Cultural Development of the Japanese and the Jewish Heritage The development of heritage among the Japanese and Jewish people in the United States is different. These races have first to third generation immigrants that have shaped their cultural practices and heritage in the country. The Japanese American culture is distinct and borrows most of the cultural traditions from its country of origin. For instance, Japanese in the U.S. value education with a near zero rate in illiteracy. Secondly, the Issei or first-generation Japanese immigrants have a wide variety of English language abilities in the United States. However, Nisei (second generation immigrants) and sansei (third generation) have been educated by the American system of education. Students complete a mandatory six-year English language course in Japan; making it possible for them to understand, speak, write, and read English (Purnell, 2013). Thirdly, as a closely-knit and as high context culture, communication is not exact and precise and much of it is based on established values and accepted gestures as well as body language. Therefore, traditional Japanese show a significant control on their body language. Assignment: Cultural Development of the Japanese and the Jewish Heritage Further, Japanese value punctuality and use of family names with well-defined roles for different members of the family. As such, family roles and organization are based on the cultural traditions that are kept alive even in the United States. Common health issues include cardiac and renal condition as well as stomach cancer and asthma alongside other traditionally known diseases like Oguchi disease. Smoking is common among Japanese irrespective of one’s gender. Japanese observe traditional spiritual orientation and Shinto, or the indigenous religion is the most common with less than 1% being Christians. Rituals and festivals define the observance of spiritual life. Further, Japanese have strict pregnancy, birth, and death rituals Japanese use traditional medicines and depend on Shinto religion for purging and purification. As such, Japanese value their traditional medicines and therapies even in the United States. Addiction and mental illness are a taboo in this community. The Jewish cultural heritage in the United States is founded on the Jewish traditions as a culture and religion and not a race. As such, Jewish practice their religion based on different aspects that include liberal reform to strict orthodox (Purnell, 2013). Liberal Jewish culture is open to new changes based on the changing healthcare landscape while Orthodox Jewish culture is strict and follows the biblical interpretation of all laws in relation to different aspects of life. There are over 6 million Jews in the United States who migrated mainly from Europe, especially Eastern Europe to avoid religious persecution. The Jews in the United States are grouped into three different groups that include the Ashkenazi from Eastern, Sephardic from Western Europe, Sabra, those born in Israel and Falasha or black Jews from Ethiopia. Historical evident shows that Jews place high emphasis on social justice and education with a majority of this population being well educated as demonstrated by the higher percentage in successful professional callings. They use English as a common language alongside other Hebrew dialects based on their origin of migration to the United States. Communication is highly close in the Jewish culture with well established body space when people from different social settings meet. Family roles and organization is based on the traditions of the culture and not due to civilizing influences (Truong, Paradise & Priest, 2014). Observance of the Ten Commandment is a critical component of religious and spirituality commitment and children attend Hebrew schools. Liberal and Orthodox Jewish practices define the cultural heritage of this community which informs the kind of decisions that one takes on a host of issues like bio-cultural ecology and pregnancy and child-bearing practices. These stands also affect perception on healthcare practices with both views affecting several aspects of Jewish culture in healthcare. Assignment: Cultural Development of the Japanese and the Jewish Heritage Q2: Cultural Beliefs related to Healthcare and their effects on delivery of evidence-based healthcare Cultural beliefs are a fundamental part of delivering evidence-based healthcare in the United States, especially at a time when reforms are taking place in the sector. In their study, Al-Bannay et al. (2014) observe that cultural factor affects healthcare promotion outcomes in communities; either knowingly or unknowingly. Further, the development of evidence-based care implies that healthcare providers and practitioners must have cultural competence to enhance healthcare outcomes and improve access to care in every community. As such, cultural beliefs can hinder the delivery of quality and patient-based care. As observed, the Japanese and Jewish cultural beliefs related to healthcare may influence the delivery of evidence-based care positively or negatively. Among the Japanese, pregnancy termination is common when the health of a fetus is in doubt. Further, medically compromised neonates are exposed to aggressive treatment even in situations where prognoses are not good. Japanese emphasize the dependence on traditional therapies and the concept of Ki and traditional forms of massage like the shiatsu are emphasized (Al-Bannay et al., 2014). Again, addiction and mental illness are a taboo among the Japanese and people with disabilities are shamed and stigmatized in society. Imperatively, these traditional beliefs compromise the delivery of evidence-based healthcare because they consider other medical conditions as taboo subjects that cannot be discussed (Truong et al., 2014). Additionally, termination of pregnancy should be done based in healthcare opinion but not traditions while offering aggressive treatment to neonates does not entail use of evidence-based care delivery. The orthodox Jewish healthcare practices compromise the delivery of evidence-based care in the Jewish population. The Jewish orthodox culture does not permit artificial insemination and contraception. In addition, orthodox Jews do not permit sterilization whereas liberal Judaism allows these practices. Both liberal and conservative Jews on a host of healthcare practices in relation to transplants, discrimination against people with healthcare conditions like mental, physical and development challenges. As such, a majority of the cultural practices among the Jews do not obstruct the use of evidence-based healthcare delivery.Assignment: Cultural Development of the Japanese and the Jewish Heritage References Al-Bannay, H., Jarus, T., Jongbloed, L., Yazigi, M., & Dean, E.
