Assignment: Electronic Addiction attachment_1 attachment_2 Chance Peterson February 18, 2016 LIB-342 Final Project Part 1: Introduction Computer and Internet Addiction Types of computer addiction There are numerous varied forms of computer addiction with different method or type of excessive computer. For instance, there are people who stay on the computer but do not go online but rather spend time tinkering with computers or reprogramming- though this can be deemed to be constructive form of computer addiction distinctive from cybersex addiction or internet addiction. This client is suffering from internet addiction. Specifically, the patient is suffering from social media networking addictions. This implies that the client dedicates a larger proportion of his time towards socializing online on social sites such as Facebook, tweeter, Instagram among other social sites, compared to socializing with real life people. So far, tech gurus and psychologists have not been able to determine the parameters that indicate the excessive use of a computer. Case in point, a person spending eight hours a day on a computer may not be suffering from computer addiction whereas a two-hour computer user may be a computer addict. The reason behind this amazing fact is the fact that the number of hours or days spent on a computer is not indicative of computer addiction but rather by ways in which computer use affects a user’s other aspects of their daily lives. Causes of computer addiction Anxiety emanating from work-related stress, financial problems, relationships, among others. Depression is another cause which employs one to use internet to distance them from reality. In addition, physical inactivity prompts one to prefer sticking to a computer rather than stepping out. And lastly, boredom and a feeling of idleness cause addiction. How one gets addicted to a computer The most common cause of computer addiction is the need to cover up emotions or escape reality. To many people, especially introverts, they deem socializing easier by doing it behind closed doors in an online fantasy world. For compulsive shoppers and excessive gamblers, they believe that their habits would be unnoticeable while undertaken inline rather than physically. Individuals who are shy, lonely, easily bored, suffering from impulse control disorder or another addiction are the most vulnerable to this condition. Continuous use of computer as the main stress reliever as opposed to engaging in other outdoor activities such as sporting, fishing, and dancing to deal with negative feelings and events also causes computer addiction. Other causes may include distraction from being upset, procrastination from boring responsibilities, and attempts to meet belongingness and companionship needs. The client observed these symptoms of computer addiction and sought professional help: Isolation. The client confirmed that he spent more time browsing on the computer compared to the amount of time he spends having fun and socializing with friends and family by undertaking outdoor activities such as picnics, fishing, and sports. Defensive. The client confessed to being defensive to others especially when questioned about his computer activities. He also has feelings of needing to justify his activities on the computer and the amount of time he spends. Distracted. The client confirmed being easily distracted by the computer. Time and again he finds it challenging to focus on his responsibilities and accomplish his assigned tasks at home and at work since his mind becomes preoccupied with a desire to always get into the computer. Late. The client also sometimes attends family events late, reaches the office past reporting time, and arrives home late due to allocating excessive time on the computer. To numerous computer enthusiasts and users, the idea of getting addicted to a computer is a foreign phenomenon which most of them would just brush away terming it as a joke. However, this condition is very real and gaining prominence especially in this technological age with the dynamic and evolving technological innovations such as social media applications. The effects of computer and internet addiction are very intense and can even result to a number of long term consequences at home, in work, and social life. There are various effects related to compulsive computer use: One effect is inability to socially interact and socialize physically but only online on social networking sites and chat groups. There is also inability to enjoy doing any task that does not involve the use of computers and lack of relief or gratification in undertaking such tasks. Another is excessive spending on software, hardware, or other techno gadgets. The client also ends up breaking ties with friends and relatives due to spending more time on computers as opposed to a friend or close relative. Furthermore, he experiences low job productivity leading to loss of job as time is spent on other gratifying tasks on computer. There is also the effect of losing focus on career goals due to more time spent on the computer. Moreover, the client has poor completion rate of school assignments. Feelings of failure also engulf the client due to the inability to control the vice. The client also battles with low self-esteem resulting from the feeling of being socially inept. Lastly, the client has poor self hygiene due to excessive computer involvement and thus minimal grooming time. Physical effects The client experiences strained vision or dry eyes. Another effect is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (numbness, pain and hands burning that may rise up the wrists, elbow, and shoulders). Furthermore, he experiences severe headaches, back and necks aches, and sleep disturbances. Progression of use of internet addiction The client confirmed that he had experienced feelings of guilt, hopelessness, anxiety and depression and therefore resulted to short sessions of internet browsing in order to relieve a dysphonic mood and escape from his problems. Within no time, the client had increased the duration he had allocated to internet browsing to achieve satisfaction. Without noticing, the client was staying on-line than originally intended. The client then developed preoccupation with the internet such that thoughts about previous on-line activity or looking forward to the next on-line session clouded his mind. He tried repeatedly to cut back, control, or stop internet use but his efforts were in vain. The client experienced feelings of moodiness, restlessness, irritability, or depression when he attempted to minimize on internet use. This addiction risked or jeopardized his job, significant relationships, educational, as well as career opportunities. Eventually, the client started lying to therapists, family members, or any other interested parties in order to conceal the extent to which he was deeply involved with the internet.
