Fact 1: Each geese flaps its wings, creating a “uplift” for the birds behind it.
The complete flock gains 71 percent more range by flying in a “V” shape than if each bird flew alone.
Lesson: Because they are moving on the thrust of one another, people who have a common sense of direction and community can arrive where they are going faster and easier.
Fact 2: When a goose breaks away from its flock, it experiences the drag and difficulty of flying alone.
It quickly returns to formation in order to take advantage of the lifting force of the bird just ahead of it.
Lesson: If we have as much sense as a geese, we will stay in formation with others who are heading in the direction we desire.
We are willing to accept their assistance and to assist others.
Fact 3: When the lead goose tired, the formation rotates back into place, and another goose flies to the point position.
Lesson: Just like geese, individuals are interdependent on each other’s expertise, capacities, and unique arrangement of gifts, talents, or resources. It pays to take turns completing the difficult jobs and sharing leadership.
Fact 4: The geese in formation honk to encourage those in the lead to keep going.
Lesson: We must ensure that our honking is motivating.
The productivity of groups when there is encouragement is significantly higher.
The attribute of honking we desire is the power of encouragement (standing by one’s heart or core values while encouraging the heart and core of others).
Fact 5: When a goose becomes ill, injured, or shot down, two other geese leave their formation and follow it down to assist and defend it.
They’ll stay until it dies or regains its ability to fly.
Then they either start a new formation or catch up to the flock.
Lesson: If we have the same amount of sense as geese, we will stick by each other in both good and bad times.
