Allen Grand Canyon University NUR: 550 Dr. Kim Leftwich October 28, 2020 Screening Diabetes Population Description, Including Demographics and Health Concerns Mortality/morbidity indicator: Diabetes Population: Asian Americans Intervention: Screening Comparison: No screening Time: 4 months after the initial diagnosis The number of diabetic cases among Asian Americans has been increasingly raising its concern. According to the statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, Asian Americans are 40% more diagnosed with diabetes as compared to non-Hispanic Whites. The statistics also show that 80% of Asians are more likely to have the diagnosis of end-stage renal disease as compared to non-Hispanic whites. Asian American women are three times diagnosed with diabetes as compared with non-Hispanic white women. The risk factors for diabetes among Asian Americans include obesity and overweight which triggers the changes in the body’s metabolism. This affects insulin sensitivity and response to cells. High cholesterol, genetic reasons, and cigarette smoking also lead to diabetes (“Office of Minority Health | USAGov”, 2020). Grand Canyon University NUR 550 Week 4 Literature Review Paper Synthesis of Nursing Science, Determinants of Health, and Epidemiologic, Genomic, and Genetic Data in the Management of Population Health (4.1) The nursing science will help in improving the management of diabetes for Asian Americans. This includes the cultural competency where cultural competence and understanding of one’s culture is improved. It also involves the holistic care where the total patient care is being considered. This involves the physical, emotional, social, economic, and spiritual needs of the patient. Health determinants include education and access to health services. Education enables a person to have knowledge about health issues. It enables Asian Americans to understand the causes and prevention of diabetes. Education also enables the target population to understand the type of diabetes and medications for various types of diabetes. Access to health services enables the targeted population to have regular diabetic screening. It also enables the patients to have medical attention in controlling sugar levels. The epidemiological data is used in determining the highly affected age of the targeted population. This includes the rate of the incidence, age affected, and exposure risks. With the understanding of the epidemiological data among the Asian-Americans who are diabetic specific information and focused intervention is provided. The genomic and genetic data is to identify the genetic structure of the targeted population. This helps in preventing the disease from affecting the young generation by increasing the preventive methods. The targeted population is being screened timely preventing the disease from causing health complications to the targeted population. Early screening would help in controlling heart diseases such as stroke, kidney disease, and heart and vision problems (Feely & Isles, 2016). Potential Solution and PICOT Statement The combination of the risk factors that is obesity and overweight, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, and the genetic factors have contributed in making the Asian Americans highly vulnerable to diabetes. Most Asian Americans do not know about the health history of their families and this raises the importance of the screening. Most of them also do not have access to diabetic information and therefore the screening will be the best prevention method. The PICOT statement is about reducing the mortality rates through the screening which will help in early detection of the disease. The number of those cured will be high for those who undergo screening as compared to those who are not screened (S.Pulate, 2017). A Description of How the Solution Incorporates Health Policies and Goals That Support Health Care Equity for the Population of Focus. The potential solution for the targeted population is mass screening for Asian Americans. This would be carried out in various health centers and mobile clinics. It will also be carried out in various institutions to enable more people to be screened. The screening will follow the policies and guidelines for enhancing the culture of good health. One of the things to observe after the screening is obesity whereby obese people will be guided on how to reduce their body size in preventing diabetics. Obese people have a high chance of being affected by diabetics. There should be setting up various public workout stations with professionals who will help the public in carrying out the physical exercise preventing the overweight which might result in diabetics (Wong, 2015). The food and nutrition department also need to create awareness for the targeted population concerning their nutrition. They need to be educated on the number of ingredients in the meals controlling the excess consumption of too many nutrients leading to obesity. The diabetic testing kits also need to be given for free and distributed to Asian Americans to enable them to have daily screening. This will help in identifying the disease at an early stage. The treatment of the patients should also be made free for the targeted population and this will encourage more people for screening. The patients are supposed to be treated equally without racial discrimination. The screening process needs to be confidential to prevent the stigmatization of the patients. The diabetic centers are supposed to be established for the specialization of diabetes. In conclusion, it is important to have a regular process of screening diabetes to have early diagnosis for the patients. The screening process will enable the Asian American population to identify the family health data and this will prevent the young generation from being affected by the disease. The government and health agencies also need to create the awareness of the disease by educating the public regularly on prevention measures of the disease.
