Samperio November 25, 2019 2 THE END OF LIFE The end of life care Week 4 Assignment: Research Paper Rough Draft 1. Abstract The hospice movement has gained popularity over the years to set standards on palliative care on patients approaching the end of their being (Driessen and West, 2018). There is a significant number of patients who are dying while on non-palliative care compared to individuals in a palliative care setting. This illustrates there is still a wide gap between the professional health providers for the adult patients who are at their last stages and in palliative care by informing their families on the option to take palliative care (Tapera et al., 2017). The objective of the study is to evaluate the level of care that is administered by the professional healthcare workers to share the necessary palliative care information with friends and families regarding their cherished ones who are at death bed and are yet to be admitted to palliative care centers. 2. Introduction Palliative care is provided primarily to terminally ill patients, and the treatment focuses on allowing them to have a comfortable time while at their last stages of life. Often Hospice movement is advocated for patients who have been promoted to have atheist six to twelve months of living (Hannon et al., 2016). Thus, with palliative care, the patients get an opportunity to die in dignity, comfort, and peaceful given they have a chance to bid their family and friends farewell with little or no less pain experienced at the end of their life. Assignment: Research Paper Final Draft A study conducted THE END OF LIFE 3 estimates globally, the number of patients who are identified to need palliative care is approximately 20.4 million, but the number of patients who have been provided with palliative care is a third of the sick population (Hannon et al., 2016). Therefore, it is paramount for all countries to increase the need number of centers that are offering palliative care. Patients identified to be at the end of their life are noted to suffer different multiple physical discomforts as often face life-threatening diseases (Tapera et al., 2017). However, the number of hospitals that can offer palliative care is not enough, especially in developing countries. The availed palliative care centers are often highly-priced, and the standard patient may not afford the treatment, which is essential. There is an identified trend especially in developing countries where patients who are diagnosed with terminal illnesses seek to enroll in hospital and stay there while their health deteriorates and finally die while in hospital (Tapera et al., 2017). But if the patients had the monetary capability to enroll themselves in the palliative care center, they would have a better end of life experience. But a new approach can be taken by different government hospitals by providing the medical professionals with the required training to give the desired palliative care and having a specialized team of doctors that treat respective patients with critical and complex problems (Driessen and West, 2018). By establishing this model, the patients are given a better-improved end-of-life treatment while still in the general healthcare treatment hospitals. 3. Methods The purpose of the study is to assess if the current medical practitioners have the required training to offer palliative concern to the patients who are in the death stage.Assignment: Research Paper Final Draft In under-developed countries majority of the healthcare providers have not been trained on how to provide palliative 4 THE END OF LIFE care for the patients who cannot afford to enroll in palliative care centers due to the high prices that are attached to the palliative care centers. Assignment: Research Paper Final Draft Based on the results, the medics agreed if the patient did not have the required monetary support to transfer to the palliative care centers are often transferred to a different ward for further treatment, yet they do not need more drugs. All they need is to observe the quality of life and die with dignity. The medical practitioners did not have the required skills to understand the role the family of the patient played, and the need to allow the patient to have a better transition after life has ended. It is critical to ensure the patients are allowed to leave their friends or family member with ease. 4. Discussion Based on the research that was conducted, findings indicating there is a general end of life care among medical practitioners in death beds. Many physicians suggested having conversations with family members on the possibility of enrolling the patient into a palliative center of considering palliative treatment to be a challenging topic. Additionally, most of the developing nations have very few nurses and doctors who have been trained on how to take care of patients who are at the end-of-life stages; instead, they prefer to keep subjecting the patients to further medical treatments (Murray et al., 2017). Moreover, most of the developing nations are identified to have profound cultural traits that often forbid an individual to consider end-of-life for a patient, and considering terminating a life is determined to be a taboo for many cultures. There is a lot of work that needs to be undertaken to ensure the patients with terminal illnesses are provided with the care required while in the last stages of their life (Murray et al., 2017). Hence the preference to train the medical personnel on how best to take care of the patient while 6 THE END OF LIFE at the same time speaking with the family of the patients and asking them to consider palliative care. Additionally, governments need to take initiatives to build more palliative care centers that are well equipped and are identified to be affordable to standard patients. In summary, palliative care treatment is still undeveloped in many developing nations. References Driessen, J., & West, T. (2018).
