Culture Care Theory by Leininger
Madeleine Leininger established the culture care theory over her lengthy career as a registered nurse, administrator, author, educator, and public personality, believing that culture, together with care, is a powerful construct that is crucial to health and prosperity.
The culture care theory, also known as the transcultural nursing theory, addresses the requirements of patients from other cultures in hospitals, clinics, and other community settings.
Leininger constructed the culture care theory around four fundamental ideas to assist nurses and nurse educators in developing realistic, fresh, and complete care techniques that effectively satisfy the distinctive cultural demands of the ill:
Despite the fact that culture care practices are naturally unique, there are certain common characteristics and commonalities that may be seen in the patterns and displays of care.
Relevant parts of an individual’s worldview, ethnic history, language, environmental setting, and societal structure all have an impact on culture care.
These variables have a significant impact on personal patterns that can be used to predict health, wealth, illness, and how people react when faced with unpleasant care concepts such as disability and death.
Culture-based notions about care, medicine, and health determinants can have a big impact on health outcomes.
Nursing care workers can use one of three transcultural styles of action:
preservation and/or maintenance of cultural culture accommodation and/or negotiation of culture
restructuring and/or re-patterning of culture
Theory of Humanistic Nursing
This theory, which emphasizes on the human side of nursing, was created in the 1960s by doctors Josephine Paterson and Loretta Zderad, who were interested in combining nursing with phenomenology and existential philosophies.
Clinical nurses, Paterson and Zderad believed, would be able to generate new theoretical reasons that could potentially become effective guides for other nursing care professionals by studying their own particular experiences and intimately relating with patients.
In order to focus on the complete human experience when caring for a patient, a nurse must treat the patient as more than a number—the nurse must connect with the patient on an interpersonal level in order to establish the best care strategy.
This necessitates conversing with the patient so that the nurse can combine their personal and emotional perspectives with the patient’s individual points of view in order to acquire a comprehensive grasp of the medical issue.
Nurse educators can help nurses learn how to effectively define themselves, their work, and their relationships with their patients and colleagues using the following three humanistic nursing concepts to ensure that their planned treatment strategies account for the personal and emotional viewpoints of all parties involved:
Dialogue – Creating complete communicative relationships in three ways:
Person-to-person dialogues, person-to-object dialogues, and group dialogues involving two or more persons
Community – By exchanging thoughts and experiences with one another, two or more people are able to understand the innate significance of their activities.
Phenomenological Nursing – Phenomenological nursing is a five-phased approach to helping nurses express their experiences in the framework of humanistic conversation.
preparing to understand others’ experiences and perceptions without bias or judgment while accepting one’s own worldview
gaining an understanding of the other person’s perspective on their experiences as a nurse or a patient
Analyze, classify, and compare one’s own experiences to those of another nurse or patient by reflecting on previous encounters.
based on the reality of one’s own worldview, combining the information gathered via the preceding three phases
Using the ideas derived from each circumstance, a nurse’s understanding of their own or their patient’s experiences is now portrayed as a whole concept or theory.
Theory of Need
Virginia Henderson, who was inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame and was named “Foremost Nurse of the 20th Century,” devoted her nursing career to assisting other nurses in developing their own theories.
The nursing need theory, which focuses on strengthening a patient’s personal independence while hospitalized in order to speed up their recovery, is her most deep concept of nursing.
Educators can teach nurses how to construct practical therapeutic programs that support a patient’s own strengths, allowing the patient to progressively grow more independent and finally regain their capacity to care for themselves, by including Henderson’s nursing need theory into their curricula.
The theory is divided into 14 parts, which are divided into physiological, psychological, spiritual, and social needs:
Sleep, eating, dressing, and the surroundings are all examples of physiological demands.
Communication, emotion, learning, and fear management are all psychological demands.
Faith and worship are spiritual necessities.
Achievement and recreational activities are covered by social needs.
