Benchmark – Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper: NUR 513 Week 8 Assignment Details:
Organizations of Professional Nurses
The three most influential professional organizations for clinical nurse specialists are the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS), the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS), and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). NACNS is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing the value and expertise of clinical nurse specialists in healthcare. Its primary objectives include promoting the full for clinical nurse specialists, setting the standard for clinical nurse specialist education, and funding research evaluating the value and efficacy of clinical nurse specialist interventions and practice (NACNS, n.d. ). The American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting specialty nursing certification and thereby improving patient outcomes and consumer protection. The organization’s mission is to promote uniformity in nurse certification and to raise public awareness about the critical role of quality certification in healthcare. It regulates professional specialization and the attainment of specialty-related standards (ABSN, n.d.). The AACN is a professional organization that establishes educational standards for clinical nurse specialists. The body assists training institutions in developing and implementing training standards. Additionally, it has an effect on the practice of clinical nurse specialists in order to improve the quality of care provided to vulnerable populations (AACN, n.d.).
I am most likely to join ABNS of the three professional organizations mentioned above. This organization’s professional values align with my nursing philosophy. It places a premium on integrity, consumer protection, mutual respect, as well as on product and service quality, professionalism, and excellence. Clinical nurse specialists, in my opinion, have a responsibility to ensure that the care they provide to those in need is safe and of high quality. Additionally, they should respect their clients’ diverse preferences and ensure that the care they provide promotes excellence. Clinical nurse specialists should act professionally when assisting those in need. For example, they must adhere to nursing practice standards while remaining within their scope of practice. As a result, my membership in this organization is likely to increase my knowledge of nursing philosophy and pique my interest in issues affecting clinical nurse specialists’ practice.
Controversial or Evolving Issues that are Likely to Have an Impact on my Practice
One of the emerging issues that is likely to have an on my practice as a clinical nurse specialist is a lack of role clarity. The majority of people are unaware of the roles or titles associated with our profession. The lack of clarity regarding the roles of clinical nurse specialists stems from their versatility in clinical settings. They may provide direct patient care, as well as serve as researchers, case managers, educators, and project leaders. As a result, it is critical that clear definitions of the roles of these professionals be developed. The public should be made aware of their obligations and the various ways in which their services can be utilized (Foster & Flanders, 2014).
The second factor that is likely to have an effect on clinical nurse specialists’ practice is the rapidly changing demographics of their patients. According to statistics, a sizable portion of the American population will be elderly within the next 10 to 15 years. As a result, the likelihood of developing age-related comorbidities such as diabetes, cancer, mental health problems, and degenerative disorders increases. As a result, it is critical for clinical nurse specialists to conduct proactive analysis of anticipatory measures that would address this population’s diverse needs. They should prioritize transforming health systems in order to improve the quality of care provided to the elderly population in the future.
Advanced registered nursing graduates are entering the profession at dynamic time when roles and scope of practice are shifting based on developments in legislation and policy in response to the evolving needs of the health care system. Professional nursing organizations play an important role in making sure the perspectives of advanced registered nurses are heard, and in supporting nurse specialties in their efforts to expand their and their full participation throughout the health care system.

Advanced registered nursing graduates are entering the profession at dynamic time when roles and scope of practice are shifting based on developments in legislation and policy in response to the evolving needs of the health care system. Professional nursing organizations play an important role in making sure the perspectives of advanced registered nurses are heard, and in supporting nurse specialties in their efforts to expand their scope of practice and their full participation throughout the health care system.
Benchmark: Future Scope, Role and Professional Obligations Paper
Advanced registered nurses play a critical role in the current healthcare system in America. Advanced registered nurses enhance the access to care by addressing the shortage of physicians in the state. They also work with other healthcare providers and their patients to develop care interventions that utilize evidence-based data. In doing the above, advanced registered nurses practice in accordance with their scope of practice, standards, and philosophy. Therefore, this essay examines the scope of my future role as a nurse informaticist, professional organizations that will affect my scope, and evolving issues that are likely to affect my practice.
Scope of my Future Role as an Advanced Registered Nurse
My future role as an advanced registered nurse is nurse informaticist. Nurse informaticists are nurses who have advanced knowledge and skills in the use of informatics in healthcare. The scope of practice of nurse informaticists is broad. Accordingly, nurse informaticists integrate information management as well as analytical sciences into nursing science. The aim of integrating information from the above disciplines is to understand, define, and communicate the ways in which technology-related data can be used to inform nursing practice. The scope of nurse informatics also extends to the use of health technologies and their related data to make informed decisions in their organizations (Kleib & Nagle, 2018). The ability to make informed decisions using informatics is attributable to the support that health organizations and providers acquire using information processes, information structures, and information technology.
The scope of nurse informaticists also entails undertaking the assessment of organizational needs. Nurse informaticists perform an analysis of the needs of their organizations and the appropriate health technologies that can be embraced to address them. For example, nurse informaticists identify organizational issues such as medication errors and propose the use of technologies such as barcode medication administration systems in solving them (Strudwick et al., 2019). The scope of nurse informaticists also includes planning. Nurse informaticists participate in system development and planning where they develop strategies that are needed for the successful implementation of technologies in their organizations. They also implement, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the adopted systems in addressing the needs of their organizations (O’Connor & LaRue, 2021). For example, they incorporate the inputs from other healthcare providers in ensuring the successful implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health information systems.
The scope of practice for nurse informaticists also includes the provision of their services with a consideration of ethics that influence their practice as well as competencies. Nurse informaticists promote safe, efficient and effective use of health information technologies in their organizations. They also ensure that competencies such as continued education, collaboration, leadership, and health policy are upheld in their practice (Kleib & Nagle, 2018). The American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) certifies nurse informaticists. The respective states license the informaticists. The American Nurses Association (ANA) is also another professional body that influences the scope of practice for the nurse informaticists. ANA develops and defines the scope of practice, ethics, and competencies that nurse informaticists should uphold in their practice.
For this assignment, you will conduct research on the current scope of practice for your specialty and efforts that are being made to expand that scope and the role of the advanced nurse in positively influencing the health care system. Write a 1,250-1,500-word paper that includes the following:
A discussion of as an advanced registered nurse, including any regulatory, certification, or accreditation agencies that define that scope.
A discussion of three professional nursing organizations that you think are

Re: Topic 8 DQ 1
There are more than three professional nursing organizations that interest me. I am already a member or involved with the Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN), and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) due to CCRN classes, testing and certification; and plan on attending the National Teaching Institute (NTI) and Critical Care exposition in May because of this association. So, for the sake of this discussion, I am going to explore nursing organizations I hope to learn more about as my career progresses as an APRN. The American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), and the Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (SPCN).
The ANCC is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA) that is known for high quality credentialing and certification programs. The seek to recognized both individual and organizational excellence in terms of specialties, high quality patient care, and magnet recognition. They have multiple different programs and purpose, and requirements differ based on program. What piqued my interest is that the ANCC offers one of the few certifications related to nursing informatics. They offer the Informatics Nursing Certification that requires a current RN license, and multiple clinical hours or having completed a graduate degree in informatics. The ANCC also offers many awards, scholarships and study aids to help promote education and the advancement of the nursing field.
The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) more specific to informatics. The ANIA seeks to “advance nursing informatics through education, research and practice in all roles and settings” (ANIA, 2021). Membership serves to be a good way to network, they offer continue education, give access to up to date research and the Journal of Informatics Nursing, have annual conferences, and have discussion forums for members. For membership requirements you just have to have a valid license and diploma in nursing, or being a current student of nursing, and you must pay the membership fee.
The Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (SPCN) is the smallest of the mentioned professional organizations but is most specifically related to my current role as a pediatric cardiovascular ICU nurse. The SPCN currently has about 400 members and serves as a great resource for those within the specialty to communicate with one another and share information and resources (SPNC, n.d.). The requirements are simply a membership fee. The SPCN serves a very small niche specialty, so it interests me to be able to connect with those within the same field.
In my current work, care is so specific to this population, and the pediatric population as a whole is understudied. I feel the continued education and research related to nursing practice is of upmost importance. With advancements in technology and continued advancements in research and education I feel this will continue to serve and benefit the patient population. I feel that all three of the mentioned organizations do a great job in supporting the advancement, continued educations, and dissemination of resources and information. All of these professional organization contribute to the advancement of the nursing field as a whole, and goals and motivation for doing so are very much in line with my own career interests and worldviews.

Benchmark- Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper
Nurses play significant roles in providing care for people with different illness and disabled individuals to ensure that they maintain or attain optimal health. However, in order to achieve this role, nurses must perform their duties within a specific scope of practice (David et al., 2015). Apparently, the scope of practice for these healthcare givers depends on the qualification, experience as well as membership to professional nursing organizations (Catallo, Spalding & Haghiri-Vijeh, 2014). Specifically, the role of the professional bodies in supporting specialty care among nurses has been of utmost importance in positively influencing the health system which in turn optimizes quality outcomes to patients. The role of the professional nursing organization in developing the scope of practice is a concept worth exploring considering that they determine the roles of nurses in current and future practice.
As such, the present study delves into the analysis of the role of nursing informatics organization for the scope of practice of an advanced registered nurse. The discussion will explore three professional organizations that support the scope of nursing informatics practice followed by an evaluation of evolving issues surrounding the scope.
Scope of Future Role as an Advanced Registered Nurse
Nursing is one of the most dynamic and evolving professional fields with a host of limitless opportunities. The career prospects in nursing clearly define the scope of practice since a practitioner can specialize in various lines of care. According to Liu, Lee and Mills (2015), nursing informatics (NI) is one of the emerging scopes that aims to optimize care for patients. NI is a specialty of nursing practice that incorporates the application of computer software as a documentation tool to improve the quality of care for patients. The scope is considered as a union that combines nursing practice with technology as well as data assimilation (McCormick & Saba, 2015). Nursing informatics comprises of countless tools, which include simple computers to more advanced electronic medical record systems that are diligently organized to deliver health information about patient care.
Moreover, nursing informatics is vital in the future role of advanced registered nursing practice. This is guided by the argument that the scope is one of the strongest as well as the most far-reaching and current practices of care. Furthermore, NI involves the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing care to optimize the delivery of health services to patients (Sewell, 2018). The nursing informatics software platform provides a framework for the implementation of documentation in the clinical systems and delivery of healthcare models. Besides, an advanced registered nurse specializing in informatics develops a deeper understanding of the design and the organizational framework of the healthcare industry particularly by focusing on the contemporary challenges facing the sector.
However, for one to specialize in the scope of nursing informatics, a care provider must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) although a master’s degree in the same is preferred. Nonetheless, a nurse in this specialty must have a Nursing Informatics Certificate for one to be allowed to implement clinical information systems in a health facility. In addition, nurses specializing in NI need to hold academic credentials on Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS) as well as Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) (Gaber, 2016). Further, a nurse must exhibit excellent computer skills and knowledge computer software programs particularly Microsoft Word, PowerPoint together with Microsoft Excel. Moreover, a nurse is required to have knowledge of how the clinical workflow operates in a care facility from inpatient to outpatient care settings (Sewell, 2018). Deeper knowledge about the Federally Qualified Healthcare standards (JCAHO) is also a prerequisite before a nurse opts for the specialty of nursing informatics. Nurses interested in the informatics specialty also need to be credentialed by the American Nurse Credentialing Center for them to acquire scope of standards of practice (Liu, Lee & Mills, 2015). However, a nurse specializing in informatics should develop a deeper understanding of the requirements of Health Insurance Portability and Accountable Act (HIPAA) to gain insights on the safety regulations to safeguard medical information.
Three Professional Nursing Organizations Influencing Advanced Registered Nursing
Professional organizations, as well as associations, are vital in the provision of nursing care to patients. With regard to a nursing specialty in informatics, the scope of standard practice is influenced by three different nursing organizations (Schwirian, 2013). The first and the most important organization is the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), which aims to integrate nursing science and computer science to manage data of patients (Catallo, Spalding & Haghiri-Vijeh, 2014). The organization enhances professional development for the nursing practitioners in the field of informatics and optimize information management to enhance safety for patients. The second vital organization in informatics is the American Nurses Association (ANA). The association released the Nursing Informatics Scope and Standards to guide decisions on practice for nurses in the field of informatics (Gaber, 2016). ANA is, therefore, an organization that provides practice standards that informs nurses on the recommended scope of practice on issues related to informatics. Finally, the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is an important organization that links biomedical practices with health informatics to optimize patient care.
Of the three organizations, I am likely to join the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA). The latter is in line with my future practice as an advanced registered nurse since it incorporates health information with research and practice (Catallo, Spalding & Haghiri-Vijeh, 2014). As such, membership with the organization will enable me to stay connected with the emerging practices of clinical environment through understanding the interactions in the field of technology. The mission of ANIA inclines to education and research, which are consistent with my future roles as an advanced nurse practitioner in the scope of informatics (Liu, Lee & Mills, 2015). In my transition in the field of informatics nursing, ANIA will improve my interaction with patients and this will offer a platform for developing clinical judgment based on the data obtained from the clients. Besides, I have a conviction that ANIA will develop my practice skills on how to ensure accuracy in handling patient data to minimize the instances of medication errors associated with wrong data entries.
Controversial or Evolving Issues
The scope of nursing practice in the field of informatics is a unique specialty in the nursing profession, which means that controversies in its implementation must exist (Schwirian, 2013). Concerns continue to rise that nurses specializing in the field of informatics nursing remain disconnected from the bedside service and thus are not in a position to improve quality care to patients. This is because informatics nurses miss interactions with patients and cannot develop clinical judgment on health service delivery (David et al., 2015). Additionally, informatics nursing can as well affect the professional development of nurse since it alters knowledge as it lacks clinical background required in patient care. However, amidst this controversies, an informatics nurse can still practice in the inpatient or outpatient units to remain abreast with current issues in the clinical environment (McCormick & Saba, 2015). Besides, informatics nurses work in collaboration with their peers in the clinical setting, which means that the former will still remain informed on the pertinent issues emerging in clinical care.
The other major issues on informatics nursing relate to the environmental awareness of the field and its connection with the clinical practitioners. This implies that not all nurses and other healthcare providers understand the concept of informatics nursing (Liu, Lee, & Mills, 2015). In addition, practices of informatics nursing including the Computerized Physician Order-Entry may be confused with the field of medical health record which is a different profession. As such, maximizing the success and the potentials in NI remains a major challenge. However, nursing informatics as a profession that incorporates specialty of electronic medical records is of utmost importance in the medical sector (Gaber, 2016). The profession helps stakeholders in the care facility to demonstrate meaningful use of electronic health records to optimize care to patients. Besides, nursing informatics links health services to the Medicaid and Medicare platforms which offer financial incentives to patients during care (McCormick & Saba, 2015). Through this approach, cost savings are guaranteed both to patients and the health facility.
Conclusion
Nursing informatics is a specialty field that utilizes technology to improve patient care. This scope of nursing practice enhances accuracy and offers a platform for the analysis of clinical data. The contemporary care setting is becoming increasingly data-rich and therefore informatics nursing contributes to the new knowledge of nursing practice to enhance quality care to patients. However, informatics nurses should work in collaboration with other care providers to improve the rate, readiness, and precision of documentation as a way to enhance accuracy in patient care. Generally, utilization of the nursing informatics in contemporary care is vital to streamline care management and reduce healthcare costs.
