SUGGESTED WRITTEN ESSAY TOPICS: 1.Compare and contrast two Canadian Indigenous films, analyzing how each: embodies Indigenous storytelling and world views, renovates oral storytelling for a contemporary age and engages with concepts of visual sovereignty. 2.Choose a Canadian film agency (ie.: Telefilm, Toronto Film Office, OntarioCreates), or an organization (Winnipeg Film Co-op, Toronto Liaison of Independent Filmmakers, CFMDC, etc.); or Film and Media organizations and advocacy groups (DOC, BIPOC Film and Media etc.); orFilm Festivals (Reel Asian November 8-16, ImagineNative October 22-27; or repertory film theatre and report on and analyze their history, mandate and role within the Canadian media landscape. Briefly summarize their history and mandate and how they have responded to the covid pandemic. How are they developing new strategies of exhibition or community building and how successful are these. 3.Choose a filmmaker (or individual film) screened in class, situate the work within the mediascapes of cinemas in Canada and analyze the recurrent production context, thematics, formal innovations, and storytelling strategies they employ. 4.You may (and are encouraged to) write on a topic of your choice, as long as it is relevant to the course and its major themes. If you choose to generate your own topic please consult with me before undertaking to write the paper. I will require a very short proposal for your essay, a few sentences for self-generated topics.
