The consequences of falls may vary from minor or no injuries to major limitations in functional independence, the quality of life, and extension of the hospital stay. This issue has, therefore, received a lot of attention in the healthcare industry with the focus being to improve patient safety through reduction of number of falls. Researchers dwelling on this topic have advanced several solutions and one of them is the use of video monitoring as means of reducing the risk that patients face in the healthcare system. Video monitoring is especially attractive because it not only utilizes current technology to promote patient safety but also reduces the number of nurses required for the effective delivery of care in the hospital. This literature review presents a critical comparison of the available evidence on video monitoring for reducing rates of falls and presents conclusions and recommendations for future research on the topic. Research Questions The literature reviewed for this project largely focuses on one central research question: Can video monitoring reduce the number of falls among patients? In the study by Sand-Jecklin, Johnson, and Tylka (2016), for instance, focus on high-risk patient populations and ask whether video monitoring can reduce the rates of falls in this population.
