OBJECTIVE: You will write a three-page research paper that utilizes outside research from the WLAC online database. Your research paper will demonstrate your ability to write a clear thesis, support this thesis with research from 2-3 academic articles, and your ability to proficiently utilize MLA style. PROMPT: Pick an author and story / essay from the text (it does not have to be one that we read). You may also pick any story, essay, or even a novel that you have read that is about Los Angles. How does the author you choose use language (words, phrases, figurative language, etc…) to define Los Angeles in a unique and specific way? Make sure to discuss what the author does well, as well as, what the author’s blindspots are?

You will choose a topic directly related to the study of intelligence analysis and write a 8-12-page research paper on that topic, making use of a minimum of 5 different sources. The paper must be written in APA format and adhere to the standards of academic writing. 1. What is “counter-terrorism?” What counter-terrorism methods have been successful? What can governments do to improve counter-terrorism programs? 2. “International institutions don’t matter in counter-terrorism. Just look at what happened in Rwanda.” Do you agree or disagree with this assessment? Address the role or lack of role of international bodies in counter-terrorism. 3. What is the role of the press in counter-terrorism? How has the press contributed to the escalation of terrorism? How has the press contributed to counter-terrorist activities? 4. When is a shark just a shark? Consider the movie Jaws. What could the shark symbolize in our culture, society, or collective human mythology other than a man-eating fish? Why? Support your answer. A divorcing couple with three children, a boy age 11, and two girls ages 7 and 4, cannot agree on which parent should have primary custody or on a visitation schedule for the noncustodial parent. In this hypothetical situation, which court-annexed alternative dispute method (mediation, settlement conference, ENE, nonbinding arbitration, mini-trial, or summary jury trial) do you think  is most appropriate and why? Jaigris Hodson & Phillip Vannini used more than one method to investigate their research claim. Although state societies are efficient in organizing people and resources, they also are associated with many disadvantages, such as extreme disparities in wealth, use of force to keep people in line, and harsh laws. Given these difficulties, why do you think the state has survived? Do you think human populations can develop alternative political organizations in the future?(politics) The process of racial formation is different in every society. In the United States, the “one-drop rule” and hypodescent have historically affected the way people with multiracial backgrounds have been racialized. How have ideas about multiracial identity been changing in the past few decades?
