The purpose of this report is to study one Jazz, Blues or Rock N’ Roll music composer/artist from any era. (Creedence Clearwater Revival is the band this paper will be about) After you have chosen your topic and had it approved by the instructor, study your topic in depth and write a 3-5 page report about it. Your textbook provides a very thorough list of music composers. If you have interest in a composer whose name is not in the textbook, it must be approved by the instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to choose a topic for this report.   How to get started:   1)    Select a minimum of 60 minutes’ worth of music from your chosen topicand listen to the music a minimum three times through. Recordings will generally be available online, and some may be available at the library. Before choosing recordings, you should read enough about the composer to know which works are their most significant works. 2)    Read about the composer’s life and music. If there isn’t much in the library about your composer, you can search for magazine and newspaper articles and reviews on the internet. You should spend a considerable amount of time reading, researching and learning about your topic. CD liner notes are also a good source of information, if they are provided.   3)    After your research and listening are complete, organize your notes and the music you listened to, and then answer each of the following questions in list form, in order. Keep your report at no more or less than 3-5 pages in length. No cover page is necessary.   Part I: Basic Information Provide the following basic information about the composer, the music you listened to, and the sources you consulted: A.   Composer’s full name, birth date and location, as well as death date and location (or, if still alive, where s/he lives now)   B.   A complete list of the music you listened to, including all of the following information: composition title, album name and release year   C.   Complete list of your reading resources Example: Grove Online Dictionary of Music: Article on Scott Joplin H.C. Robbins Landon: The Mozart Compendium (Schirmer Books) If you read ten short magazine articles, your list would look like this: The Story of Crosby, Stills and Nash, Rolling Stone Magazine, June 1969 CSN Take Madison Square Garden, New York Times review, July 1970, etc. Note: This is a book and article list rather than a full bibliography, which might be required in another course. For hardcover books, you should include the publisher’s name. For magazines and newspapers, give the name and issue date. You should be able to fit all the above information onto one page. You will need the rest of the pages to answer the short essay questions from Part II below. Part II: Short Essay questions There are 5 questions which should fit on the remaining pages. You can write a little more for some and a little less for others. Write clearly and informatively, and be concise. Demonstrate what you have learned about your composer and his/her music. A.   Why did you choose this composer? Had you heard this music before, or did you discover it for the first time during this project? Discuss aspects of the musical period, the style, or the musician’s catalog that attracted you.   B.   Summarize important events in the composer’s life, such as musical family background, teachers or influences, first artistic successes, and later masterworks. Demonstrate why the composer was significant.   C.   Out of your list of songs by your composer, choose three (3) favorite pieces and write a short essay paragraph about each one. Include the following: a.  Brief description of the work b.  When, where, and why the work was written c.  What you liked about the piece ·         Be as specific as possible. For example, you could say, “I like the way the strings played long running passages – it was very exciting.” ·         Use the techniques we have learned in class to understand the music, and describe it in terms of its specific elements. For example, you could say, “The melody was very regular, but the rhythm was syncopated and uneven.”   D.   Now, of the three works you chose above, take one of your favorite pieces and answer the following question about it: How did this piece make you feel? Be subjective. You may have juxtaposed reactions, or opposite emotions such as happy/sad, relaxed/tense, light/heavy. Choose the words that best describe your feelings about the music. Relate these feelings to the elements of the music itself. For example, you could say, “The slow rhythm and complex harmonies made me feel very tense. It built up to a strong climax, when suddenly, the rhythm became fast and pulsating and the harmonies changed quickly.”   E.   In conclusion, think about the composer you chose and the music you listened to. Answer these questions:   How did listening to this composer’s music and learning about his/her life affect my appreciation of music? What discoveries did I make about the music and about myself as a music listener?The purpose of this question is for you to journal your experience with the music.     Assignment Requirements -Your assignment must be 3-5 pages in length (no more or less), and it must address both Part I and Part II.   – A standard writing style format is preferred but not required. Any one of the following writing styles is encouraged: MLA Format  (Links to an external site.) , Chicago Style, Turabian, or APA. Otherwise, keep your writing typed and double spaced, with 1-inch margins and 12p Times New Roman font.   -To submit this paper, please attach it as a Microsoft Word File. If you don’t have access to Microsoft Word software, consult with the instructor of the course. Do not copy and paste your paper in the submission box. You must attach a file to your submission.

Your essay must draw on evidence from assigned readings and cite page numbers for direct quotations as well as paraphrased material. It should have a thesis statement and ideally three body paragraphs.  To what extent was the recovery from Hurricane Katrina racialized? Please use internal citations. For instance: “….” (City of New York 2019: 5) or “….” (CLCPA 2019: 5) or “….” (Klineberg 2002: 57).

For this wrap-up we’re going to do a close-listening to a piece of music and consider how it responds to broader themes in our course. Please listen to the “Dies Irae” of Mozart’s Requiem.  Then read this article from France Musiques. Then write a 250-word response that addresses the concept of composition in the Classical Period. If, as we know, Mozart didn’t complete this piece, but it was instead a posthumous collaboratively completed work, why do historians and audiences adhere to an auteur theory around this piece? What is it in the sound of this piece, in the history of the mass, or in the legend of Mozart that allows a legend like this to persist? Please consider some of the reading and discussions we’ve already had, as well as perhaps doing a little reading on the history of the Requiem mass, and the Dies Irae specifically.

Use Leigh Raiford’s essay, (The attached reading) answer the questions, below. This essay is fairly long and a bit theoretical, I suggest that you first skim/spot read the first sections in order to get a sense of her aims, as well as the history of lynching images; then, focus your reading on sections III (3) – V (5). Your answers to the prompts should be 1-2 pages, single-spaced. Raiford writes of photography in relation to “the burden of memory” as well as “critical black memory.”  What does she mean by the latter?  Does Raiford believe that Emory Douglas, and/or Kerry James Marshall, and/or Ken Gonzales-Day provide examples of critical black memory? Explain, referring to their works as well as her argument about them.  Length: 1-2 pages, single-spaced.

Is the medium the message? How do new media alter the relations between a product and its consumers or audience when it is remediated through new media technologies? Draw on three different works of popular culture that have undergone remediation, or look at one work that has gone through three forms of remediation. How has each remediation changed its content or its relationship to different audiences? What remains the same? Does remediation lead to a profoundly different set of relationships between culture, consumers, and industry?

Instructions What do you think of the belief that Islam is meant to be a universal religion and that it corrects the mistakes of Judaism and Christianity? Background information: The Quran purports to be the final and most perfect revelation from God. As such, the religion that it expounds, Islam, is meant to be a universal religion, correcting the mistakes and misunderstandings of Judaism and Christianity. Traditionally, the understanding is that while the original teachings of Judaism and Christianity were correct, their adherents misunderstood Allah’s messengers and practiced the intended religion (Islam) incorrectly. I’m not saying anyone is right or wrong, but Muslim tradition states that the Quran is the perfect and final revelation from Allah (God). How useful is the transnational migration conceptual framework that Roger Waldinger outlines for understanding the experiences of Deepak Unnikrishnan’s family as ‘temporary persons?’ What are (in your view) some of the significant resonances and/or disjunctures between the former and Unnikrishnan’s story?

You are to design one of the five systems associated with a transportation vehicle (any transportation mode is acceptable: car, boat, air and space, rail) that can traverse transportation pathways for an alien.  STOP!!  You are not designing an entire vehicle, just one of the systems listed below!!   NOTE:  You can mix-and-match different features and components from different styles of vehicles if you like. The system must contain all (explained further below) components of a vehicles system. Transportation Design Assignment/Grading Criteria Written Report   You will write, at a minimum, a two-page summary (double-spaced) on the experiences you had working on this project. Discuss each of the elements used from the steps of the engineering/technological design processes, as spelled out on pages 5-7 above. You are required to write this summary, as it accounts for 40% of the grade for this project.  You will submit this at the end of the semester along with the remaining project files. 2.  Rough Sketches   You are to develop a minimum of one (1) rough sketches for your selected system (as shown on page 6) for the vehicle system for the alien. This will help you when it comes time to do the parts in TINKER CAD. Note:  Remember, it is a rough sketch, details are less important at this point of the project.  Look closely at the alien’s appearance:   a.  What will you need to consider in your system design?    b.  How will the occupants enter/exit or mount/dismount the vehicle with           ease?    c.  Also think about cargo to be loaded/unloaded. What clever storage        solutions can you add to improve your vehicle?   d.  Consider personal items and cargo. What inspiration can you take from the plant and animal kingdoms to improve your vehicle design? 3.  System Model   From the rough sketches, you will generate, in TINKERCAD, a complete 3-D model of the system you have designed, as well as a 3-D model of the individual components of your system components.    Note:  Once you have the completed model in Tinker Cad, you can click on the “Send To” button in the upper right corner, download the file to your computer, and insert it into the Engineering Notebook (explained below). Once you have done that, simply go back to Tinker Cad and separate the parts, download each part, and add it to the Engineering Notebook. This will become your parts list. Once you label and number all of the parts on each of the sheets, simply copy and paste those images to the last sheet of your Engineering Notebook. This will be your assembly instruction sheet. Please be sure to include the steps needed to assemble the parts. You do not have to be that precise with the instructions. Just give me enough detail so I understand the basics on assembly. Hint:  You may use images from the internet as inspiration to help you create the components. This might save you some time. Try to find images that have less complicated assemblies. Do not simply copy and paste the images and label them. You are required to develop your own parts/systems in TINKERCAD. You must also cite the website at the end of your write-up in the reference section. Use APA format.  Example of a 3-D model:  Railcar Suspension  ENGINEERING NOTEBOOK (Section 2 of the textbook and lecture). An Engineering Notebook is used to document all of the work you have completed on a project. It may also be used to write notes, display research done to support the project, and other items of interest. They are typically bound pages of graph paper, with all writings done in ink. The bottom has a signature block for both the individual working on that particular component, or system, with a witness block to further document the work being done.  The reason for the dual signatures, is to document the parts/components being produced belong to the company producing it. This is critical if a company wishes to obtain a patent for any of the parts, or systems being produced. It also shows ownership of the design in the event a competitor attempts to steal the idea and make it their own. Each of you will keep an Engineering Notebook, but with a twist. Instead of hand-writing the features of your components, you will simply create your design in TINKER CAD. You will make the complete design as the first page, and all other pages will show the individual components, labeled, by name, and part number. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS RELATING TO THE SYSTEM YOU SELECT  This is not part of the Grading, but things to think about as you design your system! 1.  Structural, Passenger, and Cargo.   a.  How will the operator be kept safe and secure while the vehicle is in transit?    b.  Also think about any passengers or cargo. In what ways will you reinforce your vehicle       to protect the occupants and cargo in the event of an accident?    c.  What safety features will you add?    d.  How could your vehicle design be adapted for other purposes with the alien’s world?    e.  Consider cargo, emergency, recreation, sport, work, and other. How can you make your       vehicle more automatic/autonomous? 2.  Propulsion system design Considerations:     a.  What will power your vehicle’s movement?    b.  Will it use fuel or an external force?    c.  What possible energy sources could be used?  3.  Guidance system     a.  What types of navigation equipment, information displays (GPS, Satellite, glide slope indicators) will you need for your vehicle?      b. Where will they be located? 4.  Control System     a.  How will your vehicle speed up and slow down?      b.  How will it start and stop?      c.  How easy will it be for the alien to operate your vehicle?      d.  Consider steering, and other controls?      e.  Think about what transport systems are needed to work with your vehicle?      f.  Consider signaling, route networks, traffic control, and other.  5.  Suspension     a.  Will your vehicle have wheels, axles, or springs?     b.  What type of wings will you have on your aircraft?     c.  What type of hull will your ship have?     d.  How will you keep a train vehicle in contact with rail? Environmental Conditions Considerations:     a.  How will the vehicle be safely operated in different environmental conditions?
