As a parent, Sandra is emotionally unavailable and has ignored her children for much of their lives, except when they supply her with drugs and/or alcohol. EMPLOYMENT: Sandra’s employment in the human resources (HR) department of a local hospital was recently terminated. As a result, Sandra receives assistance from the state for housing and food. She also currently works part-time as an evening custodian at a local school. SUBSTANCE ABUSE: Sandra has been addicted to opiates for the past 5 years and has been an alcoholic for most of her adult life. CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR: Sandra is currently on probation after colluding with a nurse to steal opiates from the hospital to “manage her pain” from a car accident that occurred 5 years ago. ____________________________________________________________________ Father: Joseph Keen AGE: 53 years old FAMILY: Joseph has been married multiple times and is currently married to Sandra Keen. HEALTH: Joseph is prone to severe mood swings and periods of impulsivity and irrational behavior; however, he refuses to see a mental health professional for help. EMPLOYMENT: Joseph is currently unemployed because he is in prison. He used to be a long-haul truck driver and spent long periods of time away from his family. SUBSTANCE ABUSE: Joseph is an alcoholic who becomes very violent when he has been drinking. Prior to being put in prison, Joseph often frequented bars—where he picked up women whom he ultimately conned, manipulated, and physically intimidated to give him money to support his drinking habit. Joseph frequently brags to his fellow prisoners about how much money he has conned out of women, remarking that it is not his fault that the women are “dumb enough” to give him money. CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR: After a long night of drinking and fighting with Sandra, Joseph attempted to strangle her. As a result, he was sentenced to 3 years in prison. He does not think the attempted strangulation is a “big deal” and often jokes that, if he were not so drunk that night, he could have “finished the job.” __________________________________________________________________ Son: Shawn Keen AGE: 17 years old FAMILY: Shawn is fiercely loyal to this family and feels that he is the protector of his mother and sister, in the absence of his father. SCHOOL: Shawn is an average student but refuses to follow directions or rules. He becomes very combative when asked to do so. He has also been suspended from school multiple times for fighting. The most recent suspension occurred when Shawn punched a classmate in the face after the classmate accidently bumped into him in the hallway. When asked why he is aggressive with his peers, Shawn replied that his peers are conspiring against him and intentionally provoking him to get him into trouble. Shawn regularly skips school to be with friends. Despite receiving multiple phone calls about Shawn’s absences from school, Sandra does not attempt to discipline Shawn. SUBSTANCE ABUSE: Shawn drinks with his mother and uses marijuana with his friends—a few of whom sell drugs. CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR: Shawn is a member of a local gang whose crimes are petty, including shoplifting and vandalism. In most cases, Shawn has not gotten caught for these crimes and does not have any remorse for committing them because, technically, he is “not physically hurting anyone.” Currently, Shawn is on probation for truancy and theft. ____________________________________________________________________ Sister: Tracey Keen AGE: 22 years old HEALTH: Tracey has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She currently takes medication and sees a mental health counselor at the community clinic one to two (1–2) times weekly to manage her symptoms. FAMILY: Tracey currently lives with her mother and brother. She also has a 3-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. Tracey’s boyfriend, Victor, is “self-employed” (i.e., sells drugs). Victor often beats Tracey with his fists or a belt when he has been drinking or when she “provokes him.” Tracey often waits for Victor to pass out and steals opiates to supply her mother’s drug habit. SCHOOL: Tracey dropped out of high school during her junior year, after being expelled for attacking a teacher. EMPLOYMENT: Tracey is receiving disability payments due to her bipolar disorder. She also receives state assistance for childcare. CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR: Tracey is currently on probation for writing bad checks to banks. She initially engaged in this behavior because she believed it was the only viable way to make enough money to support her daughter—asserting that state assistance is “not enough.” She also argues that the banks “won’t miss the money” and that banks “steal money from people all the time.”

Option 2: The Armenian Genocide Ethnic hatred is not new to the human race and ethnic hatred also goes hand in hand with some of the causes of World War 1 that we have discussed this week, namely nationalism and imperialism. In nationalism, the people not only believe their countrymen (those who look, talk, sound, and believe like them) are not only “better” than people of certain other countries but they also have the right and possibly even the responsibility to conquer areas with those inferior to them and take whatever resources they feel they need. Add to this the need for the leader of a country to be able to blame a certain ethnic group within that country for their problems. Such was the case in the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Turks launched a winter offensive into the mountains of southern Russia early in the war and suffered a severe defeat, both at the hands of the Russian army and the terrible weather they encountered. The Sultan needed a scapegoat to blame the loss on, so he picked an unpopular ethnic minority, the Armenians. Since the people seemed to believe the story, the Ottoman military rounded up as many Armenians as they could and marched them away to their fate. Chapter ReviewFor most of its history, McDonald’s has been an extraordinarily successful enterprise. It began in 1955, when the legendary Ray Kroc decided to franchise the McDonald brothers’ fast-food concept. Since its inception, McDonald’s has grown into the largest restaurant chain in the world, with almost 37,000 stores in 120 countries.For decades, McDonald’s success was grounded in a simple formula: Give consumers value for money, good quick service, and consistent quality in a clean environment, and they will return time and time again. To deliver value for money and consistent quality, McDonald’s standardized the process of order taking, making food, and providing service. Standardized processes raised employee productivity while ensuring that customers had the same experience in all branches of the restaurant. McDonald’s also developed close ties with wholesalers and food producers, managing its supply chain to reduce costs. As it became larger, buying power enabled McDonald’s to realize economies of scale in purchasing and pass on cost savings to customers in the form of low-priced meals, which drove increased demand. There was also the ubiquity of McDonald’s; their restaurants could be found everywhere. This accessibility, coupled with the consistent experience and low prices, built brand loyalty.The formula worked well until the early 2000s. By then, McDonald’s was under attack for contributing to obesity. Its low-priced, high-fat foods were dangerous, claimed critics. By 2002, sales were stagnating and profits were falling. It seemed that McDonald’s had lost its edge. The company responded with a number of steps. It scrapped its supersize menu and added healthier options such as salads and apple slices. Executives mined data to discover that people were eating more chicken and less beef. So McDonald’s added grilled chicken sandwiches, chicken wraps, Southern-style chicken sandwiches, and more recently, chicken for breakfast to their menu. Chicken sales doubled at McDonald’s between 2002 and 2008, and the company now buys more chicken than beef.McDonald’s also shifted its emphasis on beverages. For decades, drinks were an afterthought, but executives couldn’t help but note the rapid growth of Starbucks. In 2006, McDonald’s decided to offer better coffee, including lattes. McDonald’s improved the quality of its coffee by purchasing high-quality beans, using better equipment, and filtering its water. The company did not lose sight of the need to keep costs low and service quick, however, and continues to add coffee-making machines that produce lattes and cappuccinos in 45 seconds, at the push of a button. Starbucks it is not, but for many people a latte from the McDonald’s drive-through window is comparable. Today, the latte machines have been installed in almost half of the stores in the United States.All of these strategies seemed to work. Revenues, net profits and profitability all improved between 2002 and 2013. By 2014, however, McDonald’s was once more running into headwinds. Same-store sales declined in 2014, impacting profitability. Among the problems that analysts identified at McDonald’s was an inability to attract customers in the 19- to 30-year-old age group. Rivals offering healthier alternatives, such as Chipotle Mexican Grill, and “better burger” chains that appeal to this demographic, such as Smashburger, are gaining ground at the expense of McDonald’s. A recent Consumer Reports survey ranked McDonald’s burgers the worst among its peers. Another problem is that the quality of customer service at McDonald’s seems to have slipped. Many customers say that employees at McDonalds are rude and unprofessional. One reason why McDonald’s employees might be feeling stressed out is that the menu has grown quite large in recent years, and many restaurants are not longer staffed given the diversity of the menu.In 2015, management at McDonald’s took steps to fix these problems.
