Each student will be a member of a group this term as well as a group facilitator.  Please take a moment to reflect and to answer the following questions in your paper: What group experiences have you had? And how may these experiences impact your participation in our group? What are your educational and itnerpersonal goals for this group experience?  How might you go about working on and achieving these goals? What do you anticipate in this group experience you are about to embark on? Any fears or concerns you have about being in a group?  Leading a group?  If so, how might you work through these and/or help address them with the group? What do you think is needed for people to feel safe in our group? What do you bring to the table for helping to create a safe environment for others – both as a facilitator, and as a participant? Was there anything in your feedback that surprised you? Explain your response. (My results are I believe that Hispanic and White people are equal).. What do you think being culturally competent means? Describe a situation where you experienced or observed a situation that was not culturally sensitive. What do you think could have been done or said differently?

Write about your early literacy experiences and how they relate to the definitions of literacy that were assigned for Week 2 reading and viewing.  How you personally define literacy. Although I have made the order “rewriting”, I think it’s more of an editing process, but I want to give my editor a free range.  This is my answer to one of the prompts of the UC transfer application. I have also put the question on the draft paper. And this is the question: 2.     Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced. I don’t intend to put any quotes or sources. The prompt has a 350-maximum word count and I have 345 words in, so I need help with putting in a sentence or two. I also need help with tying my answer to the question better at the end. And pointing out any wordiness will be appreciated. I also want a 100-word comment on how my answer makes you feel, and what could be better elaborated if you pretend like you are an admission officer, and then make a suggestion or edit on the draft.  To clarify, my answer to the prompt has to have 350 words maximum. The comment I request is 100 or less and will be on top of 350 word count, so the end product will be 450 word count maximum. I have put down a 100 words for the comment, and the more the merrier.

Which one of the influences below do you think will have the greatest impact on a student’s success in college? 1. Outside Influences (transportation, money, work, family, time to attend class and do class work, poverty, technology, income insecurity, food insecurity, lack of technology at home,…) for right now I choose the #1 Money, work and Family.

You are the Assistant Director of Campus Activities at New England State University, a comprehensive state institution in rural New England with 9,000 students.  Your campus serves many first generation college students and members of the military, as you are located in the same small city as an Army base. Part of your professional duties requires you to co-advise 50 student organizations; your co-advisors of these organizations are made up of various members of the faculty and staff on campus.  Your job as co-advisor is to help the organizations plan large activities, stay within their budgets, and train new organization leaders on campus policies and procedures. On Monday morning, you receive an email from the Director of the GLBT Center on campus, asking you why you have allowed the Campus Republicans to host a famous speaker who is known for his public anti-gay rhetoric.  In the email, the Director tells you she found out about the speaker when a “very upset student” brought a flyer to her office.  She requests a meeting with you and your Director that day.  The event is scheduled for the Thursday of this week and this is the first you have heard about it.  As you begin to investigate the event, you learn that it has been advertised on campus and in the local community paper; it is being co-sponsored by a local conservative organization not affiliated with the college. What do you do?  With whom will you meet/collaborate?  Can you/should you cancel the event?  What are your other options?  Which student development theories will help in your decision making process as you work with the student groups involved?
