Create a Handout for ELL Parents
For this task, you will create a pamphlet suitable for distribution to parents, especially those with children with special needs such as English language learners and/or with mental or physical disabilities. In your pamphlet, present to the parent or caregiver recommendations for effective practices for teaching special populations to read and write in school and at home. Since the parent or caregiver will most likely not be fluent readers and speakers of English, or may have limited formal schooling, be sure to include meaningful graphics and graphic organizers, and simple, but informative text. To ensure that your parents will try to read and follow your recommendations, avoid using too much jargon, too much clutter with smaller font size; and be sure to use a design that your colleagues will ask to use for their parents! Length: 3-4 pages Your pamphlet should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your paper should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Review The Basic APA Style tutorial as needed.
Numeracy Skills
Successful teachers recognize the connections between conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world application when teaching children to make sense of numbers. They embed opportunities for children to concurrently develop numeracy skills in all math areas, including the contexts of counting, cardinality, and base ten concepts. For this assignment, select three state math standards for kindergarten related to number sense (counting and cardinality) for the selected grade level. USE GEORGIA MATH STANDARDS Using the Number Sense Standards Table, create one math activity for each standard that is developmentally appropriate for the selected grade level and that uses manipulatives. Each activity should provide: Real-world application for the math skill taught Manipulatives and other resources Differentiation strategies to meet the individual needs of all students Formal and informal assessment strategies to ensure mastery of the standards Write a 250-500 word rationale for the hands-on learning activities you created and how each supports learning of the selected standards. Discuss how each activity, manipulative, and assessment is developmentally appropriate for the selected grade level. Support your matrix and rationale with 2-3 resources. While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. Researching the Issue Instructions The Rhetorical Situation For this paper, you will research the controversy, surrounding your issue by describing its history and summarizing at least two different positions on the issue or problem. Begin this paper with this in mind, I should know where you stand why you want to even put in your time with this problem. Why do YOU care? Before people can think of a solution to a problem, they must know the history of the controversy and the range of positions available. Paragraph one/introduction: 1. I want to know some background information on your issue, so draft detailed and elaborate answers to the following questions: State the issue What caused the issue? What prompted your interest in it? Who is interested in the issue and why besides yourself? Paragraph two/body paragraph of one point of view: 2. Your audience will also want to know the current, major positions on the issue, so draft descriptions and summaries of 2 different positions or points of view. This is where you will need to research and use Google Scholar or our college library database. Description 1 of pt of view 1 to include: summary What are the main claims of those who advocate this position? What reasons do they provide for those claims? What evidence do they use to support their reasons? An assumption is a point an author doesnt even try to prove. Rather than proving the assumption, the author simply assumes it is true. So, what assumptions underlie their arguments for position 1 if there are any? Paragraph 3/2nd body paragraph of the second point of view: repeat above Paragraph 4/Conclusion: Finally, you should highlight the relationship between the two positions youve described by answering the following questions: On what points do advocates of these positions agree, on what points do they disagree? What are the reasons for disagreement? Restate why anyone should care about this problem/issue. Other Requirements Your paper should be at minimum 2,5 pages.. It should be double-spaced, typed in Times New Roman font, with 12-point character size and one-inch margins all the way around For more information on Computer Literacy read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_literacy
Language Impairment
Providing interventions for the wide variety of disabilities that special education teachers encounter is often challenging. Because of this, educators may need to conduct their own professional development to research current trends and professional practices related to specific disabilities. Research a peer-reviewed article that studies a specific language impairment related to K-12 students. Address the following in a 1,000-1,250 word essay: What was the research question? Who were the subjects? What methods were used? What were the results of the study? How could you use this information to make instructional decisions in the classroom? Rationalize how this information helps in responding to the needs of students with specific language impairments. Discuss how reviewing literature from professional journals can help you in your professional development and practice. Support your work with 3-5 scholarly resources.Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide For more information on Language Impairment read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_disorder
Basic English Discussion
I was very young, I think I was no more than five years old at the time. I still lived up north with my parents and for whatever reason, we were taking a trip on a steam locomotive. Now I have been on tri-rails before, and subways, but never a steam train. It was huge! Lease to say, I also was very tiny at the time. I watched the steam come from the chimeny off the engine, heard the high pitch of the whistleblowing, and these things seemed pretty exciting at the moment. It was not until we started to board the train, that I looked and saw that the base and wheels that held up the train carts where seemingly a lot narrower than the cart itself. Not much thought into what I noticed until the train began to move and pick up speed. All I remember is being terrified the whole ride. Since the carts were much wider than the wheels they were on, it made the train sway side to side. I watched every talk and move around the train like nothing was to be worried about, while I sat as still as possible next to my mother praying to myself that this train would not tip over, I was almost positive it was going to. I do not remember much of anything else during this train ride or what happened after. The only thing that has been imprinted in my memory from that day is how scared I was to be riding the train and just waiting for us to tip over. Group Formation
Group Formation This learning activity is due by Day 7. Locate and read the article listed for this assignment titled Groups as Systems. Zajonc states, Synergy can take either a physical or a mental form. The physical presence of others is often arousing, so more work is accomplished. Even ants work harder when there is more than one of them on the job (Henman, n.d., p.2). In the mental sense, synergy forms when a type of collective intelligence and shared memory begin to develop as the group matures. Reflect on a group experience where you noticed this shift to synergy with your group. (Some ideas: at a human services agency where you work, a different occupation, serving on a committee, a group in college, etc.) Describe this experience as vividly as possible, with plenty of detail and analysis of as many group members (in regards to their contributions to attaining synergy) that you can recall. This assignment should consist of 350-500 words. You are not required to seek additional sources but cite and reference the required reading in your work if you have integrated any thought, idea, or quote from the material. Reference Henman, L. Learning Experiences
Making Meaning In your role as coach and/or mentor you will likely need to help teachers understand how to make connections between the following three processes (a) making meaning of documentation evidence to (b) planning for goals and (c) learning experiences for children. After reading chapter six, and the scenario below, respond to the discussion prompt: Imagine that you are a coach who is supporting a teacher who is observing her students during small group activity time. The teacher records a lot of dialogue (words and actions) of the children arguing about the rules for putting away materials. You ask the teacher to identify a question of interest for both her and the children based on what she learned from her documentation. The question is, What are the rules (procedures) in our classroom? As her mentor, you want to begin her inquiry with backward planning. The formula you present to the teacher is as follows: a) The desired result for the children is to . . . b) The observational evidence of the children shows . . . c) Possible learning experiences could then be . . . Together, you and the teacher decide to approach the inquiry the following way: a) The desired result for the children is to . . . learn classroom rules. b) The observational evidence of the children shows . . . confusion about routines and interest in figuring them out. c) Possible learning experiences could then be . . . engaging in experiences that allow the child many ways to hear stories and repeat, describe, and act out a sequence of daily events used in the classroom community, making signs that remind children of the rules, etc. In your group response address the questions below. Groups are encouraged to share thoughts and options for answering the questions, and use Chapter 6 Appendix A Form, to support their explanations. Each group member must provide potential answers to at least two of the questions and must contribute to deciding on the response for all five questions. As in the previous weeks, one group member should post the group’s final responses and include the name of the contributing How might you support this teacher in relating the goal to a professional value, standard, or competency? What are some ways to support how the teacher might be more effective in this area? How might you support this teacher from a strengths-based perspective? How could the teacher gather the evidence before and after the implementation of the inquiry? For more information on Learning Experiences read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experience_API
