Read (and listen to) Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” and Gilbert Highet’s “Subway Station.” Reread and annotate the stories as needed. They are available in the Course Text and Readings course menu option on Blackboard. Re-examine any videos as you deem helpful to writing this essay. Choose ONE of the two choices for the fiction essay assignment. The stories and the grade sheet are attached as well. 1. Read Gilbert Highet’s “Subway Station.” Write an essay that examines its imagery and tone in relation to its theme. In other words, what is the theme of the work and how do imagery and tone help achieve it? How does the narrator’s experience with public transportation compare to yours? Be sure to use plenty of textual evidence (see Essay Requirements). Be specific. Review the Shared Elements of Poetry, Short Fiction, and Drama on Blackboard and your text for information on theme, tone and imagery. Chap 5 “Tone and Style” (147+); Chap 6 “Theme” (184+); Chap 13 “Imagery” (432+). Be sure to use plenty of textual evidence (see Essay Requirements). Addressing the tasks and maintaining strong organization (which includes a degree of compare and contrast) is key to a successful essay! 2. Read Jamaica Kinkaid’s “Girl” (attached). Write an essay that compares and contrasts your own childhood lessons learned with those of the narrator’s daughter-figure. Detail at least one significant similarity and difference. Be sure to include discussion of the story’s tone and style and how they might contribute to a specific theme. Review the Shared Elements of Poetry, Short Fiction, and Drama on Blackboard and your text for information on tone and style, as well as Chap 5 “Tone and Style” (147+). Be sure to use plenty of textual evidence (see Essay Requirements). Addressing the tasks and maintaining strong organization (which includes compare and contrast) is key to a successful essay! Even though the story’s title is “Girl,” the males in class can write a great essay on this topic. Childhood lessons learned are childhood lesson learned. At least don’t immediately dismiss this topic if it does not align with the gender with which you identify. Essay Requirements: – A full paragraphed essay of a minimum 600 words (about 2.5 pages), maximum about 800 words (3-3.5 pages); choose your words wisely and stay on topic! – Use proper MLA conventions: margins, font, spacing, heading, etc. – Include an original title centered at the top of the essay – Use evidence from story: Minimum of 6 borrowings – 5 quotations and 1 paraphrase. Follow The Quotation Process when borrowing. Since there are no paragraphs and only about 1 page for each story, no in-text or works cited page is needed. However, heavy emphasis will be placed on following the quotation process – providing context, introducing, and explaining. – As this is academic writing, please remember to use a certain level of formality in your writing: avoid slang, clichés, texting language, informal and weak wording like you, I, thing, interesting, this quote means, good, bad etc

A literary essay comparing two texts (The Kite Runner and a novel/play of your own choice) ? This 500-550 word (5 paragraph) essay will examine what YOU have learned/understood about the importance of literature as a result of the selections in the course, and/or how you have been impacted; what have you learned about yourself? As with all written work in this course, the MLA style is required.

Objective: Create a position and defend that position through a combination of analysis of primary sources and the inclusion of scholarly, secondary sources. What does that mean? You need to develop an argument and support it by both analyzing a film and its source material as well as provide research to support your argument. The Assignment: Argue whether you believe that the literary source material or its corresponding film is the superior piece of literature? What does superior mean? Anything you want: more engaging, more enjoyable, more thought-provoking, etc. Analyze one of our films to demonstrate the significant differences between its literary source material and its film counterpart. What does this mean? Do a deep dive in showing how the movie and the literary work that inspired it function in relationship to each other. What are the key differences and what impact does that have? What are the key similarities and why is it important that these be maintained? Does the film maintain narrative continuity or thematic continuity? Both? Neither? Why is that important and what impact does it have on its audience. Why does that make one superior (however you defined that) to the other? Quite simply: Why is the book better than the movie or why is the movie better than the book? Remember: You must have a works cited page accurately detailing in MLA format what sources you use. It is best to use a source that is a bit older as there is more writing on it, so if you use one of contemporary pieces, you might find it harder to find good sources. Online only sources like websites, Wikipedia, etc, are not academic sources and therefore do not count towards the minimum requirements. That said, literary reviews from established literary magazines are acceptable sources for this essay.

The speaker says “such waltzing was not easy.” At the time they danced, the father was drunk. The speaker says, “The whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy.” Also, this dance took place at home for we see that the speaker was taken to bed. The speaker says, “Then waltzed me off to bed still clinging to your shirt.” Also the speaker mentions that they romped until the pans slid from the kitchen shelf implying that they were dancing at home in the kitchen. The speaker is a child because in the poem he mentions romping until the pans slid from the kitchen shelf. The word romping is commonly used to refer to children. Also he was as tall as his father’s waist. The speaker says,“ At every step you missed, my right ear scraped a buckle.” 2-Connotative.The central theme in the poem is fear that some sons have for their fathers. This can be derived from the act of the father beating the son. While this poem explores characteristics of the theme of parenthood, it more closely explores the obstructions of the smooth relationship between father and son. The father beats the son and the son fears the father, creating an unbalance in their relationship, and a rift in it. The author views parenthood as a power over an individual. This is seen with the father having, and exploiting, such power over the son. He uses his power to take out his frustrations on his son, knocking down pans in the kitchen with the force of his beatings. 3-Poetic. Is written in an imagery and has a rhythm. I like how The poet goes into great detail describing the father, “The hand that held my wrist , Was battered on one knuckle” (Roethke). He also describes how he is injured while dancing, “At every step you missed, My right ear scraped a buckle” (Roethke). Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds in the same line such as the sound of /i/ in “Still clinging to your shirt” (Roethke). There is only one simile used in this poem. It is used in the third line, “But I hung on like death” (Roethke).

Final Exam Essay- choose one of the three novels and then choose one of the four characteristics from the handout “Literary Place” and discuss how the chosen characteristic is reflected in the novel. The Essay should be 3 to 3 ½ pages, typed, double-spaced, and titled. The Four Characteristics to choose from: there are four key characteristics to it no matter how geographically different the literary place might be. These characteristics are as follows: 1. It is contested in terms of race, gender, class, religion, sexuality, etc. Different mentalities / cultural entities struggle for a dominant or visible position within the place. 2. It is fluid because of historical forces. Even though it is static in terms of physical placement, it is dynamic in terms of actual meaning due to the passing of time. 3. It is interactional and relational. The different mentalities / cultural entities will use the space to either interact with one another or separate from one another. 4. It is generally defined by inequality and difference. Because of the three prior characteristics, it is almost impossible to see it as a place where all individuals are equal and deserve equal rights.
