In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave we are introduced to a form of humanity shackled in chains, in a form of perceptual bondage. In The Matrix by the Wachowski sisters we are introduced to a dark future where humanity is imprisoned physically and perceptually by a form of manipulative Artificial Intelligence. And in our daily lives we also experience a limiting of our social perspective regarding Covid-19. If Neo could rescue humanity from Plato’s cave, what would that rescue look like today in a world where people are constantly battling the influence of misinformation while trying to stay safe? Are there any modern figures in reality that have acted as a Neo/Morpheus or a Plato, in the current age of coronavirus, liberating humanity from their incorrect thinking? Select a commercial that you feel you can write an essay about. Consider the following when constructing your essay: 1. Intro with Thesis as the last sentence of your Intro. (Thesis should refer to the attempted purpose of the commercial). 2. Body Par. 1- Describe the ad-what is happening? What is being sold? Who is involved? Where and when does it take place? 3. Body Par. 2 & 3- How is the product advertised? What strategies are used to sway the consumer to buy the product? (Appeals? Visuals? Music? Other strategies mentioned in the powerpoint and videos?) How effective are these strategies? 4. Body Par. 4-Mention any stereotypes that are implied in your commercial and the effect these might have on the audience. If no stereotypes are present, comment on how well the director created a politically correct commercial, and substantiate your claim with evidence from the commercial. 5. Variety of word choice (diction)- no major words are repeated, no DEAD WORDS (thing, good, bad, nice, etc) 6. Vague pronouns are not used (it”, “this”, “that”, etc.). Instead, use a synonym for the noun that the pronoun refers to 7. No outside research is required. Poetry analysis is not really as scary as it may seem. When reading the poems, pay attention to the poetic conventions that really stand out: voice (speaker in the poem) word choice, or word order imagery figures of speech (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, understatement, metonymy, synecdoche, apostrophe) sound (rhythm, rhyme, assonance, alliteration, consonance) form symbolism, allegory, myth theme All of these aspects help to create meaning for the reader. Which rhetorical element creates the greatest meaning? Which did you understand the best? That is the element that you will want to address in your analysis essay. The analysis essay does not require outside research. As a matter of fact, please avoid using outside sources (these usually cause issues with plagiarism in the essays). The analysis essay is merely a “reader response” essay. State your claims about the text using only evidence from the poem to support your points. in-text citations for poems should include the line numbers only. Quotes from poems use slashes to indicate line breaks in the original poem. Do not type it as you see it on the page: As an example, William Carlos Williams writes, “so much depends/ upon” (1-2). The essay only needs to be about two pages in length. *All essays must be formal, so do not use 1st or 2nd person or contractions. And, the essay should have a Work Cited page with only the poem listed. The author’s full name and the title of the poem should be in the introductory paragraph.
