Putting Authors in Conversation

For this essay, the skill set that you are learning is to control two sources equally, blending them into one cohesive argument and analysis. To do this, you will be discussing how the one text Chinua Achebe’s “Dead Men’s Path.” resounds with the ideas in Freire’s “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education.” In other words, this is somewhat similar to a “compare and contrast”, but more in-depth: instead of just a simple compare andcontrast such as “this author says this, but the other author says that,” you will be going deeper into how/why these ideas differ, where they converge, how they might influence one another, and whether the ideas build on each other. A good way to think of it is to put the two authors in conversation with each other about the theories and practice of education. While these authors are talking about similar issues withineducation, they aren’t making identical arguments–instead, they are focusing on specific ideas that are of particular interest to them. Your task is to discuss how these authors’ ideas compare toone another in terms of what they say about education. Basing your ideas in their texts, some questions you might ask yourself in order to put them into conversation are: Is your chosen text’sauthor building on the thoughts of Freire? Do they take different perspectives on the shared topic, and how? How do their ideas reflect one another? Where do they depart from one another? What does each author say about each of your chosen claims? Do they disagree, and why? Where is there common ground? How would they suggest moving forward? Don’t feel like you need to answer every single one of these questions–they are just some things to think about as a jumping off point to start brainstorming about how these ideas relate to one another.Your thesis statement (argument and claims) should incorporate both texts into a discussion about the education system, educational philosophy/pedagogy, classroom dynamics. Note: Please highlight the thesis. the thesis must be fully developed (with a “because”) and EACH quote must be presented in the body discusses the three questions needed for analysis: 1) What is the quote saying? 2) Why is that important? and most importantly 3) How does that support the thesis?

2. Try activity 1.2 from the book, where you pull one list idea from the “list of lists” and create it! Or if music is your language, try 1.5 (labelled 1.4 in the PDF version, which is a newer edition than ours). This one reads: “Listen, alone and intently, to a piece of music you care about. After listening for five or fifteen minutes, write anything the music suggests to you. If it has lyrics, don’t use the words of the song, but the images in your own brain, the words that paint your feeling. Don’t try to make sense, or even sentences; let the music dictate your words.” Whatever you create should be roughly a page in length (ballpark estimate).

[SOLVED] Argument Paper

Argumentative Essay Assignment Revised Due Dates as of November 24, 2020   The Assignment:  Write a first draft of the argument paper that will be 5-6 pages.  This should focus on our theme of “How technology is affecting and changing communication for people?”   The purpose is to present your side to this one issue and narrow topic and present one opposing view.   You will support your claim (thesis statement) with reasons that are backed up with relevant and objective research.  There will be one opposing view for this draft.  Your research will include secondary sources and one visual: table/figure, which will be in the background paragraph that helps to establish the exigence or importance of your topic and issue.  Formatting the background paragraph is explained on a handout located in the Argument Paper folder.   Locating Sources for Research.  For this paper, you must include a variety of sources; they cannot all come from Web sites (Newspapers) or all .coms.  Search SMC’s library online catalog, search for a book, search online databases, find newspaper articles, and use the search engine Google scholar at www.googlenews.com, or www.yahooissues.com .  In addition, observations or experience from your personal life are not allowable.      Refer to the following handouts: “Research Guide for Papers,” “Sources Acceptable for Academic Papers.”  Both of these handouts are on Canvas.   Issue Question, Thesis Statement and Claim:  Your paper should have one issue question that frames your argument. You cannot take both sides.  Does your thesis clearly include a claim that answers the issue question and is it debatable?  Is your thesis a claim of value (judgment) or a claim of policy (change in current policy)?   Audience/Point of View:  An effective argument is tailored to its audience.  The reasons and the types of evidence you offer, the needs and values to which you appeal, terms defined, all depend on your audience and the type of claim. Ask:  What does your audience know or not know about your topic?  The audience is your instructor and classmates.  Never assume that the audience is familiar with your topic or terms.  You may need to include definitions and relevant details to help the audience understand your position.  For this argument essay, you will use only the third-person point of view.  No, “I” “We” or “You.”   Reasons:  Body Paragraphs. [Average length—8-10 sentences). The body paragraphs to support your argument will stay focused on proving why to your thesis statement/claim. There will be one opposing paragraph that will follow the most important reason and this will also include a refutation based on your previous research. For the length of this first argument essay, you should have at least four distinct and relevant reasons to support your thesis and one opposing source.     Method of Organization For Reasons:  Organize reasons that support your argument in the order of importance.  Begin with a reason that is least important and end with the most important reason that supports your argument.   You may include two (2) different block quote for this paper:  Put this into the most important reasons and they will be the only source for this reason.  The block quote should be 4-6 sentences.        Visual:  Include one visual aid:  chart/table to support your reasons in the background paragraph to help establish the importance of your argument. Visuals should not be placed in the introduction, the opposing view, and the conclusion. NOTE:  Visuals are used to support the reasons that validate your thesis/claim.  Refer to the handout on Canvas that shows how to format a table/figure. Website for a table:  googleimage.com.   Opposing Point of View:  Include one opposing paragraph (8-10 sentences) that addresses an opposing point of view.  Strategically the opposing paragraph will follow your most important reason and precede the conclusion.  Include one source (quote and/or paraphrase—2-3 sentences (do not use a block quote). Follow the opposing source with your rebuttal to the opposing view in this paragraph:  quotation of 2-3 sentences. Rule:  One opposing view (source) per paragraph.    MLA Format/Documentation/Sources/Evidence:   The paper must follow MLA 8th style format, typed, double-space, 12-font Times New Roman, and last name and page number in the header.  The minimum number of sources for this assignment is 8 and the maximum is 15.   The table in the background paragraph is a source, but it does not go on the works cited page.  This information is directly under the table in the essay.  Incorporate evidence into your essay using correct MLA format. It is important to integrate your sources with correct signal phrases, proper punctuation, and parenthetical references at the end of the sentence, and analysis–explain how the source/evidence supports your topic sentence.  For this paper, you should include a variety of sources:  scholarly journals print, and sources from the Internet.  You may not use blogs, Wikipedia, or sources that do not meet the five criteria:  objective, current, accurate, reliable author/publisher, and relevant coverage. Also for each source cited on the works cited page there will be an annotated bibliography:  2-3 sentence summary in a block quote format.       Evaluation/Grade Sheet:   This first essay is 15 points.  The grade sheet is posted in the argument folder on Canvas.  This must be turned in on time in order to earn the points.  This essay will be the first draft and you will then edit/revise this and revise this to the 7-8 page essay required.   Group Work:  Submit names of all group members on the worksheet
