Research activity

Select one country and assess its population pyramids for this year, and 20 years before and after. Take screenshots of the pyramids to include in your essay. Use those pyramids to assess and reflect on “Population pyramids: Powerful predictors of the future” regarding changes and shifts in your country’s population and the potential for overpopulation. Consider which stage of the demographic transition your country is in. Additionally, you are also required one outside source that addresses birth rate, death rate, life expectancy or migration rate for your selected country.

Items you should note:

The population pyramids and their shape, compared to Figures 3.18 and 3.19 (73-74)

A discussion of demographic transition for your country

A discussion of an additional population statistic from an outside source.

Be sure to record correctly formatted citations for each source you access.

Writing Activity

Using your acquired outside sources and textbook, construct a cited essay of 500-750 words that describes the potential for overpopulation for your country using the data and ideas you have gathered and assessed. Your researched information should be cited, and quoted material should not exceed 15% of the paper.

Your friend, an 8th-grade earth science teacher at the local middle school, is organizing an Earth Day celebration for his students and their families. He knows you have recently been learning about environmental policies in this environmental science class and has asked you to be one of several guest speakers at the event. He would like you to explain to the students how scientific research and public awareness of an environmental issue led to an environmental policy or law. The goal is for the 8th-grade students to understand how people and communities (scientific community, government bodies, citizens of a country, etc.) can effect positive change for the environment.

Here are his instructions:
Students participating in this class will be able to complete a comprehensive literature review.
Students will be able to write a descriptive bibliography

Requirements: Term Paper, field report, literature review and/or presentation.

Each student is required to complete an exhaustive literature review of their assigned topic. Students are required to turn-in a completed binder at the end of the semester. This binder will include the following: copy of complete articles placed in sheet protectors, a cover sheet with the students name, semester and year, classification, and degree program, annotated bibliography of five (5) articles, a current resume that includes your work and education experience, and a complete table of contents with each title as it appears on the paper. Acceptable publications to retrieve articles are books, journal articles (Journal of Animal Science, Professional Animal Scientist, Feedstuffs, etc.) trade magazines, newspapers etc. Internet websites are not acceptable. We are looking for scientific material or breaking technology.

• Annotated bibliography: Prepare an annotated bibliography of five (5) references. List the reference first (alphabetical order), then the annotation. Annotation should include (1) why the study was completed, (2) what was done, (3) what was found, (4) what it all means, and (5) a comment on the quality and usefulness of the study.
