[SOLVED] HIV And Influenza
Compare and contrast the public health responses to HIV and influenza epidemics. There are many ways to try to respond to the threat from a pathogen. These include surveillance of nonhuman host populations for potentially dangerous new strains, surveillance of hospitals to track unusual occurrences of diseases, attempts to predict the evolution of novel strains, development of vaccines, development of drug therapies, campaigns to change peoples behavior, implementation of biosecurity practices for livestock, development of tests for disease and protocols for who to test. Please describe what measures have been employed to prevent or contain HIV and influenza outbreaks, and why they have been employed. For example, one method to prevent influenza epidemics is to implement biosecurity practices for livestock. Wild avian flu viruses can jump into farmed poultry before jumping from poultry into humans. Therefore, implementing basic biosafety measures (such as erecting physical barriers to prevent contact between wild birds and poultry, restricting the movement of poultry between farms, and vaccinating poultry) can greatly reduce the risk of the infection of poultry with wild influenza viruses. As others join in the discussion, you should read what has already been posted and then add substantively to the discussion. Please remember to post by Wednesday! Get in the habit of checking the discussions as often as you can to see what others have posted and to respond. The earlier in the week that you begin posting, the deeper the conversation and learning will be. We will go through each question one at a time together, discussing each one until we are ready to move on to the next question as a class. I will assist you in moving through the questions. The first question in this discussion is opinion and experience-based, so you can begin immediately. When people are diagnosed with a condition like cancer, they are often compelled to gather information about their condition and its treatment. Their family members are as well. The health professionals who work with these individuals are also tasked with staying up-to-the-second on the latest information. Most likely, social media will play a role in the information-gathering process for both groups. As you consider the discussion questions, imagine that you are working as a professional in your area of emphasis with an individual who has been diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer. A health professionals role is often to provide information and share sources for additional information. In addition to printed information often provided on cancer and treatment protocols, many patients will want to learn more on their own through the Internet and the interconnectedness of social media. In your opinion and based on all you have learned in your time at Excelsior, discuss the following questions together: What are some concerns with the use of social media to learn more about cancer? What kind of consumer-focused social media would you be likely to recommend, if any? What type of social media would you use to gather information from the health/medical perspective? For subsequent questions please meaningfully integrate what you learned from the course materials, as well as additional supporting articles or videos that you choose to include. What are some key criteria in establishing the credibility of social media resources? To what extent do these criteria vary by type of social media, e.g. blogs, discussion boards, videos, Facebook posts, and tweets? Blogs are especially popular in the area of cancer treatment, for both professionals and consumers. Share with the class an example (with direct hyperlink) of a credible blog related to colorectal cancer. What makes this blog a credible source of information? Share an example (with direct hyperlink) of a cancer-related blog of questionable credibility. What diminishes the credibility of this blog? As you discuss your findings, consider the bigger picture and discuss the credibility of the information for various stakeholders, including people affected by cancer and health professionals. To close out the week, lets consider how we communicate our concerns about social media with our patients/consumers and their loved ones. Assume that the individuals family has found a discussion on a cutting edge treatment approach to advanced colorectal cancer on a social media web site. The family is excited about the potential. You have serious concerns about its credibility. How would you address these concerns with the family? Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. [SOLVED] National Healthcare Issues
Assignment: Agenda Comparison Grid and Fact Sheet or Talking Points BriefIt may seem to you that healthcare has been a national topic of debate among political leaders for as long as you can remember. Healthcare has been a policy item and a topic of debate not only in recent times but as far back as the administration of the second U.S. president, John Adams. In 1798, Adams signed legislation requiring that 20 cents per month of a sailors paycheck be set aside for covering their medical bills. This represented the first major piece of U.S. healthcare legislation, and the topic of healthcare has been woven into presidential agendas and political debate ever since. As a healthcare professional, you may be called upon to provide expertise, guidance, and/or opinions on healthcare matters as they are debated for inclusion into the new policy. You may also be involved in planning new organizational policies and responses to changes in legislation. For all of these reasons, you should be prepared to speak to national healthcare issues making the news. In this Assignment, you will analyze recent presidential healthcare agendas. You also will prepare a fact sheet to communicate the importance of a healthcare issue and the impact on this issue of recent or proposed policy. To Prepare: Review the agenda priorities of the current/sitting U.S. president and the two previous presidential administrations. Select an issue related to healthcare that was addressed by each of the last three U.S. presidential administrations. The Assignment: (1- to 2-page Comparison Grid, 1-Page Analysis, and 1-page Fact Sheet)Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid Use the Agenda Comparison Grid Template found in the Learning Resources and complete the Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid based on the current/sitting U.S. president and the two previous presidential administrations and their agendas related to the public health concern you selected. Describe the administrative agenda focus related to the issue you selected. Identify the allocations of financial and other resources that the current and two previous presidents dedicated to this issue. Explain how each of the presidential administrations approached the issue. Part 2: Agenda Comparison Grid Analysis Using the information you recorded in Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid on the template, complete the Part 2: Agenda Comparison Grid Analysis portion of the template, by addressing the following: Which administrative agency would most likely be responsible for helping you address the healthcare issue you selected? How do you think your selected healthcare issue might get on the agenda for the current and two previous presidents? How does it stay there? Who would you choose to be the entrepreneur/ champion/sponsor of the healthcare issue you selected for the current and two previous presidents? Part 3: Fact Sheet or Talking Points BriefUsing the information recorded on the template in Parts 1 and 2, develop a 1-page narrative that you could use to communicate with a policymaker/legislator or a member of their staff for this healthcare issue.
