Discuss the factors that led up to the terrorist attacks on 9/11 2001. How did events in Israel, Iraq, and Iran influence the beliefs and grievances of Osama Bin Laden? How did the War on terror progress following the 9/11 attacks? What changes did the war in terror bring for American domestic and foreign policies? **PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE** Use the information from these lecture videos to answer the prompt (required).

Essay question: How did the Cold War help and hinder the progress of the African American Civil Rights Movement that spanned from the 1950s into the 1970s? In what ways were leading activists like Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Bayard Rustin, Diane Nash, Malik El Hajj Shabazz (Malcolm X), and others helped and hindered by the political climate of the Cold War Era? 1. Choose at least one of the following films / television programs to watch in its entirety (the whole thing): The Vote (PBS 2-Part Film) 2. Read the relevant chapter or chapters in the Foner textbook that cover the subject / time period in the film you have chosen. While you are reading take notice of how many examples given are of men and how many are of women.  When women are mentioned, are they mentioned by name? How many details are given?  3. Compare how the subject is covered in the film and textbook. 4. Review the additional material on the same subject that is included in the course packs and class assignments.  You may also want to do your own research on the subject you have chosen. As you research the individual sub-topics that are included think about these questions:  Who are the women that are mentioned in the textbook chapter? What more can you find out about them?  What sections of the chapter do not mention any women?  Who are the women who are being ignored?  For example, in chapter 17 Foner describes the Anti-Imperialist League and gives a list of prominent members – all men.  This description gives the impression that the league was an all-male organization, but the league included many women, including a women’s auxiliary.  5. Write a critical essay analyzing how the topic is portrayed in the textbook (good, bad, indifferent, etc.)  Identify strengths, and make suggestions for improvement – things to add, things to subtract, things to rephrase, etc.  Rewrite relevant sections of the textbook as needed.    Describe what examples you would replace or simply add new examples to various sections of the chapter highlighting the contributions of women.  You may also describe how you might expand existing examples of women by adding more details.  Chapter sections might be re-organized, instead of including women as the last example, they could be moved to the first example.  Wording might be changed, instead of a sentence that reads “women also participated” you might write “men and women participated.”

Thus, the policy-makers of the United States were not militarily involved in the political affairs of these regions.    2-) The legacy of colonial rule in Africa was of minor importance. Following their declaration of independence, all African states quickly achieved political stability and created prosperous nations in the continent.   3-) After World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union mutually respected and accepted their ideological differences. For this reason, post-war reconstruction in Europe did not provoke any serious tension between these two powers.   4-) Negative effects of the 1929 Great Depression were only limited to the United States. European nations could avoid the adverse political and economic impacts of the depression.   5-) Repressive military regimes in the Latin and Central American countries ended the economic dependency of these countries on the industrialized nations. These military regimes also prevented outside intervention in their domestic affairs.   6-) World War I and World War II were entirely disconnected from one another. I want you to do a little bit of speculative history. Based on what you’ve read in the textbook  and primary sources this week, but also knowing the current state of affairs in the United States, where do you think American History goes next? Say it’s the year 2050 and you’re writing a history of the United States from 2008-2020. What major events would you include? What major changes would you highlight? What primary sources would you want people to read? You can be as creative as you’d like to be. We tend to focus on a lot of the political history of the United States in survey classes, but do not feel like you have to stick to politics in your answer. If you want to discuss popular culture (music, TV, movies, podcasts, Twitch, etc), religious history, gender history, or anything that captures your interest, go for it. Just think about what *you* think the most important stories from the last 12 years have been and how you’d tell those stories with the evidence to support your version of it.
