The image below is John Gast’s 1872 depiction of “American Progress.” In a way it was an echo and celebration of earlier settlers colonial tendencies expressed by John L. O’Sullivan’s 1845 notion of “Manifest Destiny.” What does the image “American Progress” tells about the American past? How does the image give us early warning about the contradictions of progress and its destruction, which is actually depicted in the image but also in actual U.S. History before 1872, and continued throughout the mid twentieth Century with the dropping of atomic bombs on civilian populations during WWII?

The era of 1000–1300 CE was a time of religious conflict, colonization, migration and global exchange. Describe the development of the four cultural spheres: the Islamic world, India, China and Europe. Comment on the ways in which these areas were interconnected as well as the extent to which each of these spheres were distinct from one another. There should be 1 section for each of these topics.

Answer the following question as thoroughly as you can.  Organize your answer into several paragraphs to ensure clarity and this enables you to have a structured answer that moves through ideas in a manner showing organized thought. Do not just throw a bunch of facts on the paper.  Anyone can look up facts and type them into an answer; therefore, that is not sufficient.  You need to show insight, analysis, and solid understanding of the concepts in the material and how concepts interact.   There is no word count minimum or maximum.  You need to show you understand the material and provide enough information and analysis to make that clear.  More is not always better, but it is not possible to answer fully in a half page.  Typically, answers are 3-4 pages; however, some excellent 2 page answers earn As if succinctly showing thorough understanding.    If you cite sources, you need to show that as you would a normal paper; however, you are not required to do any research for this and the expectation is that you can find the answer fully in the material provided in the unit.  There are no points for having done outside research for this question and you can earn an A without outside sources.   Type your answers using a computer, not a phone.  You can either type below the question on this document or in a blank document.  Be sure to save your answers to your computer in Word.  Just typing into this downloaded document will not automatically save your answers on D2L.  You need to save what you type as you would a regular paper, then upload that saved document to the Assignments folder in D2L.  Remember, it must be a Word Doc or PDF (not a shared link) for D2L to take it when you upload. Social Justice Movements in American History Purpose:  The purpose of this project is for students to complete a research project which combines historical research about a social justice movement in American history with knowledge of current social issues. Knowledge:  Students will learn about the historical basis of a social justice movement that exists in the present day.   Skills:   Through the completion of this project, students will acquire the following skills:   1.     Identifying an academic vs. a non-academic source.  2.     Locating information contained within academic sources. 3.     Composing an original thesis as the basis of your writing assignment.  4.     Formatting an essay according to APA format. 5.     Writing a research paper to support your thesis. Tasks:   1.     Identify a social justice movement that began prior to 1877.  Examples include but are not    limited to:  African-American rights, women’s rights, institutional reform, early labor.    2.     Conduct background research on your movement.  This is where you gather more information about your movement, narrow down your focus and choose the sources that you will use for your research.  You must use a minimum of 5 academic sources.  Examples of academic sources include the following:  books, academic journal articles, websites (reputable websites typical end in .org or .edu), newspaper articles, magazine articles, documentary films, and interviews.  AS the purpose of this project is to gain experience on college-level academic research, encyclopedia articles should be avoided.  Under no circumstances should wiki sources be used (these are not peer reviewed)!  If you have questions about whether or not you have chosen an academic source, please consult with the professor.     3.     Compose a thesis statement.  Make an argument about the social movement you are researching (this should address why the movement is still relevant today).    4.     Create an outline for your essay.   The outline should begin with an introduction (where you will present your thesis statement).   The first section of your essay will discuss the historical background of the social movement you have chosen.  The second section of your essay will discuss current issues related to the social movement.  For the final section of this project, students will write a conclusion reflecting on how their historical research enriched or affected their perspective on the movement they researched and/or discuss any contributions they may have been inspired to make to the address the present issue.    Write your essay.  Your essay must have an introduction, a thesis statement and include all three required sections.  It must be no fewer than 6 pages in length, with the first section having a minimum length of three pages (including introduction), the second section having a minimum length of two pages, and the final section having a minimum length of one full page.  It must also follow APA format and include a cover page and a works cited page.
