INSTRUCTION: Students will select and answer ONE of the following questions: 1.   Using ONE specific example, discuss how the law can evolve to meet the needs of society. 2.   Explain the Adversarial System of justice.  Include in your essay whether or not you think it is an effective system?  Why, or why not? 3.    Describe how a common law system works.  Do you think it is an effective system?  Why, or why not?  (Don’t forget to include the impact of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.) 4. Our judicial system focuses on factual guilt instead of legal guilt OR our judicial system focuses on legal guilt instead of factual guilt.  Students will argue their point of view for their ONE chosen topic and use appropriate academic terminology to support themselves.  It is important that students defend their position with facts and research from properly cited sources. Students should also use a selected court case or specific legislative example that supports their position. The citation format is APA, which must be used for in-text citations and for the reference page. This assignment is worth 20% (1/5) of your final grade.  Summary: Contemplate the topic statement on our judicial system above and the position you take. Make sure to plug in a specific example that helps prove your point and use the appropriate academic terms. Edit and cite.  Format: The assignment should be a 0800-1000 word (TOTAL-if the assignment is longer, it will not be marked) formal essay, double-spaced, size-12 font, times new roman black. You require a title page with your name, word count, and instructor name, course code and section number. If you do not have one or any of these, marks may be taken off. You also require a reference page which shows your sources (course readers and the reading material) utilizing APA. Research, select, and read several scholarly articles or papers on the International Criminal Court and the United States’ objections to becoming an equal member of the court, including the Obama administration’s renewed overtures in the direction of U.S. participation. The United States government has intermittently opposed an International Criminal Court that could assert jurisdiction over and prosecute, US military and political leaders according to an established global standard of justice. The Clinton administration showed great interest in American participation and entered into negotiations toward the International Criminal Court treaty. Still, the Clinton administration position would have seen America retaining substantial independent power along the lines of its permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. If taken, this would have enabled the United States to veto any cases it opposed. When other nations refused to agree to such an unequal justice system, the United States lobbied to weaken and undermine the court. George W. Bush came into office just as the court was nearing activation for all member nations and strongly opposed both the court and US participation. As a substitute, the Bush administration attempted to enter into bilateral treaties with other countries, ensuring immunity of US nationals from prosecution by the court. To those nations that expressed reticence, America threatened to terminate economic aid and withdraw military assistance, among other steps. The Obama administration reflected a return to the Clinton policy approach and made significant efforts to explore US participation. Although it has been participating with the court’s governing bodies and providing support for prosecutions for some years, the United States has continued to resist full membership in the International Criminal Court because of concern about possible charges against US nationals. The recent Italian court conviction of 23 US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) intelligence officers stands as an example of what the United States refuses to be subject to. Using citations to a published authority from your research, present a proposed policy program for criminal justice organization leaders that would allow the United States to reap the benefits of participation in an enhanced global partnering effort to address both terrorism and transnational crime, while simultaneously providing sufficient autonomy to ensure that US citizens do not fall victim to foreign or international politics or misapplications of the judicial process by other nations. In writing about your concept, discuss the impediments to implementing it. Include any relevant political, cultural, and legal factors that could serve as obstacles to your innovative concept. How will accountability of these leaders improve US organization function and processes? Respond to the following questions (at a minimum): How is the concept organized or managed by key players? Why is the concept that is being offered to the United States sound? What makes it effective or could make it effective? What are the political, legal, and organizational cultural implications for the concept? What laws or legal consequences are relevant to this problem? What are the economic implications for the concept, if any? What are the impediments to the development and integration of the concept?

Overview The dollar appreciated sharply in the weeks following the election of President Donald J. Trump. By the time of Trump’s inauguration, the dollar had reached levels not seen for more than 10 years. The strong dollar seemingly posed a threat to Trump’s campaign promise to reduce and even eliminate America’s trade deficit. In pursuit of this goal, the incoming Trump administration threatened to renegotiate existing trade agreements and to label the Chinese government a “currency manipulator.” By April of 2017, Trump was giving public voice to his views on the dollar, stating in an interview to the Wall Street Journal that he thought that the “dollar is getting too strong” (Baker et al. 2017). Trump’s statement, and his continued support for low interest rates, contributed to a weakening of the dollar over subsequent months. By the end of the year, the dollar had fallen by about 10 percent relative to its December 2016 value but remained almost 15 percent above the post-crisis floor that it reached in 2014. Should the Trump administration strive to weaken the dollar further in pursuit of reducing the trade deficit? Critics of such a policy highlight the costs and potential dangers associated with a weaker dollar. Some analysts argue that market expectations of prolonged dollar weakness could lead to higher interest rates in the United States. Higher interest rates would raise the cost of investment for the private sector and raise the federal government’s borrowing costs. Others suggest that a determined policy of undervaluing the dollar will eventually spark foreign retaliation, thereby raising the possibility of another “currency war” like the one Brazil accused American policy of triggering in 2009–2011. More profoundly, a loss of foreign confidence in the commitment by American policymakers to a strong dollar could cause foreign governments to shift from the dollar to the euro as their primary vehicle currency and reserve asset. Such a shift would precipitate a major collapse of the dollar and substantially raise borrowing costs in the United States. For advocates of this position, a strong dollar is a critical American interest. What is the right value for the dollar? Community partnerships are an important component of community policing (COP) programs. COP programs do a number of things to create opportunities for citizens to assist the police in crime control such as participating in block watch programs, neighborhood clean-up programs, citizen police academies, citizen volunteer officer programs etc… In your opinion are these programs successful at improving citizen trust and confidence in the police? Are they successful at easing tensions that occur between citizens and the police in protests, and highly publicized incidents of police use of force? Why or why not? Write an essay in which you will trace back the criminalization history of marijuana in Canada. Your essay will expose the role and the reasons invoked by the RCMP, which maintained a strong opposition against any attempt of decriminalizing marijuana for recreational purposes. Since Fall 2018, the use of marijuana for recreational use is legal. According to our Prime Minister, Canada’s previous system did not work.
