Most individuals, when they think of justice believe that it should be fair, equal, and impartial, yet, when justice is meted out we sometimes find out that none of the three are present. We all have heard at least once in our lives that life is not fair, we discover that not all are equal, and that favoritism is rampant in society. Such is life and then we must take a course in ethics and we look at things and question right and wrong. How do we maintain our morals and remain ethical? This week’s activity is dealing with justice and law. You will complete three short activities related to justice and law; the instructions are as follows: Who Should Be Promoted? You are on a promotion committee to recommend to the chief of police a candidate for a captain’s position. All the nominees are lieutenants and have received similar scores on the objective tests available for the position. The following are the candidates: A thirty-nine-year-old woman who has been with the police department for nine years. She has obtained a college degree and a master’s degree by going to school at night. She has spent relatively little time in her career on the street (moving quickly to juvenile, community service, and DARE positions). A forty-six-year-old white male who has also had experience in command positions in the army before joining the police force. He has fifteen years of experience—all in patrol positions—and has a college degree. A forty-year-old Hispanic male with ten years of experience. He has been very active with the community. Several community groups have endorsed him, and they demand that there be Hispanic representation on the command staff. He also has strong support among Hispanic officers, serving as their association president. He has a two-year college degree. Whom would you endorse? Why? It is important to think critically about your chosen topic and clearly express your thoughts about it in writing. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court’s ruling was that money spent by corporations, associations, labor unions is a form of free speech and therefore protected under the First Amendment. There can’t be limitations on the funding of political broadcasts on candidate elections.  Yes, I think laws or the US constitution should change to reduce the influence of money in American elections.  I say this because we see that not having limitations makes it easier for the wealthy to financially “support candidates and campaigns they favor”. Money is influencing the elections and the source is not always revealed. Only a small percentage of people can afford to give 1,000 or more to a candidate. While Pelosi spends millions on an election per year, this only makes it politics be unfair. This increases the contribution limit and instead influences the wealthy people and groups over the elected official. An example from the podcast shared that this opened the door for “unlimited political spending by corporations and unions”. The podcast also mentions how the ruling affects the whole balance of the money and influences people have over the candidates.  If the laws were changed it would also help resolve the campaign finance problems and will allow for them to work on their current system. Another reason I say yes is because this will allow for more money to go to every election. This happens by multiple Political Action Committees, PACs being allowed to support a specific candidate and raise money for them.” Statement #2: I definitely think there should be laws against money in politics let alone influencing politics. The 2004 American Jobs Creation Act sounds like it is a great benefit for our country; But it was really to help with tax breaks to the lobbyists involved. It was reported that they received a 22.000% tax benefit. Come on… Who are you really helping? That is why money shouldn’t play a part in politics, its morally not right! in 2010 alone there was 3.5 billion dollars spent on lobbying. That can fix small countries… Its why Oil Companies get tax breaks but make a lot of money…or Fruits and Veggies get no breaks… Strange! Why do we spend 8 – 10 times more than any other country for cancer medicines?  in 2010, the citizens united case opened pandoras box by allowing corps and agencies to give unlimited cash amounts…. Hmmm!  I can’t say if Ami Bera ideas were aligned with mine.. But it shouldn’t be fair that American Crossroads can come in and simply change course by adding their money to a campaign. That in itself is unjust.  Honestly …. As long as we let them have control over the narrative … The truth” will never be presented.. It can’t be with other underlining agendas. But, I’m afraid we’ve come to far to turn back now!
