Authorities in every academic discipline share certain expectations and norms for publication in their scholarly journals and texts. Analyzing each author’s quality of evidence, awareness of the target audience, and potential for personal bias will help you determine the appropriateness of books, articles, and other documents that you read. For this Assignment, you evaluate a scholarly article. As you review articles, consider the ways that the different backgrounds of the authors and their readers may affect both the creation and the interpretation of the writing. To prepare: Select an article from either the Walden Library or the Internet related to public policy and administration and your field of interest. Consider how different audiences could interpret the selected article. Pay particular attention to the quality of evidence that the author presents. List the problems faced by today’s police departments that were also present during the early days of policing. Regardless of the crime, a person is accused of, he or she is innocent until proven guilty. Further, everyone must be treated fairly in the system. Fairness is found in the due process right given by the 5th amendment. This means that everyone must have their “day in court” or the right to be heard. Other schools of thought state that crime control is more effective – ie if a person commits the crime, then punish them! This way, others will learn to abide by the law. The constitution is an important document because helps the judicial system determine what is unconstitutional and what is not. It is the law of the land.  The first ten amendments of the Constitution are called the Bill of Rights and that is where you can find all the rights that we have as Americans. Some examples include the right to bear arms, the right to assembly, speech, press, etc. These rights are clearly defined, and you cannot make assumptions because they are clearly written out in the Constitution. My overall perspective of the supreme court is that they are important to uphold the constitution, and for every law and amendment that is not in “plain English” is carefully thought of and interpretive. It is important as the supreme court helps with the checks and balances.
