Part 1: Word Overview, Past to Present Offer a broad overview of the word, from past to present. The overview should suggest how the word came into the English language (its etymology), how usage of the word has changed over time, and how the word is used now. Note: good overviews rely on facts, quotations, and specific details; don’t confuse overview with over-generalization! Quantify: Discuss how and how often the word is used in Shakespeare’s works. Use Folger Digital Texts to help locate other instances of the word, but look to other useful databases that can help you learn more about the word and how it’s used in Shakespeare. Bolster your claims with facts, quotations, and statistics. Qualify: Be sure to offer qualifications and contextualization that help to convey why the word is significant in Shakespeare’s works. For example, we don’t learn much from an unqualified/non-contextualized fact such as: “The word x occurs 30 times in Shakespeare’s plays.” Is 30 a lot? A little? Qualified/contextualized facts are more telling. They help the reader make sense of the data. Consider, for examples: • “The word x occurs 30 times in Shakespeare’s plays, and 11 of these occurrences—nearly 40%—are in Hamlet.” • “Although the word x never appears in Shakespeare’s Sonnets, it appears 30 times in his plays” • “The word x occurs 30 times in Shakespeare’s plays; more than half of these occurrences are found in Tragedies while only three are found in Comedies.” On the last page of your submission, include a short reflection (approximately 100 words, although you need not be as careful with word count here as with the Word Entry) in which you highlight the best accidental or random discovery you made along the way—a fact or insight that is intriguing, but that was not quite what you were trying to find. This accidental discovery might be something about your word that does not quite fit into the “Overview” or “Usage and Significance” sections, or it might be a tangential fact about something you happen upon while researching your word.

Essay #5: Adding Research The purpose of this assignment is to create a substantial revision of Essay #4 by adding information or arguments from additional sources to last unit’s essay. Please remember that I am looking for a prominent difference between Essay #4 and Essay #5. You are not simply adding in additional research. Your task is to revise Essay #4 based on feedback from your peers and instructor. These revisions will include a substantial overhaul to Essay #4 which should include adding in additional research to help validate and discuss your points.  As you search for sources, consider these higher-order concerns. • Focus: Is your main claim, thesis, or central message clear? Does every element of your essay consistently support your thesis? Do your minor claims support your major claims? Have you defined the issue at hand? What can you do to further emphasize your focus? • Development: What evidence does your essay provide to support your focus? Have you included examples, explanations, details, and descriptions that help persuade your readers of your position? Have you anticipated and answered your readers’ objections or counterarguments? Have you considered alternate perspectives? • Rhetorical Strategies: Have you identified a target audience for your essay? What do you do to appeal to that audience? Does your essay rely primarily on emotional appeals or logical appeals? What do you do in the essay to establish your credibility as a writer? • Additional Outside Sources: How could adding outside perspectives strengthen your argument? Have other writers, scholars, or researchers addressed the issue at hand? Are your claims backed by a consistent pattern of reliable evidence? Are basic factual claims backed with evidence or sources? How does your essay engage with counterarguments or alternate perspectives on the issue? • Organization: How does the structure of your essay support its message? Could the essay be re-structured or re-ordered to better support your arguments? Are paragraphs and transitions used to guide readers through your ideas? Before you turn in this assignment, create a bullet list of the changes and revisions you made. Include this list either as a second file or an additional page. Failure to submit this required information will result in a grade deduction for this assignment. After you turn in this revision, your instructor will provide further guidance for revising this piece for your portfolio. Your instructor will probably also provide pointers for revisions for the second essay you will revise for the portfolio in Unit 7. Sample Student Essays I am not providing sample essays for Essay #5. By this time in the course, you should be quite familiar with what I am looking for when it comes to development of ideas. You should anticipate what I expect when it comes to making revisions. You are free to review the samples I provided in the Unit 4 Revision Project as the process is very similar. Guidelines for Essay #5 Length/Due Date : approximately 1,000-1,400 words, due Sunday, November 29 midnight Central Standard Time (CST). Style/Format : This, as all essays in EN106, should be formatted in a standard scholarly format. (Most students follow MLA or APA guidelines, which are outlined in Easy Writer .) No matter what format you follow, be sure to do the following: • Use 12 point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced. • Use 1-inch margins top, bottom, and sides. • Although no cover page is needed, you should include your name, my name, the course number/title, and date at the upper left-hand corner of the manuscript. Research & Documentation : Include at least two additional sources beyond the sources cited in Essay #4. Your essay must include formal references to all sources. Be sure to provide in-text citations using a standard scholarly style, such as MLA or APA. And, of course, you must also provide appropriate documentation for any other sources you cite. File format : Please submit your essay as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file. These formats are available in most word processors, including Google Docs and Open Office, and will ensure that your instructor is able to comment on your work. Works Cited/References : Your essay should include an appropriate bibliography, with an entry for each individual source you reference in the body of the essay. Titles : Include a descriptive title at the beginning of your essay that tips your readers off to your thesis. Do not format your title with quotation marks, boldface, underlining or italics. Quotation marks or underlining are only appropriate if the title borrows words from another source. Cover pages : Please do not format your essay to include a cover page. Deadline : Submit your final draft essay no later than Midnight CST on Sunday, November 29 at the end of this unit.

Examine the quality of Oedipus’ courage in the play: how is the quality present from the beginning; How does it become even stronger towards the climax of the play and at the end? When is he the most courageous? Do you admire Oedipus? Why do you? Why do you think the Greeks would admire him?

Genre Project This project invites to you to apply what you’ve learned about the features of genre in a two-pronged project. Your goal for this assignment will be to identify a genre in your field of study or some other field of interest, to study that genre and learn its features, and then to create a piece of your own that adheres to the conventions of that genre.  Your first step will be to learn about the genres of writing in a field of interest to you. This area of interest might be your direction of academic study, but it might alternatively be a field/community that you are a part of outside of your academic life. For example, I am part of a community of people who love to cook. There are a number of genres of writing in that field: Online food blogs, recipes, cookbooks, cookbook reviews, history of food articles, feature articles on food culture, etc. If I were selecting from this list, I would choose cookbook reviews because this is something that I’ve always thought about doing more of. Plus…this sort of writing might also apply to the type of writing I need to do for work (reviewing student papers!). I could also choose a genre from my academic field: writing studies. There are many genres in my field of study, but here are a few: research articles, instructional notes, conference presentation talks, theoretical analysis, academic analysis essays, book reviews, review of research, etc. If I were writing an academic piece, I might choose an instructional note. This is because it would allow me to do some research, but it is a piece that doesn’t require active research to be completed (I don’t have to set up a research project and conduct it over the course of a month??). My choice here is definitely shaped by the constraints of the time frame of this assignment. While I could conduct a month-long research project and present my findings in a documented 20 page research paper…I do NOT have time for that in the confines of the last 4 weeks of our class!  These two examples should illustrate that you are going to be thinking about a few different things when you choose your genre: personal interests, academic interests (what do you want to learn more about?), your needs as a developing writer, and the constraints of this course and the timeframe of this essay. You will have three weeks to complete this project, so keep that in mind as you select your genre. But also think about what type of writing will be useful to you in the future…is there a type of writing you want to do or anticipate that you will need to do more of in the future?  I’ve provided a sample list of areas of interest and associated genres or types of writing, but your area of interest may not be on my list, so plan to do some research. In addition, some of the types of writing I menton here may be too broad and may require specifying a more specific genre than is listed. To help you with this process, you could talk to a professor in your field, conduct research in one of the field-specific library databases to see what sort of pieces are out there, or if you have already done some writing in your field, you might already have an idea of what your options are. Once you select a genre, you’ll be able to begin the first part of the project. If you’re not sure about your genre, please email or text me. I am happy to help!  Bibliography The first part of your project will be to develop a bibliography of examples of writing that exhibits the genre you are studying. For example, if your genre is democratic political commentary, you will be looking for examples of published materials in this genre. You might be looking for materials published by the major news networks as well as commentary pieces that might show up in library databases. If your genre is literary book reviews, you might be looking in publications like The New York Book Review, the New York Times Book Review section, Los Angeles Review of Books, Harper’s Monthly, or other publications that include literary reviews. It is up to you to know or learn where to find pieces in the genre you’ve selected.  As you collect sources, you’ll put together a bibliography of examples of the genre. This is simply a list of sources in MLA format. If you find it useful, you can include annotations of those sources that explain what features of the genre are most prominent in each piece.  Genre Analysis Presentation You’ve done a genre analysis before! As early as week 1 of our class, you got your feet wet in this type of work, so it should be somewhat familiar to you now. The second component of this project is to conduct a comprehensive genre analysis will be more comprehensive that covers all 6 of the primary features of genre that we’ve been looking at this semester: context, content, audience, purpose, style, organization. Create a genre analysis for your chosen genre in presentation format, and present your analysis to your fellow classmates on the discussion board on D2L. Your presentation must be presented electronically. You can use a presentation software like PowerPoint, KeyNote, or Prezi…or you can create a video or a brochure for your classmates. What do you think they would find most useful?  You will create a first draft of your presentation for the instructor to review. After that feedback, you’ll have a chance to revise before going live in the presentation forum.  Tip: As you create your presentation, keep in mind that the online presentation is a genre in itself! Review tips for powerpoint presentations delivered in an online environment for ideas about how to design your slides, how to deliver them in a way that is meaningful to other participants in the forum, etc.  As one might anytime they are exploring a new genre, think about what expectations and needs your fellow students have. The goal of the presentation is to help your classmates to learn about a genre they are unfamiliar with. What would be a convenient way to get that information? What format would they find most useful? Answer this question thoughtfully to guide your choice of presentation format and content.  There is no specific required length for your presentation, but again…think about your audience and the genre of the online presentation. How long of a presentation would YOU like to see? Generally speaking, if you’re creating a video presentation, I would recommend 5 minutes or fewer. Aim for a balance between providing all the information necessary and maintaining the interest/attention of your audience.
