in her Introduction Prof. Bondanella makes two very bold and striking statements about education during this time period: “The Renaissance was in the best sense a vast educational process, and Italy was the teacher of Europe.” She goes on to say that: “The revival of classical learning was in many ways key to the Italian Renaissance.” Using direct quotes (plus page numbers in parentheses) discuss the main points developed in her argument. How does she describe “humanism” and what was its value to Renaissance society? Looking Closely at Genre Genre cannot be reduced to individual parts or units of meaning. And yet, the way that genre operates in general is tied to the look and feeling of a film’s cinematography, acting style, lines of dialogue, lighting, and sound. So in this exercise the goal is to break a scene down into its most basic elements and then write about how those elements operate in the service of the larger purpose of the social problem film.  Step One:  Select which of the two films you want to work with?The Bigamist or White Dog?. Watch the film and consider a few possible good candidates for analysis. The questions that you are using to associate the film’s components to the genre are generated on Tuesday through the readings. So pay close attention there and try to make those connections happen in the margins of the annotation due on Tuesday. Pick a scene or sequence. A full scene might turn out to be too long and if that’s the case, break off a segment of the scene to focus in on. Step Two: You’ll want to do a basic shot breakdown using notation of your own. Here’s what the format of such notation usually looks like, but you can create your own in your notebook, as a word or sheets document, or whatever works for you to get the pieces laid out. You don’t upload this or show it to us. But you actually may find that pieces of it are helpful as an illustration, too. It’s a choice you’ll make, but know that we won’t ask to see it as evidence of this assignment. This version comes from FILM 20A: Step Three: Now turn to your blank page and begin to write. Write like elementary method A response essay with summary asks the writer to read rhetorically and respond to ideas presented within a text. As a college student, you’ll often be asked to write papers in response to readings. Professors assign response papers because they allow you to demonstrate your ability to read complex texts carefully, understand what they mean, and think critically about them. Response papers invite you to do more than just memorize key course concepts for a test. They invite you to begin taking your place in the college community by “entering a conversation” about those concepts. For this assignment, you will consider ideas presented in a text, write a focused summary of those ideas, craft a thesis statement outlining your response to an idea presented in the text and then support that response with evidence from the text. CW1 ESSAY QUESTIONS 1. Psychoanalysis is a common methodology applied to the analysis of horror and science fiction texts, especially when examining the maternal female body. Discuss the creation of the ‘monstrous feminine’ in a film of your choice (do not use Ridley Scott’s Alien), and what this representation of monstrosity conveys about gender relations, patriarchal society, and the creation of the abject.  2. What is Afrofuturism and why is it considered to be a current popular trend in contemporary Science Fiction? How does Afrofuturism engage with issues of Blackness within the conventions of the genre? Discuss in relation to at least two films.  3. “1950s alien invasion films played on fears of the time to create strong feelings of paranoia, with the ultimate goal of creating conformity in its audience.” Discuss this statement in relation to a 1950s alien invasion film and one made after 2000. Are alien invasion narratives inherently conservative texts? 4. “Dystopias generally project into the future the fears of the present”. Discuss this statement in relation to two films: one set in a dystopian city, the other set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.  5. The robot on film is a body that looks human, but does not register affect. Ironically, these robot bodies often evoke strong feelings of fear and anxiety, or, conversely, feelings of attachment, sympathy and even sexual attraction in humans on screen and in the audience. Examine this phenomenon in relation to at least two films of your choice.  6. The sight of the zombie body always creates strong visceral responses – of fear, disgust, and occasionally of laughter. Examine the image of the zombie body – which has changed over time from an embodiment of colonial oppression, to a viral contagion, and more recently a sympathetic protagonist – and the strong affects that it evokes.  7. The figure of the vampire in horror cinema is one which embodies fluid notions of gender and sexuality. How do images of the vampire seduce and affect the viewer through the form of cinema itself?  8. In eco-horror films “the revolts of nature are extreme but understandable payback for the irrevocable damage that humanity has inflicted upon the natural world.” Examine how the ‘revenge of nature’ is expressed through non-human forms in two eco-horror films of your choice, and how/why this revenge is presented as righteous and justified. 9. Found footage films are a form of “post-cinema”, as described by Steven Shaviro, in that their form expresses what it feels like to live in a digitised world. Discuss this in relation to two found footage films.

This essay asks that you understand the genre of Dystopic/Utopic fiction. You should quote the novel in your analysis. Many of the books in American Literature have looked at the idea of the world as either a utopia or dystopia. Octavia Butler’s work, in particular, explores the notion of a future, apocalyptic world plagued by our nation’s past choices.  Discuss Butler’s vision of America and state what you believe is her message to the younger generation.  What does it mean to vision a world that is ‘upside down”?  You might want to consider the work of Mikhal Bakhtin and his notions of the Carnivalesque or Grotesque in your answer.Your paper should be four pages.
