Read the scenario and instructions below and address all the checklist items in the form of a letter to the manufacturer (part 1) and an email to the distributor (part 2). Part 1) Write a minimum 350-word business letter to the Brechenstruct Manufacturing Co. in your choice of Germany or Ireland, where your friend Hanz works, to complain about the defects in the new folding desk you bought for $1,400. It is a handmade oak desk that literally folds up into a box. It does not close properly and there are defects in the wood itself. You can create your own details as long as they are plausible. Include an in-text citation (in APA’s most current edition format and citation style) from an article of your choice regarding customer service. Include a separate page for the accompanying reference. Part 2) Write a business 500-word email to the distributor, Expressfly International, based in Cadiz, Spain. They sent the product to another person’s address initially and then could not find your package. Two weeks later when it arrived, there were extra charges added on to the bill and due upon receipt. You paid these because you had to in order to be able to get your product. Your letter should be submitted in a Word document and be a minimum of 350 words in length (with an additional reference page) and an additional 2 pages for the 500-word email to the distributor. Checklist: Address the audience (the German or Irish manufacturer for the letter; the Spanish distributor for the email) in an appropriate manner. Provide an explanation of the problem(s). Use the appropriate tone, style, and choice of words based on cultural considerations. Explain what your expectations of the audience are as a result of the letter and email. Provide an appropriate closing to the letter and to the email. Use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Use APA’s most current edition for the format and citation style, and include an additional reference page to accompany the letter that includes a customer service article and a viable source of support for your cultural considerations addressed.

You will also be discussing various articles read in this unit including Bartholomae’s “Inventing the University” and make connections to your past expectations of academic writing. You will reflect on the academic expectations that you have experienced throughout your writing journey. In this essay, you will introduce yourself as a writer and tell me about your history with writing. Describe in detail various courses you have taken that included writing, topics that you covered in those courses, and what types of writing/assignments you have done in those courses. While much of your writing was probably done in English classes, do not limit yourself to just English classes; discuss other courses that involved writing too. Give me a thorough overview of your past with writing; this gives me context for your writing experience. Additionally, you must also discuss academic writing expectations according to the readings we have done in this unit. You must integrate all 3 readings from this unit; Irvin’s “What is Academic Writing?”, Zimmerman’s “Becoming a Self-Regulated Learner”, and Bartholomae’s “Inventing the University”. When integrating these texts discuss the academic expectations of members of the university based on the texts; be sure to include specific references and examples from all of the readings you are integrating. For example, if you mention a concept from “Inventing the University” consider finding a direct quote from the text to help support your discussion; this should be done for all 3 texts. Finally, you will work to connect your own experience to the discussion on academic writing expectations. Discuss how your past experience demonstrates the academic writing expectations from the readings you selected. For example, if a reading mentioned a strategy, learning method, skill, etc. that you have utilized or demonstrated in a past course you should discuss the example in detail. Also point to areas where you could have utilized the readings strategies, learning methods, skills, etc. in your past practices and experiences. Ultimately, you should be using these readings as a lens to look at and analyze your academic history for evidence of these academic writing expectations. Audience & Genre You should consider your primary audience as me; think of this as an introduction of yourself as a writer. Your secondary audience should be your classmates, as some of them will read your draft during peer response. The genre in which you should present this writing assignment is an essay. An essay should include an introduction, body paragraphs supporting your focus, and a conclusion (Note: the genre of an essay does not require a 5 paragraph format). Requirements: 4 Pages, double space, 11 pt. Arial Font, 1-inch margins

Consider these questions: What is philosophy? What are the main areas of philosophy? Ask these same questions to 3 to 5 friends or colleagues. Summarize their responses and your own in an essay form. Have your thoughts changed since reading the beginning chapters? How? Why do you think it might be important to learn philosophy? Compare these to your own thoughts and feelings on the matter.

You need to first carefully read and understand what an Annotated Bibliography is and the 3 different parts of it. Please read the OWL at Purdue’s materials on this. You also need to find a suitable (relevant, credible, and trustworthy) article on your topic. Your article should provide some answer(s) to your research question and help you learn more about your topic of interest.  Please have your article’s citation information and notes on the main point of the article to prepare for this activity. The Annotated Bibliography is a bibliography with annotations. It’s a typical academic research assignment. The goal is to gather credible and relevant research sources to answer your research question. The annotated bibliography is often a preliminary assignment before a larger research paper. It helps you organize your research and your thinking about your research. The parts of the Annotated Bibliography are an MLA citation followed by a paragraph for these 3 parts (1) a brief paragraph summary of the information in the article (2) an evaluation on the credibility or trustworthiness of the source (3) a brief paragraph of reflection on how this source answers your research question. The paper must be formatted using APA style in a formal third person. Do not include personal anecdotes or comments/narrative in your paper. The Purdue OWL APA guide is an excellent resource to assist you with APA style. Additional requirements for the paper are:  The Paper must utilize both paraphrases and direct quotes, and not more than half of the citations can be direct quotes.  This will enable you to obtain practice in both in-text citing techniques. If used, only one block quote is allowed. Copying or otherwise use of information from another source without proper citation is not allowed. Parenthetical citations must be used to tell the reader where the information comes from. Violation of this could be considered plagiarism. You must cite a minimum of 6 peer-reviewed articles. This essay should be typed, double-spaced, in a 12-point font, and saved in .doc or .docx format. Use the following naming convention: HIST302_JaneSmith_Essay3.docx. The essay should be 6–7 total pages, including a title page with your name and the class number (HIST 302), a bibliography page, and an endnote page. Be sure to insert your name and a page number at the bottom of each page (for example, Dursteler-1, Dursteler-2). Expectations The books and other course materials you have read will be the basis for your work, and you should be certain to use and cite them in this essay. You will also be expected to do additional research. You must fully cite any sources that you reference in endnotes. Be sure that all the words and ideas in your paper are your own; any form of plagiarism, whether intentional or not, will result in a failing grade for the assignment and possibly for the entire course. Your essay will be graded on the quality of thought, organization, clarity of composition, and your ability to draw broadly on and apply the material you are studying as well as the quality of the additional reading and research you do for each essay. Note that you must complete all three essays in order to pass the class. Essay Topic Write your second essay on this prompt: Machiavelli’s The Prince is one of the great works of Renaissance Italian literature. In it, Machiavelli advises a prince on how he may have to act to preserve his power and to govern effectively. At the heart of his advice to the prince is a particular view of humanity and human nature. In this essay, briefly analyze the leadership principles that Machiavelli presents, primarily in Chapters 15–19, and derive from this a snapshot of his views on human nature. Does Machiavelli believe human nature is good, evil, foolish, or something else? After carefully identifying Machiavelli’s argument and his views on human nature, I would like you to critique his position; do you agree or disagree with Machiavelli, and why?

Media Response Essay: In a 1000 word essay, respond to a piece of media assigned for the class. Make sure to include your own response to the work, as well as situating it in its historical context. What is the piece trying to say or do? How effective is it, and why? How does it fit into the historical period in which it was created? Your essay can ask questions like these.   Artist Research Essay: Research a new media artist and, in a 1000 essay, describe them and their work. Most likely, this will involve choosing a few of their works and analyzing them in the context of the artist. Be sure to also attend to the time period they are working in- no artist works outside of history!   Media Technology Essay: Think of a media technology that interests you. In a 1000 word essay, write a personal reflection on that media technology. More than simply a description of the technology, I’m looking for a deep analysis of how this technology has impacted your life and relation of that to the new media art that we analyze in class. New Media Art Piece: Using a new media technology (we can be very flexible on what this means, but it includes things like Twine, Processing, Photoshop, etc.) create an art piece that takes no more than 3 minutes to experience that comments on, analyzes, or critiques, the medium that you have used to make it. For example, you might create an image using Photoshop that comments on Photoshop as a medium.

For this assignment, you will be asked to summarize the Belfi, Karlan, and Tranel (2018) study. This article is available through Electronic Reserves. Your assignment involves creating a 2-page double-spaced summary of this article that explains the introduction to the study, the methods the researchers used, the results they found, and a summary of the meaning of these findings. Your summary should be written in APA format and include an APA style citation of the journal article on a separate reference page. Spelling and grammatical construction will also be part of your grade. To attain full credit for this assignment, please check out the rubric that is attached. Additionally, check out my attached summary of a recent neuroscience article to help you get a sense of what I am looking for.  Please upload a word document to this folder on Blackboard. **Please note that your assignment will be submitted through SafeAssign. If you use too many words from the original article, you will be penalized. The point of this assignment is to summarize the original articles in your own words. When in doubt, be sure to use a citation!**  1. Read the rubric – I gave very detailed feedback in the rubrics. Please look at them, as I spent a lot of time grading and giving individualized feedback on things that could be improved upon. Additionally, by looking at the rubric, you will see if there are things you did not do in your 1st summary that you should do for the second summary. 2. Read my example summary – Many of you put your own spin on the article summary, which is usually good; however, my example should have shown you exactly how I wanted things to be formatted. It also includes all the relevant points (e.g. hypotheses, methods section, limitations, and future directions). 3. APA format – It appears as though many of you do not understand proper APA citation formation. I took off very few points for this. On the next assignment, I will not be as lenient. Page Numbers – Please be sure your paper has a header with your name, the date, and page numbers. 5. Future Directions – Many of you did not include future directions of study in your discussion section. Please be sure to do this for the next assignment. 6. Grammar/Proofreading – I saw a lot of grammatical errors throughout these assignments (e.g. improper use of semi colons, subject/verb disagreement, using words incorrectly). Some of these things can be caught by proofreading. However, if you have specific questions about grammar, please consult the internet or ask me. 7. Using less quotations – Many of you cited quotations directly from the article. While that is usually acceptable, the point of this assignment is to summarize the article in your own words. If you use direct quotes from the original article, it’s hard for me to know whether you understand what the author is saying. Please limit your use of direct quotes. 8. No opinions/I statements – This is considered to be a “formal” writing assignment. As such, you should not insert any of your own opinions or include any “I” statements. Please consult my example if you are confused about this. If there is something you believe should be addressed in future studies, that is not written about in the article, you could say, “Future work might examine the role of the mPFC in music with lyrics versus instrumental music to better understand the role of this brain area and its association with music.”
