DelaneyUnit 2: What Do We Mean When We Talk About “Anxiety”? upd. 10/6According to a national survey published in February 2019 by the Pew Research Center, anxiety and depression rank as one of the top concerns for US teenagers. Numerous reports—including this one from Pew—assert that anxiety was on the rise among college students prior to the pandemic, and we know that our current situation has only exacerbated this state. But what do we mean by “anxiety”? What feelings and experiences are encompassed by this term? What does it mean to identify as a person with anxiety? We’ll draw on ideas from disability studies and intersectionality in our conversations. The Unit will conclude with a formal analytical argument of 1200-1500 words worth 20 percent of the overall course grade.What Do You Mean By “A Formal Analytical Argument”?We often use the word “argument” to mean the exchange of strong opinions, and when writing for school, it generally refers to a persuasive essay—one that has a clear thesis statement and relevant supporting evidence. In Unit 1, I pushed you to step away from that thesis-support (e.g., five-paragraph essay) style of writing in order to more fully explore and explain your thinking. The analytical argument I’m asking you to write for Unit 2 will combine these modes to create a richer, more complex essay.What Do You Mean By “Analysis”?In their textbook Writing Analytically David Rosenwasser and Jill Stephen offer this four-part definition of analysis, which is worth quoting at length:1. Analysis seeks to discover what something means. An analytical argument makes claims for how something might be best understood and in what context.2. Analysis deliberately delays evaluation and judgment.3. Analysis begins in and values uncertainty rather than starting from settled convictions.4. Analytical arguments are usually pluralistic; they tend to try on more than one way of thinking abouthow something might be best understood. (Rosenwasser and Stephen 6-7)Analysis, then, starts with inquiry: questions followed by careful observation. To delay evaluation and judgment requires that we acknowledge and bracket our gut reactions—we must stay with the problem longer, seeing it from every possible perspective, considering what may seem counterintuitive. Only then can we arrive at a reasoned, thoughtful conclusion.Who’s Our Audience For This Essay?Beyond the obvious answer—me, your professor—your imagined audience for this essay is the journal Inquiries, which describes itself as “an open-access academic journal that highlights the work of students at the undergraduate level and above.” Consider this assignment an opportunity to prepare a scholarly essay for possible submission to this journal. As part of our activities, we’ll look more closely at the journal’s website and its expectations.What Kind Of Research Will We Have To Do?Your analysis will focus on one specific conversation about anxiety. That conversation may have taken place in a more traditional magazine or newspaper, on social media, on a cable news show, or elsewhere. It needs to be a conversation that you can capture and study in detail. As with your first essay, you may find it necessary to narrow your focus to make your analysis more manageable.How Should I Cite My Sources?You’ll need to use formal MLA citation style for this essay. Standard MLA style format Minimum 1200 words, plus works cited page. Works Cited page must be included for a passing grade Besides the literary work(s), at least 2 academic sources researched by student. DO NOT use the following sources: Wikipedia, Sparknotes, Shmoop, GradeSaver, CliffNotes, eNotes, etc. Instead, use the PBSC Library Databases to research scholarly sources and literary criticisms.  Assignment The term paper involves research on literary one of the literary works that was presented, discussed and/or analyzed throughout the semester. Preferably, students will write their term paper on the literary work presented to the class, but they may choose not to with instructor approval. The introductory paragraph should briefly introduce the author, title and brief summary of the literary work and end with a well-formulated thesis that reflects the body paragraph organization. The thesis should summarize the main ideas presented in the topic sentences of the body paragraphs, ending impact of the literary work on culture and society in general.   Body paragraphs (4) should have an explicit topic sentence that presents part of the argument from the thesis. You also must integrate evidence in the form of quote, paraphrase, or summary from the work(s) and from at least one of your outside sources to assist in analyzing and supporting your topic sentence. Last, it should include an analytical discussion explaining how the evidence supports your thesis. Note that the suggested organization reflects the content and organization of the presentation guidelines. BP1 – Author (brief–very brief–biography) if any.   History of the work, when was it written, published, type of publication, who   was targeted audience. Type of literature, genre, etc. Original language?   Medium? Be sure to cite sources. BP2 -Who or what influenced the author/work? Describe  historical, social, political, philosophical, biographical influences. What   is the main theme? Subthemes? Be sure to cite sources. BP3 – Identify the protagonist and antagonist. Describe   the conflict and resolution. Summarize and paraphrase at least two literary criticism perspectives that analyze the work. Be sure to cite sources. BP4 – Who or what has the piece of literature influenced?   Is the work and/or its themes, characters, any passages still influential today? Explain how? The conclusion should NOT simply repeat the thesis, but it should also NOT continue to argue and present more evidence. Instead, it should bring the reader full circle on the importance of your analysis of the work(s) and the points you have argued in the body paragraphs.

Instructions for Paper 3 Here are the instructions for Paper 3. 1. Read chapter 6 in Gardner very carefully. (One of the sample poems in chapter 6 is by T. S. Eliot. It’s a great poem, but it’s long and complicated. Please don’t choose it for your paper.) 2. Throughout The Gardner text, there are many poems including those on pages 10, 19, 61, 64, 68, 73, and 105. Read all of these poems. In addition I have attached 3 poems to this email. Please read them carefully as they are all suitable for you to write about. I particularly recommend Mother to Son. 3. Paper 3 is in 2 parts. For Part 1, choose 5 poems from the text and the attachments. In 3 or 4 sentences for each poem state why the poem is suitable to teach to a first year college class.
