Discuss the use of musical form in the compositional process in the classical period. Include examples of specific forms, what they consist of, and representative composers and compositions that reflect these forms. Pages 10-12 in the assigned reading for this module cover musical form in the period. This assignment should be a minimum of 250 words in length and your thoughts and opinions. This assignment is submitted via Turnitin and will be checked for plagiarized sources and against a database of previously submitted assignments and internet sources. At the end of your submission you need to include a works cited page that includes all of your referenced sources including all embedded materials in Canvas in MPA, APA or Turabian/Chicago formats.

“Jazz is experiencing a resurgence as of late. The BBC ran a report recently that adults in their early 30’s, in Britain, report their favorite genre of music to now include jazz. There are more music schools that offer jazz education than during jazz’s heyday. Why do you think jazz has become so relevant today, especially for young people? Keep in mind everything we have learned and think about the world today before you answer.”

For the music paper you must create 500 to 600 words of written text. You need to select a program on Youtube to watch. As a first step read an article about the type of music or dance you have chosen to watch. So if you pick Salsa for instance search the article for information about the instruments used, the choreography presented, the types of rhythm and sounds that are presented, the kinds of lyrics that are developed. Then pick a Youtube program that presents a major artist or artists doing a performance. Since this is part of the international education component of the course you may not use American musicians or American based compositions i.e. no Japanese rock and roll for instance. Select a style of music that originated abroad i.e. classical music and composers that worked in Europe, opera created by European artists, Latin American music such as the lambada, the macarena, the salsa, the tango and the list goes on, traditional forms of Asian music such as Japanese music or Chinese music, or forms of African tribal music. As you watch the presentation select two of the songs that are performed. Tell me who created them, what the songs symbolize, what kinds of lyrics and instruments are used, what the songs sound like i.e. rhythm, tempo , pitch etc. Some of these types of music are closely associated with dance or ballet. So if the music includes elements of either of those, briefly describe their impact on the production.Also briefly describe your aesthetic response to each piece of music. Whatever you watch electronically cite the program using MLA style.

By clicking on the double arrow that reveals next to each genre label you can explore that category in depth. The sheer number of genre’s makes its own point about the bewildering and often tribal isolation embedded in our traditional approach to genre. After spending some time pick four different genres from the web site and rank them from most attractive to least attractive. By “attractive” I mean only how much you want to hear it again. In your response to this post please do the following: 1) Provide your genre list in ranked order. I will assume that the sample piece represents your choice unless you specify otherwise. In other words, when you dig into each genre you will get multiple examples. 2) Discuss briefly what you were responding to in your ranking. 3) Present an analysis of your top and bottom choices (2 total) in terms of “Arousal, Valence, and Depth,” per the article, “Music Genres Re-Sorted into 3 Clusters Linked to Personality.” When you respond to your classmate, be sure to listen to their list before you respond. Compare your response to the music of your classmate’s list with their own characterization. For my bottom choice, Tropical House, the arousal is very high with an upbeat, party-like aura. Its fast, electronic beat plays throughout the song while trying to induce positive, happy feelings. However, I feel that there is less valence to the artist’s lyrics and melodies. Many of the songs I heard in this genre were very generic and embody the conventions used in songs frequently played on the radio. The songs didn’t give me much room for interpretation, as the melodies and lyrics were direct and simple. Although, I can still see how this genre can appeal to people through the catchiness of the rhythm and flow.

This listening assignment consists of listening to radio stations KCSM and KDFC. You can download the apps for each station or stream them, listen on your home radio if you have one, or use your car radio. The important thing is that you listen in segments of two hours, for KCSM and for KDFC. Write a double spaced 8-page response detailing the time you listened, the names of the pieces you heard and the names of the performers. Your commentary about what you hear is how you will earn the points. Start by giving your personal impressions, “Did you like what you heard? Did you recognize any of the melodies or instruments?” This listening assignment will be 8 total pages, double spaced. Four pages for the classical station and four for the jazz station.

The three-page concert paper will be based on attendance at a live concert. (No rock, pop or rap, please. If you are unsure of the suitability of the concert, please run it by me.) Due dates are listed in the syllabus section. For this assignment, try to think like you are writing a critique for the next days New York Times. You should discuss what you heard and saw at the concert such as the pieces heard, music background, the instruments used, how the pieces struck you emotionally, the audience reaction, or anything else that was an important part of the experience. Proper use of musical terms and spelling count. Please include any sources for background information used. (Citations in whatever format you choose. Just be consistent.) Also, remember to include when and where you attended this event. I will have a discussion forum where upcoming concerts can be posted by students.
