Assignment Instructions CAUTION: It is critical that you read all of the instructions below (word for word); the week five lessons; and the MLA Review and Sample Essay 2 (under Resources) before submitting this essay. If you do not follow ALL of the instructions, your essay will be returned to you for revisions or awarded a grade of zero. You don’t have to be perfect, but do read carefully and try your best. This week, you will write your second essay. Topic choices are described in this week’s Lessons (i.e., see the song lyrics provided). Use the three-part thesis and five-paragraph essay format you learned during week two. Write in third person only. (See the Grammar Review under Resources for help with third person.) Please do not make reference to Billy Joel or the song itself. Just discuss the topic you chose. For your essay title, use whatever topic you chose, like Children of Thalidomide. (Three-part thesis example from our topic choices: Though Woodstock is one of the most widely known music festivals of all time, many are unaware of the problems the event posed regarding finding a location, caring for such a large crowd, and cleaning up after the event.) You must incorporate research exclusively from the APUS library into your essay. Use two or three sources—no more, no less. Remember that your essay should be mostly your own writing (~80%) and approximately 20% source material. This is short essay, so use short quotes only. I suggest only a line or two of quoted material in each of your body paragraphs. Don’t forget your Works Cited page. Include the APUS library URL (https) after each Works Cited entry so that I can click on it and double-check your article. You can just copy and paste it from your web browser. Extensive MLA help is provided under week four (Lessons and Resources). Please do not let anyone else write or revise your writing. My job is to help you improve YOUR writing. I can only do that if you let me see your mistakes. I am not interested in how well someone else writes. I want to help YOU! (Hint: if you are struggling, there are tutoring opportunities listed on our Syllabus. This is an appropriate route for acquiring help with your writing. You may contact me for help anytime too!) Download the template and save it as your last name and Essay 2. (Example: Smith_Essay2). The MLA formatting is done for you (e.g., Times New Roman size 12, double-spaced, header, etc.). Update your name, your professor’s name, and date. Don’t forget to put your last name in the header. (Let me know if you don’t know how to get into the header section or type a question into your Word help section.) Your essay should be between 500 and 750 words. Please do not go under the word count at all. Do not go over the word count by more than 50 words. Following instructions is an important part of any writing assignment, and often you will be asked to adhere to word count guidelines, so this is good practice! Be sure that all paragraphs are well developed. I suggest 5-8 sentences per paragraph and no less than 100 words per paragraph, including your introduction and conclusion. (Points saver: as you proof your essay in Word, hit the control [ctrl] key and the “F” key at the same time. This will bring up the search feature. Type in what you wish to find, such as the word you, to be sure you have avoided second person. This works in finding contractions too. Type in an apostrophe and hit enter!) When you “submit” your paper, it will be uploaded into Turnitin (a plagiarism-detection website) automatically. You do not have to create a Turnitin account yourself. Both you and your instructor will receive the results. (The Turnitin report will be under Assignments and will have a percentage on it, like 22%. Click on the percentage to view your report. Certain parts of your essay will be highlighted. This shows where you have used information from a library source or material that appears in another student’s essay.) LESSON Class, Last week you had a mountain of information to read, so for this lesson, I am going to give you a little break and do something fun. This week we will write an informative essay, which is sometimes called an expository essay. You will pick a topic (described below), research your topic, and educate your reader about it. This essay will not be argumentative and should not include your personal opinions. There are many other types of essays as well (just FYI). Culture Interaction Essay: This assignment requires that you have an intercultural interaction with someone from a culture different than your own, read about that different culture in depth, reflect upon it and write about it. Once you have identified the “friend” you will be interacting with for this assignment, read up about their culture and history ahead of time. Formulate some questions you want to ask them about their culture and experience. Spend 2-3 “contact hours” with the person or group from a culture different from your own. Talk to them or interview them about their culture. Observe their interactions (if spending time with a family or group). The purpose of this assignment is to help you learn about a cultural system that is different from yours through reading and through interactions with members of that cultural group. Write a 3-4 page reflective paper about the intercultural experience in which you have participated. The paper must also include a title page and reference page. Many people feel that there is room for improvement in the area of campaign finance spending. What is the current status of campaign finance reform? Discussion 2: Ethical Questions Although students of social work have not yet satisfied the criteria to earn the title of “social worker,” they are bound by the same ethical requirements as titled social workers. Social workers regularly face ethical issues of varying magnitude, and social work students may as well. Some issues seem obvious, while others may emerge in subtle ways. For this Discussion, select one of the following scenarios. Consider the dilemma described, and imagine how you might feel if you found yourself in a similar situation. Think about the ethical obligations you would have as a social worker or social work student. Write a description of the steps you would take to address the situation in an ethical manner. Justify your response with evidence from the Learning Resources. Scenario 1 You are a social worker in a public health department providing services to pregnant women. As part of your duties, you provide parenting education, support, and connection to community resources, and you follow up with the families and their newborns for six months after birth. Ms. C has been a client of yours during two pregnancies in the last three years. She has a 15 year-old, a nine year-old, a three year-old, and a newborn. On this day, you are making a routine visit to Ms. C, who lives in an older mobile home in a rural area of the county. You take with you a newly hired social worker who is in training. When you arrive at the house, you find that it is clean and the two older girls are busy doing their homework. The three year-old is playing, and Ms. C is feeding the baby. During the visit, the new social worker asks Ms. C whether she is looking for work. When you discreetly ask her about birth control, the social worker remarks, motioning to the 15 year-old daughter, “You better get her on birth control if you do not want more babies around here.” Ms. C does not respond to the other social worker, instead maintaining her focus on you. You can tell that she is bothered by the remark about her daughter. Scenario 2 You are at lunch with some of your social work colleagues at a mental health center. While you are eating lunch, one of your colleagues says, “So, none of you can beat my morning. I had a borderline in my office who was definitely off her meds. She kept jumping out of the chair and spinning around the room and she was talking really fast about having a baby and being pregnant. I did not even try to deal with her. I called the Access Team and it took them half an hour to get to my office. The whole time I am watching her spin around, and I cannot help but laugh. They took her for an evaluation, but that was the craziest woman.”

Week 1 – Assignment: Analyze the Effectiveness of Organizational Mission Statements   Previous   Next   Instructions This week, your assignment is to research and analyze the mission statements of two organizations you admire. These organizations do not have to be for-profit business organizations, though at least one of your choices should be such a commercial business. Non-profits and public service organizations such as schools also often have mission statements. When selecting mission statements, consider whether those statements consider diversity in its many forms to adapt to modern business environments. Here is an example of a publicly posted mission statement of an organization you are probably now familiar with: Northcentral University educates professionals throughout the world and provides an accessible opportunity to earn a U.S. regionally accredited degree. Northcentral mentors students one-to-one with highly credentialed faculty via advanced delivery modalities. Northcentral commits to helping students achieve academically and become valuable contributors to their communities and within their professions. You’re a living part of this mission at this very moment. What do you think? Please do not use this mission statement in your paper to complete this assignment. Find some other firm’s mission statement that you admire. For this week’s assignment, complete the following: Conduct an Internet search to find the publicly posted mission statements of two organizations you admire. This may take some effort and trial and error because some organizations do not have an explicit mission statement or at least do not post it online. Also, as was previously mentioned, some organizations use other terms such as vision or simple purpose to communicate this message. Make your own assessment of whether what an organization states, no matter what they call it, fits the definitions of a mission statement as discussed this week. Because finding a particular firm’s mission statement might be challenging, be sure to start with a list of at least 5 to 10 firms you admire to find the two you need for this assignment. Prepare a written report that contains the following in this specific order: Clearly introduce the purpose of your report, and then explain how you will structure ideas throughout your paper. Discuss the meaning of the term mission statement using this week’s resources. Based on what the mission statements communicate to you, explore their effectiveness in supporting diverse workforces working in different environments. Be sure to document the mission statement of each selected organization. Investigate whether each mission statement is effective in allowing the organization to adapt and evolve in today’s diverse and ever-changing society and business environment. If society or their business environments change, will their mission statement help or hinder their ability to adapt to those changes? What would you do as a manager leading a team of employees in that organization? Would the statement be effective in helping you make decisions? Why or why not? What changes might you suggest the firms make to their mission statements? Provide a conclusion to your paper with brief concluding remarks about the results of your analysis.
