In this paper, you will reflect on what we have learned so far in the course. You have the choice of responding to one of two themes: (a) Why do we have poverty in the United States? Discuss the links between our politics and poverty. How do the features of our democracy contribute to the divide between rich and poor? (b) Slavery ended over 150 years ago, but in many ways the effects of slavery are still felt in the today. How do public policies affect racial inequalities in the United States? In what ways do our political institutions reinforce economic and social divisions between black Americans and white Americans?    You will be graded, in part, on your ability to use evidence (from class materials), the strength of your analysis and argument, your ability to organize your argument in a coherent way, and your ability to properly cite sources and format the paper. (You can choose whatever style you like, but please be consistent and use in text citations). You should also include a works cited page that lists the sources you used. You can use in class sources exclusively if you like, but you are free to use external sources as well, although you are not required to do so. The paper should be double-spaced, with pages numbered, it should have a title, and it should be at least five pages in length, not counting the works cited page.

Assessment Question: You have just joined a new business managing the employee relations for a large publishing company. Your MD has just asked you to write a short report on some of the international considerations you need to consider as well as the role of diverse groups and parties in the relationship too – namely what their role is and how they help to control and manage the employment relationship.

In these reports—often referred to as response or reaction papers—your instructor will most likely expect you to do two things: summarize the material and detail your reaction to it. The following pages explain both parts of a report.PART 1: A SUMMARY OF THE WORK To develop the first part of a report, do the following:• Identify the author and title of the work and include in parentheses the publisher and publication date. For magazines, give the date of publication.• Write an informative summary of the material. • Condense the content of the work by highlighting its main points and key supportingpoints. • Use direct quotations from the work to illustrate important ideas. • Summarize the material so that the reader gets a general sense of all key aspects of theoriginal work. • Do not discuss in great detail any single aspect of the work, and do not neglect to mentionother equally important points. • Also, keep the summary objective and factual. Do not include in the first part of the paperyour personal reaction to the work; your subjective impression will form the basis of the second part of your paper.PART 2: YOUR REACTION TO THE WORK To develop the second part of a report, do the following:• Focus on any or all of the following questions. Check with your instructor to see if s/he wants you to emphasize specific points. ? How is the assigned work related to ideas and concerns discussed in the course forwhich you are preparing the paper? For example, what points made in the course textbook, class discussions, or lectures are treated more fully in the work?? How is the work related to problems in our present-day world?? How is the material related to your life, experiences, feelings and ideas? For instance, what emotions did the work arouse in you?? Did the work increase your understanding of a particular issue? Rockowitz Writing Center, Hunter College, City University of New York• Evaluate the merit of the work: the importance of its points, its accuracy, completeness, organization, and so on.• You should also indicate here whether or not you would recommend the work to others, and why.POINTS OF CONSIDERATION WHEN WRITING THE REPORT Here are some important elements to consider as you prepare a report:• Apply the four basic standards of effective writing (unity, support, coherence, and clear, error-free sentences) when writing the report.• Make sure each major paragraph presents and then develops a single main point. For example, in the sample report that follows, the first paragraph summarizes the book, and the three paragraphs that follow detail three separate reactions of the student writer to the book. The student then closes the report with a short concluding paragraph.• Support any general points you make or attitudes you express with specific reasons and details. Statements such as “I agree with many ideas in this article” or “I found the book very interesting” are meaningless without specific evidence that shows why you feel as you do. Look at the sample report closely to see how the main point or topic sentence of each paragraph is developed by specific supporting evidence.• Organize your material. Follow the basic plan of organization explained above: a summary of one or more paragraphs, a reaction of two or more paragraphs, and a conclusion. Also, use transitions to make the relationships among ideas in the paper clear.• Edit the paper carefully for errors in grammar, mechanics, punctuation, word use, and spelling.• Cite paraphrased or quoted material from the book or article you are writing about, or from any other works, by using the appropriate documentation style. If you are unsure what documentation style is required or recommended, ask you instructor.• You may use quotations in the summary and reaction parts of the paper, but do not rely on them too much. Use them only to emphasize key ideas.• Publishing information can be incorporated parenthetically or at the bottom of the page in a footnote. Consult with your instructor to determine what publishing information is necessary and where it should be placed.

Qualitative data are helpful to generate a hypothesis and gather information if little is known about an expected association. Focus groups, key informant interviews, and case studies are types of qualitative data collection methods used to identify common themes from which to build a hypothesis. Quantitative data collection and analysis are used to test a hypothesis and make comparisons to determine the direction and strength of a potential association. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is cross-sectional panel survey used to collect quantitative data on adult behaviors and risk factors. It is one of the largest U.S. health data collection efforts. The data can be used to analyze associations on a state or country level.For this assignment, use the “BRFSS Web-Enabled Analysis Tool” and the “Calculation Odds Ratio” worksheet. Refer to the “Odds Ratio Interpretation” document for assistance as needed.You are required to cite to a minimum of two sources to complete this assignment. After covering enough ground on U.S. and California institutions and policy-making processes in comparison with other governments in the world, you will write a 2000 word policy brief. This policy piece will be addressed to local, state, or federal level of the U.S. government. Alternatively, it could be written to be submitted to an inter-governmental organization (IGO) or national/transnational non-governmental organization (NGO). For the policy brief you will pick a policy area on local, state, federal, or international level, e.g., immigration, healthcare, education, foreign policy, or environment, in order to outline and propose a certain policy. More information on this assignment will be provided through the paper guidelines sheet.

The ability to analyze and interpret texts is an essential skill in the study of political theory. The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to develop that skill by preparing a short, carefully-crafted essay on the similarities and contrasts between Plato and Aristotle on several topics. These papers are to be exegetical or interpretive, which means that the task is not to evaluate the validity of what the authors are saying, but rather to explain what they are saying—and why—in the passages under discussion. In so doing, you will be defending a certain interpretation of the texts at hand.This is not meant to be a research paper. You should not consult or cite any sources other than the texts you have been asked to read in this class. Using any language from the internet will be considered a violation of academic integrity, and will be grounds for a failing grade.In constructing your argument, you should restrict yourself to examining the relevant portions of the texts, and clearly pointing to those passages that support your particular reading of the text. In addition, you are called upon to some extent to synthesize the various views under consideration, by contrasting the approaches of the two authors.Answer the following question in an essay of approximately 1250 words:“Compare and contrast Plato and Aristotle’s views on both the best kind of human life, and the best kind of regime or political rule. To what can we attribute the differences in their views on these issues? (Hint: Make sure you discuss the role of teleological thinking within each thinker’s writings, and the differences in their respective approaches to teleology.)In writing this essay, make sure you identify the basic assumptions (regarding human nature, the order of the universe, the role of human beings within this order, human capacities, the nature of political rule, etc.) upon which each thinker bases his claims. How do these assumptions lead to the conclusions about human life that each thinker arrives at? Make sure also that you address the question of what accounts for each thinker’s emphasis on a particular kind of regime, what the alternatives are to their ideal regime, and why those alternatives are considered inadequate. Finally, who is the ideal kind of ruler or statesman for Plato and for Aristotle, and to what extent does each of them believe that the ideal regime can or cannot be achieved? What accounts for the difference in their views?Please note that your essay should not resemble a “laundry-list” of items that simply summarizes all of the ideas above. Rather, the first part of the question (in bold type) is meant to be the central and primary question to be addressed. The rest of the prompt gives you secondary questions, all of which are designed to aid you in making secondary arguments. In a paper that flows well, the secondary arguments will coherently come together to support the central argument of the paper, in response to the central question. In other words, a good answer to the primary question depends not only on constructing good arguments in response to the secondary questions, it requires understanding the correct relationship of all the secondary arguments to one another, and to the primary question. Note, therefore, that you do not need to address the secondary arguments in the order that they appear in the prompt above. It is more important your argument flows logically and well, while making the right connections between all the requisite ideas.
