Many research studies suggest that male brains are different than female brains and that boys learn differently than girls. There even is evidence to suggest that at a young age, girls hear better than boys. This may significantly impact learning, especially when boys and girls are in the same classrooms. In addition to very real (though not always present) brain and learning differences, there are stereotypes about differences in the cognitive ability of boys and girls. And as seen in previous weeks, stereotyping can lead to behavioural differences on the part of both learners and teachers.The preceding issues relate to a topic of importance and debate in education today: the very structure of the educational experience. For example, should boys and girls be segregated in the classroom, acknowledging brain and learning differences? Or, does gender segregation only reinforce the historical stereotypes about the differences in cognitive abilities between males and females? There is significant evidence for both sides of the argument.To prepare for this Discussion:Review Chapter 11 in the course text, Gender: Psychological Perspectives. Focus on the gender-related differences and similarities in issues related to school, education, and careers.Review the research information (use the Research tab) found on the National Association for Single Sex Public Education website. Focus on the information related to use of gender differences from a psychological and biological basis but also look at related societal issues.Review the article, “Science Faculty’s Subtle Gender Biases Favor Male Students.” Consider how being educated in same-sex classrooms might affect the learner in the present, as well as in the future, educationally, psychologically, and socially. Also think about the impact there might be on society as a whole if everyone was educated in same-sex classrooms.With these thoughts in mind:By Day 3Post an argument for or against the use of single-sex classrooms. What are the pros and cons of insisting that the entire family attend the initial consultation? What would you do if you learned that some of the family members refused to engage in therapy stating that the presenting problem, a recent traumatic event, did not negatively impact them?

Ch. 6:  Learning & Behaviorism   Discussion. h. 6:  Learning & Behaviorism (Chapter 6):  This chapter covers the principles of learning and the concepts related to a major psychological theory – Behaviorism.  Discuss the following after you read the chapter and watch the associated film Learning and Behavior (26 min) 1)  In the text, Kalat outlines the assumptions made by behaviorists. Considered together, two of these assumptions clearly challenge the notion of free will (discussed in Ch. 1, free will vs. determinism). Behaviorists assume determinism, that every behavior has a discoverable cause; they also assume that mentalistic explanations are not good explanations for behavioral phenomena. These assumptions question our typical everyday explanations for our behavior: “Because I wanted to…”, “Because I felt it was the thing to do…” These all imply that we freely chose to engage in the behavior. According to the behaviorists, our behavior was molded by our “reinforcement histories”—we have little choice in the matter.How do you feel about the behaviorist assertion that free will is an illusion? What arguments can you make for or against this assertion? How might a behaviorist counter-argue?  Explain your response.2) Learning plays a prominent role in human experience. “It is hypothesized that males will have faster reaction time than females” My research idea is about whether or not age correlates to reaction time. It is hypothesized that as people get older, their reaction time increases, they get slower. You will need to analyze data (I will give you data) and write a lab report (7- 10 pages – this page count does not include the title page or references) in APA style consisting of the following sections: Title Page Abstract Introduction Method Results Discussion References You will write the report as if you were the researcher conducting the experiment. You have some options in your research question for this project. The data you are given includes the gender and age of the participants as well as three columns of results data. A 30 second test showed the colors red and blue. You had to hit the space bar whenever the color red appeared and don’t hit anything when blue appeared. The column “simple” is the response time it took to press the spacebar. In the GNG (go no go) participants respond (“go”) to only one particular stimulus, and withhold responses (“no-go”) to all other stimuli. If you have a particular interest and want to modify the data, you have that choice. Careful attention must be paid to APA style.

This assignment is to write a paper aspect of psychological aging. The paper should be a minimum of three pages of body of the paper. You must include a reference page. The papers are to be written in APA format, and references (minimum of 5) are to be no more than 10 years old.
