Week 1 Assignment Descriptive Statistics Data Analysis [WLOs: 1, 3] [CLOs: 2, 3, 5]  Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 in your course textbook, Chapter 3 in the Jarman e-book, the Week 1 Instructor Guidance, and review the Module 2: Describing Data  video and the Khan Academy video on Interquartile Range (IQR). Also, complete the Week 1 learning activity and Week 1 weekly review. ? This exercise requires the use of a descriptive statistics calculator. You can find this tool in some versions of Excel (as part of the Analysis ToolPak) or you can use one of the many free online descriptive calculators such as the Descriptive Statistics Calculator by Calculator Soup. Your instructor will post an announcement with the data set for your Week 1 assignment. First, use either Excel or the Calculator Soup descriptive statistics calculator to calculate the descriptive statistics for the given data set. This is explained in Chapter 1 of your course text. You should get an output similar to the image in Figure 1.3 from your textbook. This output must contain the following values: mean, standard error, median, mode, standard deviation, sample variance, kurtosis, skewness, range, minimum, maximum, sum, and count. Next, begin writing your paper by reporting your results for each of the values listed above. Include the data set, the output from the analysis, and the answers to the following questions:     •    Evaluate the measures of central tendency. Address the following when completing this component:     •    Which measure of central tendency is most appropriate based on the data type?     •    Are the mean, median, and mode close to the same value? If not, what does this tell you about the numbers in the set?     •    Identify any mode(s) in the data set. Is there a mode at all? Is there more than one mode?     •    Calculate manually the interquartile range and the values of Q1 and Q3. (It is important to calculate this manually because the interquartile range and quartiles output from Calculator Soup might not be accurate.) Address the following when completing this component:     •    Test to see if there are any outliers in the set. If so, which number(s)?     •    Which method from Section 2.4 of the text did you first use to check for outliers?     •    Now try the other method from Section 2.4 of the text. Do you come to the same conclusion about outliers in the data set?     •    Explain which descriptive statistic you think best summarizes this set of numbers and why.     •    Choose three of the descriptive statistics that you feel best represent this data set. Although death is a natural part of the human lifespan, people in Western cultures have become increasingly sheltered from the process of death.  Particularly difficult is knowing how to effectively communicate with someone who has lost someone close to them and are grieving the loss.  In 2016, Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, suddenly and unexpectedly lost her husband due to a heart attack while on vacation.  Based on her personal experience, Sandberg wrote a book about what she found to be effective and ineffective when people around her were trying to console her through her loss.  Fundamentally, most people want to be a positive presence for the person who is grieving.  For this week’s assignment, research five specific ideas that can be helpful in communicating effectively with a grieving person.  List these five concrete ideas and indicate why this would be effective.  The ideas may include examples from your own personal experience as well as those researched from other sources. Use this template to complete the assignment.

Assignment Preparation Be sure that you have completed the media piece in this week and have taken notes on methods that you will use to sample your participants and collect and analyze your data. If you have not done so yet, revise your literature review based on any instructor feedback you received. (literature review is attached along with instructors feed back) Assignment Instructions  Create a research proposal that provides a detailed plan for your experiment. For this assignment, write your research proposal. Be sure to use the Research Proposal Template [DOCX], as it provides context and wording that you should use to help you clearly explain your main points. By using the template, you will cover all of the points below. Insert your revised literature review in the Literature Review section in the template. Operationally define the variables that you are using in your study. State your hypothesis for your study. Report on the method you will use to sample your participants. Use your notes from the media piece to guide your sampling method selection. Note: You will be using your classmates as participants for this project. Explain the method you will use to collect and analyze your data. Use your notes from the media piece to guide your sampling method selection. Choose the measurement that matches your study. Review the template for suggested language. Discuss how the measurement increases the reliability and validity of the study. Explain your procedure based on research design you chose.

Ensure you define behavior, discuss their tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal characteristics as well as give applications for stimulants upon the physiology and psychological functioning. Use many citations and facts, not your opinion. Do not use I, we, you, or us in your paper. Assignment Students will find one new empirical journal related to the topic of their literature review. Students will do an in-depth analysis of the introduction and methods sections of the journal article. The in-depth analysis should answer the questions below. Your writing should be simple to read and understandable by people who have never taken a psychology class. You must submit your paper to the Blackboard SafeAssign link on the Small Writing Assignments page. Please do not copy the abstract or any sentences from the article. This will count as plagiarism. Journal Article One new empirical research article must be found on a similar topic as your literature review. Instead of a summary, this assignment is to analyze the introduction and methods sections only. Students must write a 1-page paper that answers the following questions Questions The following questions must be answered in your writing assignment. However, do not just list each question and answer. Your paper should be one full, coherent piece of writing. 1. What is the primary research question? 2. What type of research question was it? 3. What are the conceptual variables? 4. What was the research design? 5. Was the research design an appropriate choice to answer to the research question? 6. How were the conceptual variables operationalized? 7. Were the operational variables valid and reliable? How do you know? 8. What are the hypotheses? 9. Were the hypotheses specific and did they include the operational variables? 10. Were the hypotheses an answer to the research question? Specifics APA Formatting Papers must adhere to APA formatting. This includes correct grammar and citations. Your paper must have 1-inch margins, be exactly double-spaced, and use Times New Roman font, size 12. Your submission should have a title page and a reference page. You do not need an abstract page. Your writing must be a minimum and a maximum of 1-page. Any shorter or any longer will count against you. Including the title page and reference page, your submission should be three pages total. Grading Papers will be graded along two criteria: content and writing quality. For content, students will receive points for accurately describing the journal article and answering the questions. For writing quality, students will receive points for clear writing and adhering to APA formatting.

Read Chapter 8: Middle Adulthood (pg. 285-336) The reading describes several transitions and life events that can occur during middle adulthood. While many of those in middle adulthood thrive, that is not always the case, as evidenced by the occurance of midlife crises.  Create a presentation (using PowerPoint, or your favorite slideshow tool) in which you address the following: Identify and describe three challenges typically faced in middle adulthood (make sure to cite sources) – minimum 3 slides Identify and describe three recommendations for how to overcome those challenges (make sure to cite sources) – minimum 3 slides Offer two detailed suggestions for how thrive in middle adulthood  (make sure to cite sources) – minimum 2 slides You must cite your unit reading and/or outside sources to support your statements. I’m not looking for opinions here – you must support your statements and suggestions with cited sources. Include a reference slide at the end, with your references in APA format, and use in-text citations on your slides. Keep in mind that I’m also not looking for you to copy and paste information from the reading/websites and stick it into your slides. You can use a direct quote if you feel you need to, but it must have quotation marks around it to indicate that it is a direct quote. Everything else will need to be in your own words (paraphrase), followed by an in-text citation to indicate where the information came from.Make sure that you give each slide a title so it is clear which slides are focused on challenges and which slides are focused on recommendations and suggestions. What are the test and measurements that will be used? 4. Conclusion What findings do you expect? How will the findings be beneficial to the study of psychology?
