[SOLVED] Slaughterhouses
Concerned by things they have read and heard about slaughterhouses and factory farms, Frank, Hector, and Maria are and are thinking about launching an undercover investigation of a local slaughterhouse by getting jobs there or maybe even in a factory farm. They want to collect firsthand information about what goes on. However, they are having difficulty deciding whether this is morally acceptable. Frank is a Kantian, Hector is a utilitarian, and Maria has adopted the idea of rights based on equal consideration that DeGrazia argues for. · If each of these individuals stays true to their ethical theory, what should each of them conclude and why? Be specific. · What ethical view is best for approaching these issues? Why? (Note that it need not be one of the three mentioned here.) · How might someone reasonably disagree (regarding what view is best) and what is your response? To answer this well, you will need to reflect carefully on a number of things: how the theories operate, the data available for the situations involved, strengths and weaknesses of the given theories, as well as whether other theories might be more appropriate. In applying the theories, be sure to explain the reasoning carefully (think about how they were applied in the recordings and in our discussions). [SOLVED] Substantive Theory
Assignment Instructions: This assignment serves as a building block for your final thesis proposal. For this literature review, you need to select a substantive theory, either something that we discussed in the lesson, or something outside of the course, and focus your literature review around that theory. Your theory selection should make sense with the research question you intend to assess within your final research proposal. Since this is a literature review focused on a particular topic (i.e. the substantive theory) you will need to discuss the current state of the literature specific to that theory (for example, deterrence theory, social identity theory, and etc). You’ll want to start with a discussion on the early conceptualizations of the theory and how it has developed over time. your conclusion should include a discussion on where the research on that theory needs to go next. What are some questions that remain? In what new ways should it be applied? Format: Standard academic format will suffice: 1-inch borders on all four sides, double spaced, with times new roman 12-point font. As with all academic assignments (unless otherwise specified), you must include a references section and list your references. This literature review should include a critical review of at least 9-10 scholarly/peer-reviewed articles. Since multiple writing styles are in use within this course, on your title page, please note which style you are using within your assignment. This will help me cater to my comments to the style you are using. The style you use needs to be the one that is used within your program of study. Total pages: 5 complete pages in length not including title page, or references. I have also attached a synthesis matrix that should help you organize your notes as you go, as well as the grading rubric for this assignment. Use the filename (no spaces): yourlastnameW4.doc to upload this file to the HW4 assignment. As you proofread your assignment I encourage you to work with Belcher, Wendy Laura. 2009. “Editing Your Sentences” In Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks: A Guide to Academic Publishing Success. Sage. This resource has a nice step by step process for enhancing your writing. Note: As mentioned above this assignment is a building-block for your final assignment. In your research proposal in addition to synthesizing the literature on a theory, you will also need to synthesize the literature surrounding your topic you are looking to explore as well. This will serve as a preliminary literature review that helps to demonstrate the importance of the topic and show that it has not yet been addressed within the literature. [SOLVED] Rule Utilitarianism
Instructions This being your second paper and your first truly argumentative one, I have done much of the work for you. In the paper 2 module, you have a few topics with extra sources. You can also choose any of the applied topics from the last few weeks of the class (abortion, animal ethics, sex ethics, immigration, ???) There are 5 conditions that must be fulfilled (see below). However, you are ultimately responsible for choosing the topic and direction of your essay. 1. Roughly 1800 – 2000 words double-spaced (MINIMUM). It is permissible to go over the 1800 words if needed (no excuses about not knowing you could write more to fulfill the tasks) 2. You must present an applied topic. The topic could be from lecture, a default topic, or from an outside lecture. If you choose to use a topic we did not cover in class you must verify the topic and readings with me before you begin. a. Examples: Freedom of speech, terror, euthanasia, etc… b. In presenting this topic, you should consider the notion of moral permissibility, not just preferred behaviors. 3. You must tie your applied topic into a previously covered theory of ethical evaluation. In other words, take a position. You can make it a mixture of positions (eg, Rule Utilitarianism) but that is definitely a more difficult project. Examples: Kants deontology, Mills utilitarianism, Ethics of Care, Virtue Ethics, Social Contract Morality (Hobbes or Rawls and his egalitarianism), or even one of the other theories (but they would need to do additional reading for clarification of the ideas). 4. You must use an objection that both applies generally to the theory and the situation. You must also attempt to meet/answer the objection. 5. You must include one secondary source and provide a full MLA/APA/WHATEVER works cited page. (This means citing the articles we used IN CLASS) *Most Importantly! (but optional) . You SHOULD meet with me to discuss your paper before you start writing it. I want to lead you in a successful direction. If you cannot meet with me during office hours, I can arrange to meet on canvas online conference system. You don’t have to, but it is highly recommended. Note: Remember so many of our discussions about your first papers! Part of the difficulty of writing philosophy is organization. If you can organize your paper correctly, then the hard part is over. [SOLVED] Social Problem
Where does a social problem come from and what can be done about it at the macro, micro, and mezzo levels? Social policy decisions made by all levels of the government, educational, religious, and health care institutions, business firms, and every other social institution create consequences for the communities and economies they serve. Sociologists are tasked with examining individual choices and behaviors and tracing them back to decisions made at the social level. For this project, you are charged with finding how a specific social problem of your choice has been created, exacerbated, and maintained by social institutions. Your project will address the following:Institutional Analysis identify the major social institutions holding the greatest influence over your social problem and the ways they help affect it, both positively and negatively. You must base your analysis on a minimum of 10 research sources, 5 of which must come scholarly journals, not a common sense sociological assessment based on opinion. Be specific! How precisely are these social institutions engaging with the problem in a way that is causing, reinforcing, or augmenting the social problem? Who is benefiting? Who is suffering? Why do the institutions continue to function in the manner they do? Is the issue something that only affects certain people? Is there sufficient public awareness and concern for the issue, and does that concern help address the matter? Nearly all social problems will have multiple social institutions impacting a single social concern, but if you choose to focus on one institution, your analysis should go into great depth with precise details.Systemic Change how might we change the social institutions you identified in order to better address community need? What would the social institutions you identified need to look like for your social problem to be improved upon? What community- and individual-level changes do you identify as assistive in supporting the institutional changes you identified? Did you identify any positive systemic change already occurring and, if so, how might that be expanded? Be sure to spell our multiple levels of the proposed change and if your solution is multi-step, identifying each step clearly how it might affect social change. The paper should include theories, themes, perspectives, or solutions examined in class together throughout your analysis. The final product should be between 3-4 single-spaced pages in length, in 12-point standard font, with one-inch margins, using ASA reference citation style where appropriate.
