Activity: Social Media: What’s Your Algorithm? Social media can be considered anti-social in that it promotes highly differentiated monolithic social groups rather than broader socialities like a city-wide community. Open a social media app or site that you use often (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit etc.). What are the top items in your feed? What ads are you being fed? Take a screenshot from your feed and plop it into a Word doc (it’s ok if the feed is in another language other than English). Then write a paragraph about how someone might interpret your feed and ads through a racial lens. How does race show up in your feed if at all? What does it mean if race doesn’t show up at all when it’s so prevalent in the current news? What are other ways that race/ethnicity are not depicted but connoted in things like food, music, and clothing in your feed? If you are not based in the US, what are the other ways that racial/ethnic difference can be interpreted in your feed?

Find two music videos from 1980s artists to view and discuss. You can use the embedded videos from the modules or find something from outside of the material. Any musical style is acceptable as long as the artist was active in the 1980s. For each video: What are your first impressions of this video? Does it tell a story or is there a message that the video portrays? Read Chapter 8 of Anthropology: What Does It Mean to Be Human?   Overview: Culture is the key concept unifying the sub-disciplines of anthropology. The culture concept helps anthropologists challenge notions of biological determinism. As you will see, you and all other human beings acquire culture—patterns of learned behavior and ideas—as a member of your own society. Material artifacts and structures created and used by humans help shape your acquisition of culture, and your culture builds on the heritage of earlier generations. As you will learn, no other living organism relies on culture as much as human beings do, and culture is our principle means of navigating the world.
