Watch the film, Iron Jawed Angels and write a 500-word opinion piece (that’s about two double-spaced pages). Do not recap the film or the clip (I’ve seen them) but write a thoughtful commentary on how we think about gender, human rights, and social change today. In doing so, you might consider which character you most identify with and why and how we put contemporary voter suppression, mostly along racial, ethnic, gendered, and socio-economic lines together with suffrage. Deviance is defined in sociology as those activities or appearances that are discouraged or condemned due to them not being consistent with the norms or expectations of the larger group. Often, acts that are considered deviant by one group or at one time may be seen as normal by another group or at another time. For a group of bikers in a bar, several exposed tattoos may be considered the norm, while the same exposed tattoos in the courtroom on an attorney may be seen as deviant. When we express deviance (or compliance), we often experience the consequences of sanctions. Sanctions are those positive or negative reactions we receive from others to either encourage to continue an approved behavior or discourage us from continuing with one that is deviant. Discussion: Can you describe a time in your life when you wanted to do something and decided against it because you feared sanctions that someone important to you might apply? Current research supports the assumption that autism is caused by neurological impairments affecting brain chemistry and/or brain structure (Harvard Medical School, 1997). Even though the exact etiology of the disorder is unknown the symptoms are well defined, thus providing essential information for educational treatment. Currently, educational treatment approaches are based on three theories explaining the presence of common symptoms. In your opinion which theory (perceptual/cognitive theory, developmental theory, or behavioral theory) would you use to educate students with autism? Give an example to help explain your viewpoint.
