Instructions for Book Essay- The Hanging of Thomas Jeremiah

The purpose of this assignment is to measure your ability to analyze and explain key themes in the book.  It is NOT designed to determine how well you can find and regurgitate OTHER people’s analyses of the book.  Therefore, please be forewarned that plagiarism can result in a failing grade for the course (see syllabus).  Keep in mind that taking someone else’s analysis and merely changing a word here and there is still plagiarism.  I WILL be checking for plagiarism using the Turnitin system, to which you will have access when you submit your assignment.  Here is a link to a 6-minute video explaining how to use Turnitin to check your essay for non-original content.

You may use direct quotes from Jeremiah; no other sources are to be used.  Be sparing in your use of direct quotes; keep them short and to a minimum.Your similarity report from Turnitin should contain no more than 25% non-original text.  I’m much more interested in your analysis and summation than in reading dozens of direct quotes daisy-chained together.

Format:  Type double-spaced in Chicago Manual of Style/Turabian format, using in-text citations (If you are unfamiliar with this format, click on this link for guidance and examples.)Remember that you’ll need to cite not only direct quotes, but also ideas/facts you get from the book that are not general knowledge. This is a two part essay.  In Part I, describe the circumstances leading to Thomas Jeremiah’s arrest, addressing the following questions.  Why were slave-ownerslike Henry Laurens determined to preserve the institution of slavery?  Why did slave-owners feel that the colonies’ revolution from Britain represented a threat to the institution of slavery?Why, specifically, did Jeremiah pose a threat?  Support your assertions with specific examples from the book. In Part II, discuss the evidence for and against Jeremiah’s guilt.  In your opinion, was he guilty?  Why/why not?

1. Background The essay deals with continuities (you can think of this like similarities and differences) between forms of organizing SMs in the pre-internet age and in the internet age. We’ve dealt with labour as the dominant form of organizing opposition to perceived injustice and inequality (See Horowitz and Ogmundson articles) up to the 1980s. After this, labour weakens and social movements begin to proliferate on their own. However, new social movements

– contentious social movements, as Tilly calls them – begin to emerge roughly speaking at about the same time that the internet and digital/cellular communication becomes popular. Then, with the arrival of social media platforms, movements begin an enormous growth. I’ve argued in my lectures and discussions of readings that labour unions were seen as the dominant form or organizing against oppression and for social justice. This has now changed due to neoliberalism and other economic and demographic changes.

2. The hypothesis Discuss critically: while labour used to be the broad umbrella category for organizing against excesses of capitalism, it may well be now that technology is the umbrella institution that makes organizing against injustice possible.

3. what to do in the essay

? Read and discuss highlights of the articles on labour that we have discussed (See Horowitz in May 25-27; Dadak in June 1-3; and Ogmundson and Doyle in June 8-10) ? Read and discuss highlights of Rodgers, Protest, Activism and Social Movements Chapters 3 and 8, and articles by Stern and Allagia and Wong for the weeks of June 8-10

? One thing you might find interesting now is to look at the Toronto Police Association (https://www.tpa.ca/) to see how the association, as a labour union, is trying to address perceptions of police violence against racialized minorities and people with mental health difficulties

? Evaluate whether there is a continuity (ie are movements now talking about the same thing as movements then did) between the earlier and contemporary modes of organizing social movements.

Multimedia Research Project Instructions

As a culminating project, you will incorporate your knowledge gained in the class into a 13–15-slide PowerPoint presentation, focusing on a specific drug of your choice. The presentation’s purpose is to provide general information about the drug and then to focus on prevention of abuse. Be creative! It is intended that you could use your presentation as an educational tool for a self-selected audience (e.g., write your presentation to a specific age group). You will be graded on your design, color choice and font size/text. Use images and graphics as appropriate to your design and information.

The purpose of the PowerPoint is that the slides could be used as a teaching tool. All materials used must be paraphrased or summarized and not directly quoted.Do not write in full sentences and paragraphs in this presentation. You are encouraged to use bullet points.

Write a resume (your choice of reverse chronological or functional). Refer to Chapter 10 for proper choice and format for resume. Pages 248-250 have an example of a job ad, email cover, and resume. Also see the power point and sample good and bad resumes in this Module.

Remember, most of your experience and degrees will not be completed, so you must research and use what WOULD be needed in your future when and if you ever apply for a job like the one you have chosen for your job (find an actual job listing to use). Again, I realize this is not your actual resume but one that you might have in the future. This is a FORMAL WRITING ASSIGNMENT and counts for 20 percent of your final grade.
