Write a 5 to 6 paragraph synthesis essay, where you will discuss the relationship of Christ and culture, demonstrating your command of the English language, your ability to synthesize numerous texts, and your mastery of appropriate in-text citations. The goal is for you to demonstrate your understanding of several of the works from the reading list and the ability to recognize common themes among them.  The focus of this essay is on Christ as the transformer of culture.  Discuss some of the ideas you glean from the readings to help you know how to write your paper.   The key to writing this paper is to compose a clear thesis statement. Henderson CASE PRESENTATIONS   In the Reading List you will see that you have been assigned to present cases during the course.  Your case presentations will be incorporated into class lectures and will form a key part of the analysis of various course topics.   There is no single “right way” to do a case presentation.  However, as you are preparing your cases I would like you to use the following model:   Facts:      Provide a concise overview of the key facts of the case.   Issue:      Identify the key legal issue(s) in the case.   Held:      Indicate how the case was decided.  Note that the case may have moved from trial to appeal and then possibly to the Supreme Court of Canada (or other top court).  If possible please set out how the case was decided at each level of court.   Reasons:  Set out the key reasons for the decision of the court.  Note that in some cases the reasons are extensive.  Please summarize such as concisely as possible focusing on what you believe are the critical reasons for the decision.   Ratio:     Provide the ratio [the key legal principle(s)] that comes out of the case.   Comments:   Provide your own personal comments or perspective on the case   In addition to your presentation in class, in order to assist your fellow students, please prepare a concise written summary of your case.  (I would emphasize “concise”.  Case summaries will normally be one to two pages in length and should definitely not exceed three pages.)  Case summaries should be posted on Moodle prior to the class presentation.  Instructions for posting your cases are included in a separate document.  A sample case is attached. Ontario Court of Appeal [1946]   FACTS:            1.         Taylor was the driver of a truck owned by the Appellant (Defendant). 2.         Taylor failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into a bus injuring Buckley, the driver (Respondent – Plaintiff). 3.         Taylor had become suddenly insane believing the truck was being operated by remote control. 4.         Taylor told the police this story 20 minutes following the accident and to other witnesses the day of the accident. 5.         Taylor died a month after the accident of syphilis of the brain. 6.         The trial judge found in favour of the plaintiffs.   ISSUE:               Does insanity or mental illness relieve a person from a duty to take care and the resulting liability in negligence?   HELD:               Appeal Allowed…judgment in favour of the Appellant (Defendant).   REASONS:   1.         The key question was the degree of insanity experienced by Taylor.  As a result of his mental illness he was unable to understand and appreciate the duty of care required of him.  No liability could therefore accrue to him. 2.         The Appellant trucking company was not liable for the actions of Taylor as it had no knowledge of Taylor’s mental illness.   RATIO:   The decision of whether a mentally ill person can be found liable in negligence is dependent on whether the mentally ill person was able to understand and appreciate the duty of care expected of that person.   COMMENTS:   1.         Should the law make such a distinction for those who are mentally ill?  Does this fit with the primary objective of tort law which is to compensate?   2.         Many normal people do not fully understand and appreciate a duty of care…should the standard be different for them?

Please read: As you noted in past submissions, fiction can reveal truths in ways that non-fiction may not.  Many of you discussed how one’s imaginative mind may be closer to dealing with real events through description, storytelling, art, and intimacy between the author, poet, or playwright, and the audience. Recall in Toni Morrison’s video “A Foreigner’s Home”, how she addresses issues of non-belonging in the U.S. and elsewhere through slam poetry and performance arts at the Louvre in Paris. In Hansberry’s play, you are bringing one issue that the play confronts in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s to the fore, or the present. Watch about the first 60 minutes, through Act 1 of this film version of the original broadway play.  Although there is a more contemporary version of the film, I believe this cast is untouchable in theatrical acumen and nuanced  performance. Answer 2-3 prompts in-depth, with quotes and citations from the 1961 film version in 150-200 words by the due date.   The playwright is Lorraine Hansberry so when citing include the playwright’s last name, hour, minute and second citation.  For example:  (Hansberry 01:06:23) which translates to 1 hr, 6 min, 23 seconds. In what ways does the opening dialogue between Ruth and Walter establish the major themes of the play?   Describe the shared values and dreams that give the family its cohesiveness. Provide concrete details.   Describe Walter’s view of women. Is his view validated by the actions of the women?   What is the significance of Mama’s plant? How does the symbolism of light and dark play itself out in these early scenes (think in both literal and inferential terms)?    Describe the speech patterns of the main characters. What function do the differences in diction serve? Is there any relationship between a character’s diction and his or her moral standing in the play? Explain.    Even though Big Walter is dead, he is an important figure in the play. Examine ways in which his presence is created, and explain what he represents.   Compare Walter’s passion to begin a new business with Beneatha’s desire for an African identity or becoming a doctor.   Consider the setting. How do the different settings in the film, reflect the characters’ demeanor? What does this suggest about their economic situation, hopes, vision for their future? Be very specific here in describing a setting and a very detailed response of its significance on the characters.

The case analysis should be no more than 3 pages, single or double-spaced. Your case analysis is due on Canvas by 4pm on the day the case is scheduled to be discussed in class. Note that case analyses submitted after this time will not be accepted. Your essay should be an argumentative essay of approximately 1,000-1,200 words. -Citations should be in APA format. The concept of “safety” is not the same for everyone. You need to be clear about what what is “safe” and “unsafe” according to you. Think of them as being “warrants,” that is, as the bridge between your claim and your reason(s). a. Not because something causes harm, it is automatically “unsafe” and should always be avoided. b. Any activity contain a risk. Be clear about the threshold for applying biosolids to agricultural lands (use governmental regulations if necessary). c. Not just because we lack evidence for harm, something is “safe”. Not just because something is “safe”, we should do it. 5. If you argue that applying biosolids to farmlands is not safe because of a specific contaminant, you need to demonstrate a number of independent things: a. That the contaminant causes harm to animals, or people. b. That the contaminant is present in biosolids. c. That there is an established pathway for the contaminant to enter the food chain from biosolids. d. That the accumulation of the contaminant within the food chain is sufficiently high to cause the harmful effects listed in A.
