Impact of Business Unionism

M1A1: Essay – Impact of Business Unionism Due Sunday by 11:55pm Points 100 Submitting an external tool Available after Jan 11 at 12am Before you begin this activity, be sure that you have: Read Chapters 1 and 2. Reviewed the videos: Ford and Taylor in the 1920s – Part 1 (Links to an external site.) [Video, 5:08 minutes] Ford and Taylor in the 1920s – Part 2 (Links to an external site.) [Video, 6:17 minutes] Ford During the Slide into the Great Depression (Links to an external site.) [Video, 8:27 minutes] Unionization at Ford During the 1930s and 1940s (Links to an external site.) [Video, 7:12 minutes] This assignment requires you to reflect on the concept of business unionism adopted by the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the impact that this philosophy has had on U.S. labor relations. By the end of this activity you should better understand the benefits and limitations of the business unionism approach of the U.S. labor movement. The American Federation of Labor succeeded in part because it adopted a “business unionism” approach that accepted the economic system based on capitalism and sought to secure gains for its members through negotiation with management. As part of the business unionism philosophy, the union bargained for better “bread and butter issues” – pay, benefits and working conditions. In a 2-3 page essay, discuss the benefits and limitations of this approach for the U.S. labor movement today. In your essay, be sure to consider the differences in the economic environment of the late 1800s and the economic environment today. Also, you must support your analysis with information from the readings and other sources, as appropriate. Evaluating Risk in Critical Infrastructure

You are the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Officer in the Plans Directorate of your County Emergency Management Agency. Your county commissioners have decided, based on continuing economic factors and other municipality-level constraints, that the county may be better suited to orchestrate and implement the National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) better than the municipalities. The paucity of available and full-time assets in the municipalities will simply not support successful implementation of this national-level plan. Based on your education and training, the county Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC) has selected you to oversee, orchestrate, and synchronize the efforts of all associated stakeholders in meeting the six objectives in the NIPP. The county EMC would like this product in the form of a strategy (e.g., short and broad but addressing the key tenets) and the objectives stated in the NIPP. He does not seek the intricate details that are normally associated with a program or plan; rather, he wants an overarching document that provides the affected stakeholders (e.g., owners or operators of Critical Infrastructure (CI), associated first responders, elected officials, and other public safety officials) with a strategy for protecting the county’s CI. He specifically wants the strategy to include a vision, goal, what needs to be accomplished, how you intend to accomplish each objective, and the resources that you intend to use to enable this strategy. Using what you have learned thus far from the statutory, directive, plan references, and any dialogue with your colleagues, develop a County Strategy for Critical Infrastructure Protection that includes the specified tasks directed by your County EMC. Your only constraint is that this is not intended to be the intricate detailed plan for executing each implied task associated with critical infrastructure protection. It is meant to provide a reader with a general sense of background, purpose, tasks to be performed, and a conceptual framework of how you intend to execute the county responsibilities for successful completion of all specified and implied tasks. Assignment Details Address the following in a strategy document of 2-3 pages: In your county CIP strategy, include the following components: Vision Goal What needs to be accomplished How you intend to accomplish each objective The resources that you intend to use to enable this strategy How will you synchronize the efforts of all associated stakeholders in meeting the six objectives in the NIPP? Explain in detail. Remember to be specific and detailed in your county CIP strategy. This is a formal report that you are submitting for approval, so be sure to utilize the correct format. Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

Elements of Fiction

Identify and explore several elements of fiction (such as plot, characters, foreshadowing, setting, point of view, symbolism, motivation, or theme) in one of the assigned short stories above. Your essay will be two pages long and must include a Works Cited page (three pages total). Focus your paper on three literary devices, making sure to document evidence of these devices from your short story. You must use proper MLA citation (parenthetical citations and a works cited page) when documenting evidence of these elements from your short story. For this assignment, you will only need one primary source: the short story you are analyzing. DO NOT USE ANY SECONDARY (OUTSIDE) SOURCES for this essay. Be sure to identify the author and the title of the short story in your introduction. Since you are using only one source, the in-text, parenthetical citation should only contain the page number(s) of the story. Again, the only source you need for this assignment is your short story from the Norton Introduction to Literature, Shorter 13th edition. Need help with that entry? Refer to pg. 1981 in your book; at the bottom of the page, you will see an example for a short story in an Anthology. Change the author and title and pages to reflect your story.    Remember to submit your paper in correct MLA format (Times New Roman, 12-point Font, Double-Spaced, etc.). Use the examples below to help with parenthetical citations. This essay is just like essay one, only it covers different short stories.  Do not use conversational words (“a lot,” “like,” “got,” “stuff,” “fun,” or “things”). Second person (you, your) in an essay is off limits. Also, avoid first person (I, we, me, our). Use third person only.  Do not use the words “in conclusion” at the beginning of your conclusion paragraph. No announcements: “In my opinion,” “I am going to discuss” or “This paper is about.” Titles should be punctuated correctly. Longer works (plays, books, movies, newspapers and magazines) should be italicized. Shorter works (short stories, newspaper articles, and poems) should be placed in quotation marks. All quoted material must be documented using MLA format. That means all quotes must be introduced, have quotation marks around them, and, if necessary, have the correct citation at the end of the quote. Periods go after the citation. Here are two examples: Chekhov claims, “In one of the corners a young man gets up” (86). Rose is a character who “lacks emotion” when talking to men (Williams 287). The following heading must be used on all essays on the first page. On the left hand side of the paper, using one-inch margins, double space the following: Your Name Date (Day Month Year) Use Times New Roman 12-point font, double space, and apply one-inch margins to all sides. Also, every paper should have an appropriate title after the heading.  Do not use unclear pronoun references. (“We bought it at the store.” What is “it”?) Use the past tense when discussing historical events, and use the literary present when discussing fictional events. Examples:    Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, was published in 1959. (Past tense) Hansberry writes about the hardships and goals of a family living in the Southside of Chicago. (Present tense)

Version Control

For this essay, the skillset that you are learning is to control two sources equally, blending them into one cohesive argument and analysis. To do this, you will be discussing how the one text Chinua Achebe’s “Dead Men’s Path.” resounds with the ideas in Freire’s “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education.” In other words, this is somewhat similar to a “compare and contrast”, but more in-depth: instead of just a simple compare and contrast such as “this author says this, but the other author says that,” you will be going deeper into how/why these ideas differ, where they converge, how they might influence one another, and whether the ideas build on each other. A good way to think of it is to put the two authors in conversation with each other about the theories and practice of education. While these authors are talking about similar issues within education, they aren’t making identical arguments–instead, they are focusing on specific ideas that are of particular interest to them. Your task is to discuss how these authors’ ideas compare to one another in terms of what they say about education. Basing your ideas on their texts, some questions you might ask yourself in order to put them into the conversation are: Is your chosen text’sauthor building on the thoughts of Freire? Do they take different perspectives on the shared topic, and how? How do their ideas reflect one another? Where do they depart from one another? What does each author say about each of your chosen claims? Do they disagree, and why? Where is there common ground? How would they suggest moving forward? Don’t feel like you need to answer every single one of these questions–they are just some things to think about as a jumping-off point to start brainstorming about how these ideas relate to one another. Your thesis statement (argument and claims) should incorporate both texts into a discussion about the education system, educational philosophy/pedagogy, classroom dynamics.

Elements of Ethical Decision Making

The mission of the profession as a whole is “to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” (NASW Code of Ethics). The second section of the Code gives an overview of the purpose and functions and presents a guide for addressing ethical issues. This purpose is defined as determination of values, principles, and standards that can provide guidance to social workers in practice. The Code is meant to be used by “individuals, agencies, organization, and bodies (such as licensing and regulatory boards, profession liability insurance providers, courts of law, agency boards of directors, government agencies, and other professional groups) that choose to adopt it as a frame of reference” (NASW Code of Ethics). The third section, titled “Ethical Principles,” presents the six board principles that can be drawn from the six core values of the profession. These are:Social workers’ primary goal is to help people in need and to address social problems. This principle is drawn from the value of service.Social workers challenge social injustice. This is drawn from the value of social justice.Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person. The related core value is dignity and worth of person.Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships. this drawn from the core value of the importance of human relationships.Social workers behave in a trustworthy manner. This principle is drawn form the value of integrity.Social workers practice within their areas of competence and develop and enhance their professional expertise. This is drawn form the value of competence. (NASW Code of Ethics). The fourth section of the Code provides specific standards, or action guides, in six areas of professional functioning. These are also used as a basis for adjudication, both public and self-regulatory, by defining accepted standards of behavior.  The six sections are listed as social workers’:Ethical Responsibilities to ClientsEthical Responsibilities to ColleaguesEthical Responsibilities to Practice SettingsEthical Responsibilities to ProfessionalsEthical Responsibilities to the Social Work ProfessionEthical Responsibilities to the Broader SocietyCase Study:Based on the Code of Ethics and Ethical Decision Making Review this case and apply the Code of Ethics in Resolving the ethical dilemma. Summarize and propose what would be the right decisions for the social worker and/or intern in this case. Remember, your answer is based on your review of the Code of Ethics, your own interpretations and postulations, so everyone should have a different way of looking at it and no answer is concrete, right or wrong.  Minimum 400 word response. The DilemmaWhat follows is an ethical dilemma faced by a student intern who unintentionally acquires information about her client during the course of the field seminar. Read the following case and give some thought to the dimensions of the ethical dilemma and how you, as the social worker, would decide what action to take.Julia is a social work intern placed at a local Family Services Agency. Over the course of the last six months, she has worked with Carla Rodriguez to reunify her with her three children, ages 11, 4, and 3. Carla (age 28) is the mother of Tatiana (age 11), Derrick (age 4), and Angel (age 3). The children were removed to foster care when charges of neglect were substantiated. Derrick and Angel were placed in separate foster homes, and Tatiana stayed with Carla’ sister. Carla’ drug addiction limited her ability to care for her children, who were found to be living in squalid conditions. While the children were in foster care, Carla made a concerted effort to have the children returned to her care. She entered and completed a drug treatment program, and claims now to be “completely drug free.” Carla entered similar programs twice before; this is the first time she completed a program. The children were reunified with their mother two months ago. Carla has been drug free for a number of months and is meeting the minimum standards of care for her children. In the field internship seminar, social work interns were exchanging information about their cases. An intern placed in a local junior high school asked her peers for advice about the group she is running. Taking precautions to change the names and identifying details of the group members, the intern spoke about “Mary’” fears about her family being broken up again “after they just got back together.” Her mother isn’t “doin’ the bad drugs anymore, but she smokes pot with her boyfriend in the apartment.” “Mary” tells the group that her mother told her “not to say nothing to nobody” if she doesn’t want to split up the family. “Mary” doesn’t want her mother’ social worker to find out about the drug use.Julia, the intern working at the Family Services site, realizes that the client being described is the daughter of her client, Carla. Carla has adamantly denied any drug use and always appears “straight” at the time of the agency visits. Julia has no firsthand evidence to suggest that Carla is using drugs. Julia wonders what to do with this information.
