The specific components of depression are slow thinking, psychomotor sluggishness and many somatic auxiliary symptoms such as loss of vital emotions, feeling empty and anxious, gray conceptual contents, insomnia, and loss of interest in daily activities (Chand & Arif, 2019). Chamberlain NR224 Depression – Students’ Awareness Assignment Depression is today considered by many to be a disease of civilization, because of intense psycho-emotional experiences and exaggerated demands. This form is known as depression of exhaustion. Because of the high prevalence of this condition in the latest years, the brochure which I chose from the Speak Up website to review was the one in regard to depression. Summary of Brochure The brochure focuses on offering major information about depression and the way patients could seek for help. It starts by enumerating the major signs, such as loss of appetite, fatigability, insomnia, desire to be alone, irritability and difficulty of making a decision. The next part consists of enumerating risks groups such as those who have a familial history of depression, those who follow a specific type of treatment, and those who have a serious health condition or people who went through a traumatic event. It continues by encouraging the patient who suffers from these symptoms to seek help as soon as possible because if depression is left untreated it can lead to serious consequences. One of the major elements discussed in the brochure is the importance of therapy. It even gives the reader a guide of questions, which they could ask their physician before this form of treatment. The brochure ends by giving advice in regard to things Depression Brochure 3 which can diminish the effect of depression such as following the treatment, trying to stick to the daily routine, join support groups and practice relaxation exercises. (Speak Up, 2018) Evaluation of Brochure The brochure includes most of the essential information regarding this pathology. Even so, many of the information tends to be very general and can be characteristics to simply having a bad day. A better delimitation from an acute phase should be done. One of the things I would focus more on would be the statistics. The brochure doesn’t focus too much on making the reader feel like they are not the only one facing this pathology. Based on the World Health Organization website, depression is one of the most common mental disorders, which affects approximately 300 million peopleChamberlain NR224 Depression – Students’ Awareness Assignment . That means that approximately 5% of the people around the world suffer from those pathology. If we compare it to all the psychiatric cases, it represents around 60% of the diagnosis given by the psychiatrist to their patients. The brochure fails focusing on the major complication of depression which is suicide. Based on the information provided in the text, this very serious matter is treated superficially. It is believed that approximately 800.000 people die each year because of suicide which makes it the second leading cause of death in 15-29 years’ age groups (WHO, 2018). They should also specify that this condition is characterized by MOTN- middle of the night insomnia. This means that patients manage to fall asleep but tend to wake up at 3-4 am and find it hard to fall asleep from that moment (Protheroe, Estacio & Saidy, 2015). Even so, one of the great things about this brochure is that it uses simple language without trying to impress with medical terms. This is an important element because everyone who reads it can understand. During my year as a student, I read many brochures which I found hard or close to impossible to be ready by someone who does not have a background in medicine. From Depression Brochure 4 my point of view, it is essential to focus on the language whi is used as we are referring to general public. Conclusion Without any doubts, depression represents the point of interest for all the mental help programs. This is due to a high risk of suicide and other major consequences if not treated at the right time. Because of the fact that it is frequently not recognized or it is underestimated, many organizations focus on providing information on how to correctly suspect the diagnosis and what measures should be taken for both the benefit of the patients and also of the people surrounding them. Depression is no longer an untreatable disease which puts a lifetime mark on the patient. Chamberlain NR224 Depression – Students’ Awareness Assignment There are a variety of psychotherapy techniques which improves the quality of life of the patient until they reach a point during which they can start enjoying life again. In the end, it is important to continue sending a message through all means such as it was the case of the brochure discussed in this review.
