Prompt(s), Describe 2 of the 4 correctional rehabilitations: Individual Counseling, Group Counseling, Educational Programs, and Vocational Programs. Discuss what they are, why they are important, and why you think they should be provided to inmates. Student posts, Kaitlyn One correctional rehabilitation is individual and group counseling. Most people in prison suffer from some kind of harsh background, have substance abuse issues, mental issues, etc. I think counseling being provided would be a great idea for the willing individuals. Counseling is important for prisons because it can teach a person how to control their emotions, which is exactly what most people in prison need to be able to control, such as anger. These sessions can be group therapy, they can have sessions about communication, general life issues, and social relationships (Siegel & Worrall, 2018, p 542). I think this would be very beneficial for life outside of prison. I also think that drug treatment programs would be very beneficial for prisons and I believe that many individuals would be very thankful for this programs. “… data suggest that about 30 percent of all inmates are provided with some form of services… The community itself, including staff and program participants, become the primary method of change. All work together as members of a ‘family’ in order to create a culture in which members confront each others negative behavior…” (Siegel & Worrall, 2018, p 544). The book also tells us how difficult it is for someone to get off drugs, and that finding the “… proper mix of programing…” can be also be difficult (Siegel & Worrall, 2018, p 545). I think these two programs stand out to me the most because I find them to be the most effective. I think these two programs give people hope of getting out of prison and becoming a better person and creating a better life for themselves. Ashley Correctional rehabilitation programs within prison facilities is a great resource for these inmates if they are ready to welcome change and help to move into the right direction. There are always going to be people who do not want to participate or who may require a treatment program far above what the prison facilities can offer. One correctional rehabilitation program that I see a lot of use for is the drug treatment program. There is an opioid crisis among us that is continuing to rise. This program is designed to help those who suffer from substance abuse as well as alcohol abuse receive treatment, training, and therapy while within the walls of prison. Due to drug abuse being so common in correctional facilities, many of them have begun treatment-dispensing called therapeutic communities. This program uses staff other program participants. The goal is to have a family culture to help change behaviors and establish an open, trusting, and safe environment (Siegal and Worrall, 2018, pg. 545). Programs such as this are crucial in order to help lighten the chronic drug problem. Another program that I personally believe helps is the Faith-Based program. While this type of program focuses primarily on training, building support networks, and creating supportive relationships between staff, volunteers, and clients (Siegal and Worrall, 2018, pg. 544), I strongly believe this program helps to create a strong foundation for the inmates once they leave the facility. Having a strong foundation to rely heavily on once released makes all the difference in the world, especially when they are likely to go back to the same environment they came from. Like all treatment, some programs are suited better than others depending on the person and if they are ready to put in the work themselves.
