Creative writing meets case study

A short story about a young woman (mid 20s) with a chronic, progressive physical disability (e.g., MS or muscular dystrophy) who is in a wheelchair and has a boyfriend that her very catholic mother does not approve of. the mom worries her daughter will be taken advantage of. the young woman is referred to a physical therapist for help with going back to school and learning to manage her disability in a community college environment. the helicopter mom wants the therapist to help make her daughter more independent but is afraid at the same time. the therapist is legally and ethically required to provide holistic care and help the young woman not only with her new routine and physical challenges — but her social/family situation as well. the therapist helps the young woman learn to advocate for herself and see herself as an independent and sexual being. the boyfriend is invited to a family meeting with the young woman, mother, and therapist. the story is told from therapist’s perspective but very much focused on the young woman’s journey with lots of quotes from the young woman and mom.
